The main contribution of this paper is the development and demonstration of a novel methodology that can be followed to develop a simulation twin of a railway track switch system to test the functionality in a digital environment. This is important because, globally, railway track switches are used to allow trains to change routes;they are a key part of all railway networks. However, because track switches are single points of failure and safety-critical,their inability to operate correctly can cause significant delays and concomitant costs. In order to better understand the dynamic behaviour of switches during operation, this paper has developed a full simulation twin of a complete track switch system. The approach fuses finite element for the rail bending and motion, with physics-based models of the electromechanical actuator system and the control system.Hence,it provides researchers and engineers the opportunity to explore and understand the design space around the dynamic operation of new switches and switch machines before they are built. This is useful for looking at the modification or monitoring of existing switches, and it becomes even more important when new switch concepts are being considered and evaluated. The simulation is capable of running in real time or faster meaning designs can be iterated and checked interactively. The paper describes the modelling approach, demonstrates the methodology by developing the system model for a novel“REPOINT”switch system, and evaluates the system level performance against the dynamic performance requirements for the switch. In the context of that case study,it is found that the proposed new actuation system as designed can meet(and exceed)the system performance requirements, and that the fault tolerance built into the actuation ensures continued operation after a single actuator failure. 展开更多

Derailment of trains is not unusual all around the world, especially in developing countries, due to unidentified track or rolling stock faults that cause massive casualties each year. For this purpose,a proper condition monitoring system is essential to avoid accidents and heavy losses.Generally, the detection and classification of railway track surface faults in real-time requires massive computational processing and memory resources and is prone to a noisy environment. Therefore,in this paper,we present the development of a novel embedded system prototype for condition monitoring of railway track. The proposed prototype system works in real-time by acquiring railway track surface images and performing two tasks a)detect deformation(i.e.,faults)like squats, shelling, and spalling using the contour feature algorithm and b)the vibration signature on that faulty spot by synchronizing acceleration and image data.A new illumination scheme is also proposed to avoid the sunlight reflection that badly affects the image acquisition process. The contour detection algorithm is applied here to detect the uneven shapes and discontinuities in the geometrical structure of the railway track surface, which ultimately detects unhealthy regions. It works by converting Red,Green, and Blue(RGB)images into binary images, which distinguishes the unhealthy regions by making them white color while the healthy regions in black color. We have used the multiprocessing technique to overcome the massive processing and memory issues. This embedded system is developed on Raspberry Pi by interfacing a vision camera,an accelerometer,a proximity sensor, and a Global Positioning System(GPS)sensors(i.e.,multi-sensors).The developed embedded system prototype is tested in real-time onsite by installing it on a Railway Inspection Trolley(RIT),which runs at an average speed of 15 km/h.The functional verification of the proposed system is done successfully by detecting and recording the various railway track surface faults. An unhealthy frame’s onsite detection processing time was recorded at approximately 25.6ms.The proposed system can synchronize the acceleration data on specific railway track deformation. The proposed novel embedded system may be beneficial for detecting faults to overcome the conventional manual railway track condition monitoring, which is still being practiced in various developing or underdeveloped countries. 展开更多

There may be several internal defects in railway track work that have different shapes and distribution rules, and these defects affect the safety of high-speed trains.Establishing reliable detection models and methods for these internal defects remains a challenging task.To address this challenge,in this study,an intelligent detection method based on a generalization feature cluster is proposed for internal defects of railway tracks.First, the defects are classified and counted according to their shape and location features. Then, generalized features of the internal defects are extracted and formulated based on the maximum difference between different types of defects and the maximum tolerance among same defects’types. Finally, the extracted generalized features are expressed by function constraints, and formulated as generalization feature clusters to classify and identify internal defects in the railway track.Furthermore,to improve the detection reliability and speed,a reduced-dimension method of the generalization feature clusters is presented in this paper.Based on this reduced-dimension feature and strongly constrained generalized features, the K-means clustering algorithm is developed for defect clustering, and good clustering results are achieved.Regarding the defects in the rail head region, the clustering accuracy is over 95%,and the Davies-Bouldin index(DBI)index is negligible, which indicates the validation of the proposed generalization features with strong constraints.Experimental results prove that the accuracy of the proposed method based on generalization feature clusters is up to 97.55%,and the average detection time is 0.12 s/frame,which indicates that it performs well in adaptability, high accuracy, and detection speed under complex working environments. The proposed algorithm can effectively detect internal defects in railway tracks using an established generalization feature cluster model. 展开更多

Some of them were submitted to rebuilding processes while others were just overloaded by additional layers of ballast. Nowadays, Brazil is going through a new railway transport impulse in relation to the increase of load, despite of the necessary supply capacity. For this reason, there were developed evaluations from some Brazilian railways in order to determine their operational conditions. This work shows a comparative analysis of results from two parts of studied old railway, aiming to determine minimum features to enable them to accept higher load axis. One of these studied old railway parts did not have a sub-ballast layer in contrast to the other one. The strains and stresses of these old railway track parts were generated by the same locomotive. 展开更多

It is a challenge to evaluate the conditions of railway track without interruption of regular traffic. In this paper, the authors introduce the detection of cavities under the railway substructure by using forward-looking ground penetrating radar (FLGPR). Main advantages of FLGPR are that such a system can illuminate a large area and can stand off a long distance over its down-looking counterpart. Two methods, frequency wave-number (F-W) synthetic aperture imaging (SAI) and beam-forming by delay and sum (DAS), are applied to process the collected data. Analysis and measuring show that the distinct radar image of the cavity beneath the substructure 1.2 m deep can be formed by these two methods. 展开更多

Frost heaving is a well-known phenomenon in cold regions, which may occur in wet clayey grounds during winter. Railway track upheaval occurring in cold regions during the winter is generally understood as frost heaving in the subgrade layer. However, it has been confirmed that upheaval due to frost heaving sometimes occurs in the ballast layer. This un- derstanding has been observed in active railways in northern Japan. The samples collected from ballast and subgrade layers have been examined for frost heave susceptibilities and confirmed that ballast layers which contain fines may heave. 展开更多

Stiffness is one of the basic performance parameters for railway track. The efficient and accurate stiffness measurement has been considered as the foundation for further development of railway engineering, and therefore has great theoretical and practical significance. Based on a summary of the connotation and measurement of track stiffness, the state of the art of measurement methods for track stiffness was analyzed systematically. The standstill measurement of track stiffness can be performed with the traditional jack-loading method, impact hammer method, FWD (falling weight deflectometer) method, and track loading vehicle method. Although these methods can be adopted in stiffness measurement for a section of railway track, they are not desirable owning to small range and low efficiency. In the recent 20 years, researchers have proposed many methods like unbalancedloading laser displacement method, deflection basin deformation rate method, and eccentricity excitation method to continuously measure track stiffness; however, these methods have drawbacks like poor accuracy, low speed, and insufficient data analysis. In this work, the merits and demerits of these methods were summarized, and optimization suggestions were presented. Based on the wave transmission mechanism and principle of vibration energy harvesting, an overall conception on continuous measurement of stiffness and long-term stiffness monitoring for special sections was proposed. 展开更多

Purpose – The vibration of the rails is a significant source of railway rolling noise, often forming the dominantcomponent of noise in the important frequency region between 400 and 2000 Hz. The purpose of the paper is toinvestigate the influence of the ground profile and the presence of the train body on the sound radiation fromthe rail.Design/methodology/approach – Two-dimensional boundary element calculations are used, in which therail vibration is the source. The ground profile and various different shapes of train body are introduced in themodel, and results are observed in terms of sound power and sound pressure. Comparisons are also made withvibro-acoustic measurements performed with and without a train present.Findings – The sound radiated by the rail in the absence of the train body is strongly attenuated by shieldingdue to the ballast shoulder. When the train body is present, the sound from the vertical rail motion is reflectedback down toward the track where it is partly absorbed by the ballast. Nevertheless, the sound pressure at thetrackside is increased by typically 0–5 dB. For the lateral vibration of the rail, the effects are much smaller. Oncethe sound power is known, the sound pressure with the train present can be approximated reasonably well withsimple line source directivities.Originality/value – Numerical models used to predict the sound radiation from railway rails have generallyneglected the influence of the ground profile and reflections from the underside of the train body on the soundpower and directivity of the rail. These effects are studied in a systematic way including comparisons with measurements. 展开更多

Under repeated train-induced loads, cement and emulsified asphalt mortar(CA mortar) as a viscoelastic material has a time-dependent deformation, part of which is irreversible. This could lead to debonding between the mortar layer and the track slab. Based on the theory of viscoelasticity and the analytical method of the time hardening law(THL), the viscoelastic deformation behavior of CA mortar was studied. Using ABAQUS, we established a solid model of China railway track system(CRTS) Ⅰ prefabricated slab track, with CA mortar at different initial Young’s moduli under cyclic loading corresponding to the influence of actual train loads. The results reveal that the fitted parameters of the THL for CA mortar are suitable for describing its viscoelastic deformation. As the initial Young’s modulus increases, the strain difference before and after cyclic loading gradually decreases, and the displacement difference increases from 0.2 mm to 0.6 mm. The deformation mainly occurs at the end of a mortar layer with longitudinal distribution of about 2.5 times the fasteners’ spacing. It follows that the viscoelastic performance of CA mortar is one of the most important reasons that cause debonding underneath the track slab. Therefore, we suggest that the adverse effects of viscoelastic behavior of CA mortar should be considered when researching such deformation and damage. 展开更多

The effect of the fastener's failure in a railway track on the dynamic forces produced in the wheel-rail contact is studied using the simulation software VAMPIRE to assess the derailment risk of two different vehicles in two curves with distinct characteristics. First, a 3D-FEM model of a real track is constructed, paying special attention to fasteners, and calibrated with displacement data obtained experimentally during a train passage. This numerical model is subsequently used to determine the track vertical and lateral stiffness. This study evidences that although the track can practically lose its lateral stiffness as a consequence of the failure of 7 consecutive fasteners, the vehicle stability would not be necessarily compromised in the flawed zone. Moreover, the results reveal that the uncompensated acceleration and the distance along which the fasteners are failed play an important role in the dynamic behavior of the vehicle-track system, influencing strongly the risk of derailment. 展开更多

Because the existing spectral estimation methods for railway track irregularity analysis are very sensitive to outliers, a robust spectral estimation method is presented to process track irregularity signals. The proposed robust method is verified using 100 groups of clean/contaminated data reflecting he vertical profile irregularity taken from Bejing-Guangzhou railway with a sampling frequency of 33 data every ~10 m, and compared with the Auto Regressive (AR) model. The experimental results show that the proposed robust estimation is resistible to noise and insensitive to outliers, and is superior to the AR model in terms of efficiency, stability and reliability. 展开更多

The volume of rail traffic was increased by 5 % from 2006 to 2010, in Sweden, due to increased goods and passenger traffic. This increased traffic, in turn, has led to a more rapid degradation of the railway track, which has resulted in higher maintenance costs. In general, degradation affects comfort, safety, and track quality, as well as, reliability, availability, speed, and overall railway performance. This case study investigated the needs of railway stakeholders responsible for analysing the track state and what information is necessary to make good maintenance decisions. The goal is to improve the railway track per- formance by ensuring increased availability, reliability, and safety, along with a decreased maintenance cost. Inter- views of eight experts were undertaken to learn of general areas in need of improvement, and a quantitative analysis of condition monitoring data was conducted to find more specific information. The results show that by implement- ing a long-term maintenance strategy and by conducting preventive maintenance actions maintenance costs would be reduced. In addition to that, problems with measured data, missing data, and incorrect location data resulted in increased and unnecessary maintenance tasks. The conclusions show that proactive solutions are needed to reach the desired goals of improved safety, improved availability, and improved reliability. This also includes thedevelopment of a visualisation tool and a life cycle cost model for maintenance strategies. 展开更多

One of the major problems in ballasted railroads is ballast flying, which is the projection of ballast particles from the at-rest position as the train passes over the track of a railway structure, mainly due to high speed. In this research, the possibility of railway ballast flying for the double track Addis-Adama section of the new Addis-Djibouti railway line is assessed by determining the major causes of ballast flying and applying Discrete Element Modeling (DEM) with the aid of Particle Flow Code (PFC3D) software. The analysis comprised of an impact load and ballast material behavior which were used to determine the vibrational speed of individual ballast particles. The governing result from the series of discrete element analyses performed by considering fouled ballast gradation with grain-size diameter of 22.4 mm gives rise to a ballast maximum vibrational speed of 0.014 m/s. Since the ballast vibrational speed for Addis Ababa-Adama line is less than 0.02 m/s that is recommended by the literature, no ballast flight is expected under the present traffic and ballast conditions. 展开更多

The current study is developed based on one of the types of subgrade rupture risk suggested by Selig and Waters (1994). It aims to evaluate subgrade stability railroad, which consists of the slope stability analysis of a railway yard embankment subjected to a wagon load type gondola parked on this track. This proposed analysis was taken into consideration because there are Brazilian railroads in high deterioration level. In some of these lines the tracks are submitted to increasing amount of load every year. The adopted model slope stability to the studied railroad embankments considers the rupture on circular line. It was applied the Geoslope-Slope/W software, version 6, to the evaluation of the platform-slope system. Several situations are adopted to reach the minimum safety slope, permitting to analyze the platform stability to keep railroad traffic under adequate safety level. 展开更多

It transports freight trains of ore, 220 wagons each. These wagons have 2 boogies of 2 axles each and 32 metric tons on metre gauge. Elastic strains were measured on a special part of this railway due to these trains. The main load to evaluate stresses and strains was a G 16 Locomotive, a C-C kind from Vale, a Brazilian Company. The measurements were obtained by dynamic deflectometer installed on a main line of this railway, near Ipatinga, a city from Minas Gerais, one of Brazil states. This track was equipped to obtain stresses under an equal repeated static load A simulation of the stresses was made under critical strain by Ferrovia 1.0 software. It was also made an evaluation of unequal results from neighbor sleepers taking in comparison two equipped parts of this railway, one with compacted ballast and no compaction to the other. The results were strain limited, avoiding breakage or damage to the studied rails. This work analyses these measurements focusing on the improvement of track quality. 展开更多

China railways track structure II (CRTS II) slab ballastless track on bridge is one kind of track structures unique to China. Its main bearing component of longitudinal force is the continuous base plate rather than rail. And the track-bridge interaction is weakened by the sliding layer installed between base plate and bridge deck. In order to study the dynamic response of CRTS II slab ballastless track on bridge under seismic action, a 3D nonlinear dynamic model for simply-supported bridges and CRTS II track was established, which considered structures such as steel rail, fasteners, track plate, mortar layer, base plate, sliding layer, bridge, consolidation, anchors, stoppers, etc. Then its force and deformation features under different intensities of seismic excitation were studied. As revealed, the seismic response of the system increases with the increase of seismic intensity. The peak stresses of rail, track plate and base plate all occur at the abutment or anchors. Both track plate and base plate are about to crack. Besides, the rapid relative displacement between base plate and bridge deck due to the small friction coefficient of sliding layer is beneficial to improve the seismic performance of the system. During the earthquake, a large vertical displacement appears in base plate which leads to frequent collisions between stoppers and base plate, as a result, stoppers may be damaged. 展开更多

In this paper, deep learning technology was utilited to solve the railway track recognition in intrusion detection problem. The railway track recognition can be viewed as semantic segmentation task which extends image processing to pixel level prediction. An encoder-decoder architecture DeepLabv3+model was applied in this work due to its good performance in semantic segmentation task.Since images of the railway track collected from the video surveillance of the train cab were used as experiment dataset in this work, the following improvements were made to the model. The first aspect deals with over-fitting problem due to the limited amount of training data.Data augmentation and transfer learning are applied consequently to rich the diversity of data and enhance model robustness during the training process.Besides, different gradient descent methods are compared to obtain the optimal optimizer for training model parameters. The third problem relates to data sample imbalance, cross entropy(CE)loss is replaced by focal loss(FL)to address the issue of serious imbalance between positive and negative sample.Effectiveness of the improved DeepLabv3+model with above solutions is demonstrated by experiment results with different system parameters. 展开更多
