Features of E-C Public Speech Interpreting: A Case Study of the Interpretation of Obama's Speeches

This paper is trying to analyze the E-C interpreting scripts of Inaugural Address, Remarks on Winning the Nobel Prize and Shanghai Speech by the 44th president of United States Barack Obama with a comparative method based on data collected. The analysis will be employed on the lexical, syntactic as well as rhetorical level and the features of E-C public speech interpreting will be achieved accordingly. The features may serve as reference for the interpreters in their interpretation practice in order to improve the interpretation effects.

A Study of Verbal Humor in Public Speech from the Perspective of Relevance Theory and Cooperative Principle--Taking TED Talks as An Example

Verbal humor carries rich cultural connotation and reflects the wisdom,communicative skills of the humor maker.There are many researches on verbal humor both at home and abroad,especially in the fields of sitcoms and literature from the perspective of pragmatics and cognitive linguistics.However,the researches on the humorous corpus of public speech are limited.This paper intendsto use qualitative research methods to explore the mechanism of verbal humor generation under the theoretical framework of cooperative principle and relevance theory.Through the analysis in the paper,it points out that verbal humor can be produced by violating the cooperative principle,the gap between maximum relevance and optimal relevance,and the speaker’s expanding contextual reasoning.The cooperation principle and relevance theory have a good elaboration on humor in public speeches,but both have their own deficiencies in explanatory power.Only the combination of those two theories can better explain the generation mechanism of verbal humor.

Phonological Metaphors in Stylistics Analysis

Stylistics is the study of style. It is a branch of linguistics concerned with the study of characteristic choices in use of language, made by different individuals or social groups in different situations of use. According to Martin （1991）, grammatical metaphor is the process by which the meanings are multiply-coded at the level of grammar. Meaning variation represented by lexicogrammatical changes are metaphor, and meaning differences represented by sound system may also bring about metaphorical phenomenon. This paper seeks to explore the stylistic value of intonation metaphor in functional stylistics by analyzing the distribution of intonation metaphors in both public speeches and news reports.

Rhetorical Analysis of English Speech from the Perspective of Pathos--Case Study on Michelle Obama's Final Speech at the White House in 2017

Aristotle’s famous theory on rhetoric(Logos,Pathos,Ethos,)is a cornerstone in public speech.The paper would focus on Ethos and its implement in rhetoric devices in public speech.It would make an analysis on Michelle Obama’s farewell speech at the White House on its rhetorical applications in lexis,syntax,phonetics and gestures.From the paper,the readers can obtain some experiences for appreciating public speeches and the teachers can find more effective ways in composition teaching of public speech.

Stylistic Analysis of Hillary＇s Inspiring Speech in Yale University

Stylistics is an interdisciplinary study which applies modem linguistic theories and approaches to research style of language use. Taking stylistics as a base, this paper gives a detailed analysis of stylistic devices used in Hillary＇s Inspiring Speech in Yale University from the perspective of linguistic description, textual analysis and situational factors, and then explores the general stylistic features of public speech, thus providing some enlightenment for public speakers in the future.
