How to break them down? This paper will first point out and then analyze the obstacles that af fect middle school students'reading ability from two aspects:linguistic obstacles(obstacles of lexicon,grammar and background knowl edge) and non-linguistic obstacles(obstacles of psychology,interest,skill,and habit).After demonstrating different obstacles,the paper also come up with some corresponding strategies in the hope of helping middle school students to be effective English readers. 展开更多

The aim of the research is to obtain information about the current state of children’s extracurricular reading in Bulgaria—basis for further development of information skills and competencies. The study refers to the reading practices and interests of primary school students (7 - 11 years). It was implemented in the period March-June 2020 through electronic questionnaires filled out by the parents of 1169 students. The obtained data were processed with the software product SPSS, v19. A comparative analysis between the reading habits and preferences of children of different ages has been prepared. The followings are established: the thematic scope, the types of preferred readings, the motives for independent choice of reading, as well the preferred format, as the influence of the adults in the formation of the young reader. Purpose: This paper aims to better understand a large number of papers in the medical domain of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related diseases using the machine reading approach. Design/methodology/approach: The study uses the topic modeling method to obtain an overview of the field, and employs open information extraction to further comprehend the field at a specific fact level. Findings: Several topics within the AD research field are identified, such as the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), which can help answer the question of how A1DS/HIV and AD are very different yet related diseases. Research limitations: Some manual data cleaning could improve the study, such as removing incorrect facts found by open information extraction. Practical implications: This study uses the literature to answer specific questions on a scientific domain, which can help domain experts find interesting and meaningful relations among entities in a similar manner, such as to discover relations between AD and AIDS/HIV. Origlnality/value: Both the overview and specific information from the literature are obtained using two distinct methods in a complementary manner. This combination is novel because previous work has only focused on one of them, and thus provides a better way to understand an important scientific field using data-driven methods. 展开更多

Although there are many different approaches to reading, particularly interactive model of reading process, ESL (English as a Second Language) and EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners, even with sufficient linguistic background knowledge, still suffer from inability to comprehend a reading text. It is held that there is no shortage of studies in reading; however, there seems to be no systematic framework through which learners can incorporate the vast array of factors involved in the reading as an interaction. To solve this problem, this paper aims to postulate a framework whereby readers are systematically exposed to and engaged in interacting with all the local and global meaning-making resources that make up a text as an instance of discourse on the basis of systemic genre. As any text of a different genre has a different goal achieved through a series of particular elements each with distinct discoural and linguistic realizations, this paper introduces a flexible scaffold for readers to interact with reading text from a discoursal perspective working out the overall purpose of the text as a particular genre, identifying the obligatory elements employed to accomplish that goal, getting to know a series of activities being talked about, discovering their logical and semantic relationships, and finally figuring out their grammatical structures. This framework can be applied to other language learning and teaching skills as well as translation. 展开更多

This paper is intended to reveal the likelihood that conceptual categorization can be used to understand a text by reconstructing the semantic categories through which the author's meaning is conveyed, and proposes an alternative way to look into reading comprehension. It is proposed that categorization can be taken as an alternative approach to second/foreign language reading instruction. That is, while reading comprehension is defined in terms of the ability to recognize the inclusion and membership properties of contextually determined semantic categories in a text, the learner needs to arrange the events, actions, or concepts into a structured unit, both horizontally and vertically. Categorization theory will be introduced in relation to Rosch famous studies (1973, 1975), examples taken from a graded reader will be illustrated as how to identify items with category structure, and finally issues that are not addressed in this paper will be discussed. 展开更多

The present study constitutes a critical appraisal of the deconstructive reading of Rousseau's Confessions that Derrida undertakes in the second part of Of Grammatology. In this examination, the author will first list some of the significations into which Derrida disperses (forced, as he asserts himself, by an "inassimilable residue" in the text itself) the meaning that he has already construed as apparently simple during the first moment of deconstructive reading (i.e., "the doubling commentary"); the author will then go on to enquire into the operations which enable Derrida to arrive at these self-conflicting significations. The main aim of this essay is to demonstrate that it is not language alone that disables the philosophy of Rousseau and enables the philosophy of Derrida. When Derrida attempts to support his philosophy through an analysis of Rousseau's theory of language and the alleged contradictions in Rousseau's texts, he misinterprets basic tenets of these texts in order to make them conform to the presuppositions of the deconstructive approach. The "reversal" and "displacement" of metaphysical conceptuality in the text of the Confessions is made possible after the text has had meanings transposed into it from a plurality of other texts. Derrida attributes to the text significations he discovers by construing, explicating and over-reading passages that occur elsewhere in Rousseau's total oeuvre (especially in the Essay on the Origin of Languages). 展开更多

Nevertheless, the problem of whether Derrida reproduces Rousseau's basic claims adequately has remained a peripheral concern. This has meant that this may constitute a misreading and the consequences that this would have for the deconstructive operation itself have not adequately examined.
