It was found that the degree of grafting (DG) of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) can be controlled by the monomer concentration, absorbed dose, and dose rate under an optimal inhibitor concentration of [Fe2+]=18 mmol/L. SEM observation showed that the macroporous structure in ePTFE films would be covered gradually with the increase of the DG of PAA. The prepared ePTFE-g-PAA film was im- mersed in a neutral silver nitrate solution to fabricate an ePTFE-g-PAA/Ag hybrid film after the addition of NaBH4 as a reduction agent of Ag+ to Ag atom. SEM, XRD, and XPS results proved that Ag nanoparticles with a size of several tens of nanometers to 100 nanometers were in situ immobilized on ePTFE film. The loading capacity of Ag nanoparticles could be tuned by the DG of PAA, and determined by thermal gravimetric analysis. The quart- titative antibacterial activity of the obtained ePTFE-g-PAA/Ag hybrid films was measured using counting plate method. It can kill all the Escherichia coli in the suspension in 1 h. Moreover, this excellent antibacterial activity can last at least for 4 h. This work provides a facile and practical way to make ePTFE meet the demanding antimicrobial requirement in more and more practical application areas.展开更多

In the present work, radiation induced grafting of viscose rayon fabrics, consisting mainly of cellulose fibers, with acrylic acid monomer has been carried out. The grafting yields have been thoroughly studied as a function of different applied experimental parameters. The impact of the graft yield on the physical properties of the fabrics such as tensile strength, elongation, swelling, moisture absorption, crease recovery angle and also the dyeing properties of the fabrics has been studied. The effect of increasing the contact time of the fabric and monomer solution, at room temperature, after stopping irradiation has been studied in detail as well as the effect of temperature on the irradiated samples also after stopping irradiation. The best grafting yield was obtained on irradiating viscose rayon fabric in methanol-water solvent containing acrylic acid monomer, at a dose 20 kGys, then heating for 7 hours at 80℃ and finally keeping the samples at room temperature for about 20 hours. That treatment significantly increased the final graft yield.展开更多

In order to decrease its surface adsorption to BSA in aqueous solution, surface layer grafting of the gels by radiation technology was carried out. The results showed that hydroxyl propyl methacrylate (HPMA) grained gel exhibited a low level of BSA adsorption and still kept the original thermally sensitive properties of PNIPA hydrogels.展开更多

Electron beam accelerator was used as irradiation source. The effect of ferrous sulfate, sodium nitrate, methanol and glucose on the degree of grafting was demonstrated. The function of the different additives was compared by the grafting of different monomers (AAc and AAm). The results show that the four of these additives are elective on the grafting of AAc. Only two of these additives, ferrous sulfate and methanol were effective on the grafting of AAm.展开更多

The new adsorbent comprised grafted glycidyl methacrylate(GMA) via radiation-induced polymerization as hydrophilic coating and reactive sites; ethylenediamine(EDA) as a spacer arm; Cibacron Blue F3GA(CB F3GA) as an affinity ligand; MPTFE capillary as the supporting matrix. The average density of CB F3GA attachment to MPTFE capillaries was found to be 136.5 μmol/g. The capacity of bilirubin adsorbed on affinity MPTFE capillaries is 76.1 mg bilirubin/g polymer(at 25℃). This new adsorbent has advantages over both membrane and traditional micro-column, and this system is stable and easy to operate. The results of blood tests suggest the CB F3GA affinity capillary has good blood compatibility.展开更多

High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT1R) spectroscopy, and micro-Raman spectroscopy were used to confirm that poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) had been successfully grafted onto the surface of the MWNTs. The effects of experimental parameters on the degree of graft- ing (DG) of PVAc were also investigated, including adsorbed dose, dose rate, initial monomer concentration, and solvents. The grafted MWNTs (MWNTs-g-PVAc) exhibited good solubility in common organic solvents at high mass fraction. In addition, a superhydrophobic composite membrane could be readily fabricated by vacuum filtration of MWNTs-g-PVAc onto a support- ing membrane, as was confirmed by water contact angle testing and visualization by scanning electron microscopy.展开更多
