Due to industrial activities,heavy metal concentrations in aquatic systems of Mexico,are on the rise.Zooplankton,particularly rotifers,being sensitive and common components of freshwater,are widely used in ecotoxicolo...Due to industrial activities,heavy metal concentrations in aquatic systems of Mexico,are on the rise.Zooplankton,particularly rotifers,being sensitive and common components of freshwater,are widely used in ecotoxicological tests for establishing water quality criteria.Depending on the route of exposure(i.e.via medium or algal food),the toxicity of heavy metals varies.In the present study we evaluated the effect of cadmium and mercury exposed through medium and via algal food for the rotifer B.rubens.For both the heavy metals,we exposed rotifers via medium containing Chlorella at 0.5×10^(6)cells/ml or fed daily on previously exposed(1,2 and 4 h)alga to the toxicants(using 5 times the value of LC_(50)for B.rubens).For cadmium toxicity through medium,we used 3 toxicant levels(0.1,0.2 and 0.4 mg/L)and for mercury,we used 0.005,0.010 and 0.015 mg/L.Based on the LC_(50),B.rubens was 24 times more sensitive to mercury(0.035±0.002 mg/L)than cadmium.At a concentration of 0.4 mg/L,cadmium through the medium caused increased lag phase of B.rubens.When grown on Chlorella exposed for different durations to cadmium,the rotifer density decreased with the increasing duration of algal exposure to the heavy metal.When mercury was used in the medium or via algal food,the trends in the population growth of B.rubens were similar to those for cadmium.An increase in heavy metal concentration in the medium resulted in a decrease of the rate of population increase per day(r).The r varied from 0.33(in control)to 0.02 d^(-1)(in heavy metal treatment)depending on the mode of exposure though medium or via algal food.展开更多

The root essential oils were obtained by water distillation and analyzed by Gas chromatography (GC) and Gas chromatography coupled with Mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The most abundant components of Z. rubens were (Z)-citral (30.1%), camphene (9.7%), β-phellandrene (7.5%) and 1,8-cineole (7.0%) and zingiberene (5.3%). The main oil constituents of Z. zerumbet were (Z)-citral (26.1%), camphene (16.3%), sabinene (14.6%), zingiberene (7.2%) and lavandulyl acetate (6.7%). The objective of the present study was to assess the level of genetic variation in populations of P. mariana × P. rubens hybrids derived from artificial crosses. Progenies from backcross populations created through a series of controlled pollinations among P. mariana and P. rubens trees across the hybridization index were analyzed. Several Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) and Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) primers were used to amplify genomic DNA samples from each population. ISSR primers produced from 30% to 52% polymorphic loci. The level of polymorphism was higher with RAPD markers, ranging from 57% to 76%. Overall, the two marker systems generated similar levels of polymorphic loci for P. mariana and P. rubens populations. No significant differences were found among the P. mariana × P. rubens populations analyzed and between the hybrids and the parental populations regardless of the molecular marker used. This confirms the genetic closeness of P. mariana and P. rubens species.展开更多
Objective:To explore the in vivo anticancer,anti-angiogenesis and immunomodulatory efficacies of the bioactive polysaccharide isolated from cold aqueous extract of Jania rubens(JCEM) and Pterocladia capillacea(PCEM) a...Objective:To explore the in vivo anticancer,anti-angiogenesis and immunomodulatory efficacies of the bioactive polysaccharide isolated from cold aqueous extract of Jania rubens(JCEM) and Pterocladia capillacea(PCEM) as well as hot aqueous extract of Enteromorpha intestinalis(EHEM) against hepatocellular carcinoma rat model(HCC) and to study their chemical composition.Methods:The sugars and amino acids composition of the bioactive polysaccharides of JCEM,PCEM and EHEM were determined using gas liquid chromatography and amino acid analyzer,respectively.These polysaccharide extracts(20 mg/kg b.wt.for 5 weeks) were assessed on hepatocarcinogenesis in rats and α-fetoprotein(AFP),carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA),glypican-3(GPC-3),hepatocyte growth factor(HGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) and Ig G levels were evaluated.Results:The GLC analysis of JCEM,PCEM and EHEM polysaccharide revealed the presence of 10,9 and10 sugars,in addition the amino acid analyser enable identification of 16,15 and 15 amino acids,respectively.These polysaccharide extracts of JCEM,PCEM and EHEM produced significant decrease in serum AFP,CEA,GPC-3,HGF and VEGF compared with untreated HCC group.JCEM,PCEM and EHEM had an immunostimulatory responses by increasing the IgG levels as compared by naive value(1.23,1.53 and 1.17 folds),respectively.The bioactive polysaccharides in HCC induced rats improved the humoral immune response.The photomicrographs of liver tissue sections of the groups of HCC treated with polysaccharide extracts of Jania rubens and Enteromorpha intestinalis showed intact histological structure.Moreover,fractions HE1,HE4,HE7 obtained from polysaccharide of EHEM showed moderate cytotoxic activity against Hep G2 in vitro with IC_(50) 73.1,42.6,76.2 μg/mL.However,fractions of PCEM and JCEM show no or weak cytotoxicity against Hep G2 in vitro where the cytotoxic activity of their crude polysaccharide extract proved synergetic effect.Conclusions:The pronounced antitumor activity of sulphated polysaccharide-protein complexes of JCEM and EHEM is due to direct cytotoxic activity,anti-hepatocarcinogensis,and anti-angiogenesis.In addition,JCEM,PCEM and EHEM had an immunostimulatory response and improved the humoral immune response in HCC induced rats.展开更多

By creating areas of ameliorated microclimates and fertile soil below their canopies, perennial plants ...Exotic plant invasion is a growing concern in the conservation and management of indigenous arid land ecosystems. By creating areas of ameliorated microclimates and fertile soil below their canopies, perennial plants might influence exotic annual plant invasions. We conducted a quantitative literature review of studies that compared exotic annual plant abundance among native perennial plant species and interspace (open areas) microsites in North America's Mojave Desert, where exotic plant invasion has corresponded with increasing extent of wildfire and broad-scale ecosystem transformation. Ten studies compared exotic annual plant abundance between inter- spaces and below a total of 36 native perennial species. These studies revealed that: (1) With few exceptions, most native perennial species supported a greater abundance of exotic annuals than interspaces, indicating overall facilitation of exotic species by native perennials. (2) Exotic species abundance varied by orders of magnitude among native perennial species, with some perennial species harboring amounts of exotics similar to interspaces. (3) Distributions of dominant exotic species varied, where Bromus rubens displayed a greater affinity for below-perennial microsites than did Schismus spp. and Erodium cicutarium that often were most abundant in interspaces. Results suggest that the degree of facilitation of exotic plants warrants consideration when selecting native perennial species for revegetation and restoration projects.展开更多
