According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution affects millions of people worldwide. Hundreds of thousands of deaths each year and a range of diseases, particularly among vulnerable groups (i.e., children, the elderly, and people with special medical conditions), are attributed to air pollution. These effects are not always caused by single pollutant in the air; rather, they are considered consequences of the multi-pollutants to which people are simultaneously exposed.展开更多

The 7th Asian Aerosol Conference (AAC) of the Asian Aerosol Research Assembly (AARA), was held in Xi'an, China, during August 17-20, 2011. The 7th AAC engaged 550 participants from the sciences, industry, and regulatory communities from 21 countries. The conference included -350 plenary, platform, and poster presentations. In this special issue of PARTICUOLOGY, 15 peer-reviewed scientific articles have been selected to publish from the conference abstracts to represent recent advances for aerosol and environment study in Asia.展开更多

Consequently, the pathogenesis of NPC has been the focus of our study for many years. Induction of experimental NPC by chemical carcinogens began from 1972. Later, NPC in rats was successfully induced by nitroso compounds, especially N, N’-dinitroso-piperazine (DNPZ) which possesses relative organospecificity and is able to induce squamous cell carcinoma of nasopharynx in rats even by subcutaneous injection. NPC induced in rats is slightly different from the NPC of human due to species difference: it often developed as well-dif-展开更多

Guided by the experience of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), several new anticancer drugs have been found. Indirubin from indigofera tinctoria (青黛) is useful for the treatment of chronic myelocytic leukemia. On the basis of structure-activity relationship studies of these compounds, a second generation drug (N-methyl isoindigotin) has been developed. Clinical studies demonstrated that it is more effective than indirubin, 1O-hydroxy campothecin derived from Camptotheca acuminata (喜树) have exhibited definite activity on rodent tumors and it is used for phase Ⅱ studies. Spherulites are common crystalline structures observed in semi-crystalline polymers. Many studies[1-5] have been performed to investigate the detailed structures and formation mechanisms. It is generally accepted that the three-dimensional geometry of spherulites develops from a stack of lamellae. During the growth process, the stacked lamellae splay apart continually and branch occasionally[6.7]. However, there are many unanswered questions. For example, what is a pri-展开更多
