Methodology: 84 isolates from several regions of Brazil (40 samples from clinical origin and 44 isolates from environmental origin) were maintained at the microorganism’s bank of the Biomedical Science Institute (ICB-USP) of the São Paulo University, in São Paulo, Brazil. This isolates was submitted fungal strains determination, DNA extraction and purification, determination of genotype by URA5 gene RFLP of CGB-positive isolates, protease and phospholipase activity and susceptibility to antifungals. Results: Of six CGB positive isolates tested by RFLP-PCR, only four presented a genomic profile consistent C. gattii species (VGII), while two other were C. neoformans (VNI and VNIII), indicating the existence of canavanine-resistante C. neoformans isolates in the culture collections. The clinical isolates secreted higher levels of phospholipase and environmental isolates but no differences were observed for the protease levels. Almost all isolates were sensible to azoles and amphotericin B. Conclusion: We point out in this research the existence of C. neoformans strains resistant to canavanine and intrinsic characteristic of C. gatti. These results demonstrate the importance to perform a detailed characterization of isolates kept in culture collections.展开更多

For isolation and screening programs, 460 soils are stored at +5 ℃. They were collected in 58 countries, including extreme environments. There are 860 Trichoderma strains in TUB collection, representing 45 count ries and 173 soils and/or tree barks as isolation sources. Trichoderma spp . selected from soils in the tundra region (Rocky Mountains, Colorado) grow at l ow temperatures such as 5-10 ℃. These strains practically do not grow at 30 ℃ . On the contrary, many Trichoderma strains were isolated from tropical or s ubtropical soils and decaying plant materials at 35-40 ℃ in Brazil, Peru, Cost a Rica, Guatemala, Hawaii, Tanzania, Thailand and Indonesia. Trichoderma str ains tolerating limited oxygen supply were selected from river muds and sediment s. Trichoderma spp. tolerating or partially degrading 2,4-dichlorophenol a nd 2,4,6-trichlorophenol in 20 mg/kg concentration were selected from polluted soils. As a part of an attempt to assess the global biodiversity of Trichoderma, researchers of Technical University of Vienna and Agriculture Canada, in collab oration with TUB collection, identified and characterized seven new assumed taxa of Trichoderma from Eurasia.展开更多

The study of the Israeli response to the abduction and murder of three teenagers in summer 2014 is consistent with these theories, and shows how a collective with trauma in its past behaves similarly to a posttraumatic person. The paper contends that due to its traumatic past, the Jewish Israeli public perceived a tragic but limited (from a national security standpoint) hostile action as a grave collective threat, which invoked past demons and brought back existential fears. These feelings were inflamed by the Israeli media and leaders, paving the way for an escalation of the event into an armed battle.展开更多

To date, a total of 2144 strains of bacteria (1357), yeasts (250), filamentous fungi (377), algae (14), and strains still to be identified (146) are maintained at the PNCM. These are preserved and maintained using various methods which include modified liquid drying (lyophilization), ultra-low temperature (-70℃) storage in 10% glycerol, storage in sterile soil, distilled water and overlaying with mineral oil. Periodic viability testing is done to assess the stability of these preserved cultures under storage. Aside from preservation and maintenance of cultures, the PNCM is also involved in several research activities. One of these is the isolation, characterization and identification of some Vibrio isolates from the Philippines. Details on this particular study is presented in this report.展开更多

My present paper is not intended to discuss the topic of identity on the platform of politics, or the postcolonial studies such as transculturation or cultural hybridty. But instead, I am far more interested in locating such issue on the aesthetic dimension of collective memory, which is revealed in two local contemporary Hong Kong compositions. In the process of shaping and reshaping a form of"HongKongeseness" in which the composers tend to create and the local listeners tend to experience, albeit transient, can appear in every nuance of the sonic metaphor embedded in the pre-existing indigenous tunes of a self-contained compositional work.展开更多
