We design a channel-drop filter(CDF)with a linear gradient microcavity in a two-dimensional(2D)photonic crystal(PC).The model of three-port CDF with reflector is used to achieve high quality factor(Q-factor)and 100%channel-drop efficiency.The research indicates that adjusting the distance between reference plane and reflector can simultaneously influence the Q-factor due to coupling to a bus waveguide and the phase retardation occurring in the round trip between a microcavity and a reflector.The calculation results of 2D finite-difference time-domain(FDTD)method show that the designed filter can achieve the drop efficiency of 96.7%and ultra-high Q-factor with an ultra-small modal volume. 展开更多

Two novel dynamical quality of transmission (QoT) optimization schemes with explicit optimization targets and accurate end-to-end QoT estimation are proposed for reconfigurable transparent wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) networks. Numerical simulations show that the scheme of quality (Q) best has the best Q factor improvement with large attenuation adjustment. The scheme of Q allowable can achieve minimized number of tuning sites and attenuation adjustment and also improve the Q factor of light path to the required value. In addition, the idea of dynamic QoT optimization and global impairment control has been experimentally demonstrated on a simple mesh network by the cooperation of a control plane and tunable devices. 展开更多

These characteristics can be described in term of the Q factor and the optical field ... As an optically pumped device, the lasing characteristics of a spherical microcavity laser depend on the optical pumping processes. These characteristics can be described in term of the Q factor and the optical field distribution in a microsphere. We derived analytical expressions and carried out numerical calculation for Q factor and optical field. The Q factor is found to be oscillatory functions of the radius of a microsphere and the pumping wavelength, and the pumping efficiency for a resonating microsphere is much higher than that for an anti-resonating microsphere. Using tunable lasers as pumping sources is suggested in order to achieve a higher pumping efficiency. Numerical calculation on optical field distribution in spherical microcavities shows that a well focused Gaussian beam is a suitable incident wave for cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments in which strong confinement of optical field in the center of a microsphere is requested, but higher order spherical wave should be used instead for exciting whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microsphere lasers, for the purpose of favoring optical energy transferring to WGM in optical microspheres. 展开更多

We propose a return-to-zero on-off keying (RZ-OOK) to non-return-to-zero (NRZ) OOK conversion scheme based on a single custom-designed fiber Bragg grating (FBG). The custom-made FBG is designed and synthesized using discrete layer-peeling algorithm. It is shown that such a FBG can replace the combination of interferometer and the cascaded filter that are invariably employed together in the reported schemes for RZ-OOK to NRZ-OOK format conversion. Simulation results show that the input 20-Gb/s RZ-OOK signals with different duty cycles can be converted into NRZ-OOK signals with high Q-factor. 展开更多

We experimentally demonstrate an efficient enhancement of luminescence from two-dimensional(2D) hexagonal photonic crystal(PC) airbridge double-heterostructure microcavity with Er-doped silicon(Si) as light emitters on siliconon-insulator(SOI) wafer at room temperature.A single sharp resonant peak at 1 529.6 nm dominates the photoluminescence(PL) spectrum with the pumping power of 12.5 m W.The obvious red shift and the degraded quality factor(Q-factor) of resonant peak appear with the pumping power increasing,and the maximum measured Q-factor of 4 905 is achieved at the pumping power of 1.5 m W.The resonant peak is observed to shift depending on the structural parameters of PC,which indicates a possible method to control the wavelength of enhanced luminescence for Si-based light emitters based on PC microcavity. 展开更多
