[Method] The soil incubation experiment was conducted to study the effect of red mud on the pH values and electrical conductivity (EC), and the remediation efficiency of red mud on lead (Pb), zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) in heavy metal contaminated soil. [Result] Red mud addition reduced the content of exchangeable Pb, Zn and Cd in the soil significantly. Compared with the control, when incubated for 30, 60 and 90 d with the red mud dosage of 4% (W/W), the exchangeable Pb content was decreased by 39.25%, 41.38% and 50.19%; exchangeable Zn content was decreased by 49.26%, 57.32% and 47.16%; and exchangeable Cd content was decreased by 19.53%, 24.06% and 25.70%, respectively. The application of red mud had significant impact on the share of Pb, Zn and Cd contents in five forms, and different amounts of red mud application all reduced the proportion of exchangeable Pb, Zn and Cd to the total Pb, Zn and Cd. In addition, the proportion of exchangeable Pb, Zn and Cd to total Pb, Zn and Cd decreased with the increasing amount of red mud addition. [Conclusion] The study provided references for reasonable application of red mud and reduction of heavy metal pollution in paddy soil.展开更多

In this study, the uptake of phosphate by red mud activated by heat treatment and acid-heat treatment was investigated. The factors influencing the adsorption were also investigated. The result showed that the red mud sample treated using acid-heat method at 80℃ with 0.25 mol/L HCl for 2 h achieved the highest phosphate removal. For the heat-activated red mud, the sample heated at 700℃ for 2 h preformed better than the other heat treatment. Phosphate removal by the activated red mud was significantly pH dependent, and pH 7 was the optimal pH for phosphate removal. The adsorption fits Langmuir isotherm model well and the maximum adsorption capacities of the acid-heat activated red mud and the heat activated samples were 202.9 mgP/g and 155.2 mgP/g, respectively.展开更多

The present paper deals with the use of thermal plasma technology for producing pig iron from red mud waste fines. The smelting reduction of red mud was carried out in a 35 kW DC extended arc thermal plasma reactor. Red mud was properly mixed with fluxes and graphite (fixed carbon, 99%) as a reductant as per stoichiometric requirement. The effect of various process parameters like a reductant, fluxes and smelting time on iron recovery was studied and optimized. An optimum condition for the maximum recovery of iron was obtained. A new thermal plasma process applicable to direct iron making from red mud waste fines that would achieve significant utilization of red mud was proposed.展开更多

In this study, a novel calcification-carbonation method was developed to recover alkali and alumina from Bayer red mud under mild reaction conditions. Batch experiments were performed to evaluate the potential effects of im- portant parameters such as temperature, amount of CaO added, and CO2 partial pressure on the recovery of alkali and alumina. The results showed that 95.2% alkali and 75.0% alumina were recovered from red mud with decreases in the mass ratios of Na2O to Fe2O3 and of Al2O3 to Fe2O3 from 0.42 and 0.89 to 0.02 and 0.22, respectively. Results show that heating was ef-fective, among which thermal activation of red mud at 600 ℃ was most effective. Chemical analysis suggested that cement added with 600 ℃ thermally activated red mud yielded more calcium ion dur-ing the early stage of hydration and less at later stage in liquid phase of cement water suspension sys-tem, more combined water and less calcium hydroxide in its hardened cement paste. MIP measure-ment and SEM observation proved that the hardened cement paste had a similar total porosity and a less portion of large size pores hence a denser microstructure compared with that added with original red mud.展开更多

Red mud belongs to a two-phase flow of materials with high viscosity and a high concentration of non-sedimentation, homogeneous solid-liquids. It is difficult to test its rheological properties under atmospheric pressure. Measurements such as rotational viscometry can not reflect the real state of the material when it is flowing in a pipe. Tested rheological parameters are somewhat higher than the actual values. In our investigation, grain shape, distinctive modality and grain size distribution of red mud were tested. Based on the principle of tube measurement, rheological experiments on red mud at different concentrations were carried out by using our independently developed tube-type pressure theology test facility, and obtained constitutive equations. We conclude that red mud behaves as non-Newtonian pseudo-plastic fluid in pipe flows. Its consistency and power-law indices vary considerably with different concentrations.展开更多

The adsorption fits Langmuir isotherm model well and the maximum adsorption capacities of the acid-heat activated red mud and the heat activated samples were 202.9 mgP/g and 155.2 mgP/g, respectively.
文摘Red mud, an insoluble residue produced during alkali leaching of bauxite, is considered as a low-grade iron ore containing 30% to 50% iron. A new thermal plasma process applicable to direct iron making from red mud waste fines that would achieve significant utilization of red mud was proposed.
文摘Activated carbon (AC) was modified by tri-butyl phosphate (TBP) for selectively extracting scandium from red mud and characterized by BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) surface area. The modified AC had a preferential adsorption to scandium. The influences of adsorbent dos- age, adsorption temperature, and time on adsorption capacity and selectivity to scandium were examined. An optimum adsorbent dosage (-6.25 g/L), adsorption temperature (308 K), and adsorption time (40 min) were figured out. A pseudo-second-order kinetics model was employed for describing the adsorption process of scandium.

文摘A feasible approach to selectively recover iron and rare earth elements(REEs)from red mud through acid leaching-coordination-solvent extraction was proposed. The leaching efficiencies of Fe,Al,Ti,Sc,La,Ce,Nd and Y can reach up to 95.9%,82.1%,68.3%,93.3%,82.3%,96.9%,98.3%and 95.6%,respectively,under the optimal condition in the leaching process.Aliquat 336 showed excellent extraction performance of iron in chloride-rich solution, and the maximum extraction efficiency can reach over 96%in one time extraction while the loss of other metals was less than 10%,under the condition of Aliquat 336 concentration(v/v)of 30%,aqueous-organic ratio of 1.0 and extraction time of 20 min.Furthermore,P204 can effectively extract the scandium while Al and most other REEs remain in the aqueous phase. This approach may provide a new insight for the recovery of valuable resources from red mud.

文摘Red mud produced in the Bayer process is a hazardous solid waste because of its high alkalinity; however, it is rich in valuable components such as titanium, iron, and aluminum. The processed red mud with less than 0.5wt% Na2O can potentially be used as a construction material.

文摘Ceramic foams were prepared using red mud and fly ash as raw materials with sodium borate as sintering aid agent, starchand MnO2as foaming agent, respectively. The influence of the amount of starch or MnO2on the crystalline phase, pore morphologyand physical–chemical porosities was studied. The results showed that the main crystal phases of samples with starch addition andMnO2addition were sodalite phase Na6(AlSiO4)6and Na8(SiAlO4)6MnO4,respectively.The SEM images showed that the variation ofporous structure was mainly dominated by the addition of foaming agent. With the increase of foaming agent, the samples exhibitedbetter comprehensive properties:bulk density of0.59?0.96g/cm3,porosity of41.82%?63.51%,water absorption of3.16%?9.17%,compressive strength of4.22?8.38MPa,flexural strength of2.44?5.82MPa,acid resistance of95.59%?99.60%,alkali resistance of99.82%?99.99%.Based on these properties, the ceramic foams can be used in building field.
文摘Proper treatment of acidleaching tailings(ALTs)of vanadiumbearing stone coal minerals is of great urgency. One approach is adding it into the raw materials during the preparation of lightweight aggregate(LWA).But clay is always needed. In this paper, another solid waste, red mud,was mixed with ALTs as a source of flux components instead of clay.Evaluation of the physical characteristics, morphological structures,as well as crystal phases during the sintering process were investigated. When their mixtures with a proper ratio were sintered at 1080℃,a glassy phase with certain viscosity was formed, and the gases generated simultaneously were encapsulated by the melt. Finally,LWA with a onehour water absorption as low as 1.46%,a bulk density as low as 728.76 kgm 3 and a compressive strength as high as 10.77 MPa was fabricated.

文摘Red mud was activated to be a mineral admixture for Portland cement by means of heating at different elevated temperatures from 400 ℃ to 700 ℃ . MIP measure-ment and SEM observation proved that the hardened cement paste had a similar total porosity and a less portion of large size pores hence a denser microstructure compared with that added with original red mud.

文摘Large scale utilization is still an urgent problem for waste red mud with a high content of alkaline metal component in the future.Laterite ores especially the saprolitic laterite ore are one refractory nickel resource, the nickel and iron of which can be effectively recovered by direct reduction and magnetic separation.Alkaline metal salts were usually added to enhance reduction of laterite ores. The feasibility of co-reduction roasting of a saprolitic laterite ore and red mud was investigated. Results show that the red mud addition promoted the reduction of the saprolitic laterite ore and the iron ores in the red mud were co-reduced and recovered.By adding 35wt%red mud,the nickel grade and recovery were 4.90wt%and 95.25wt%,and the corresponding iron grade and total recovery were 71.00wt%and 93.77wt%,respectively.The X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy(SEM-EDS)analysis results revealed that red mud addition was helpful to increase the liquid phase and ferronickel grain growth. The chemical compositions"Ca O and Na_2O"in the red mud replaced Fe O to react with Si O_2 and Mg Si O_3 to form augite.

文摘The absorbent composing of Bayer red mud and water was prepared and applied to removing SO2 from flue gas.Effects of the ratio of liquid to solid(L/S),the absorption temperature, the inlet SO2 concentration, the O2 concentration,SO4^2-and other different components of Bayer red mud on desulfurization were conducted. The mechanism of flue gas desulfurization was also established. The results indicated that L/S was the prominent factor, followed by the inlet SO2 concentration and the temperature was the least among them. The optimum condition was as follows:L/S,the temperature and the SO2 concentration were 20:1,25℃and 1000 mg/m^3,respectively,under the gas flow of 1.5 L/min.The desulfurization efficiency was not significantly influenced when O2 concentration was above 7%.The accumulation of SO4^2-inhibited the desulfurization efficiency. The alkali absorption and metal ions liquid catalytic oxidation were involved in the process, which accounted for 98.61%.
文摘Red mud has relatively small solid particles (d50= 13.02 μm) and will flow in paste form under high pressure during pipeline transport. Its consistency and power-law indices vary considerably with different concentrations.

文摘New ultra-lightweight sludge-red mud ceramics(ULS-RMC) were prepared by red mud(RM),clay and dried sewage sludge(DSS).The properties and mechanism of RM in the preparation of ULS-RMC were discussed. The chemical components, thermal properties and mineral phases of RM were determined by energy dispersive X-ray(EDX),differential scanning calorimetry/thermal gravimetric analysis(DSC/TGA) and X-ray diffraction(XRD),respectively.Constant dosage of DSS to clay and different amounts of RM were utilized in the preparation of ULS-RMC.Physical properties test(bulk density, grain density, water absorption and expansion ratio),XRD and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) were employed to characterize the ULS-RMC.The results show that RM exhibits high hydroscopic property and good water-retention property, and bloating property and fluxing property of RM are caused by abound of gaseous components and flux, respectively. The two chemical properties are utilized to discuss the mineral phases and microstructures differences between ULSC and ULS-RMC.
文摘The stir casting technique was used to fabricate aluminum2024matrix hybrid composites reinforced with SiC(5%,mass fraction)and red mud(5%-20%,mass fraction)particles. The developed composites were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and electron dispersive spectrum(EDS)techniques.Further,Taguchi’s approach of experimental design was used to examine the tensile strength of the hybrid composites(with minimum number of experiments). It was found that the reinforcing particles were well dispersed and adequately bonded in the hybrid composites. The density and porosity of the hybrid composites were reduced with the increase in reinforcement content. The tensile strength of the composites increased with the increase in the red mud content and the ageing time. The developed model indicated that the red mud content had the highest influence on the tensile strength response followed by the ageing time.Overall,it was found that Al2024/SiC/red mud composites exhibited superior tensile strength(about34%higher)in comparison to the Al2024alloy under optimized conditions.

文摘D2EHPA(P204),tri-butyl-phosphate(TBP)and sodium chloride(NaCl)were attractive for selective extraction of scandium from acid leaching solution of red mud.The extraction parameters of P204 concentration(X_(P204)),NaCl concentration(C_(NaCl)),pH value, reaction time, stirring speed and O/A were investigated to extract scandium and separate iron from the acid leaching solution. The extraction mechanism was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR)and thermodynamic theory. The single-stage extraction efficiency of scandium, iron andβ(Sc/Fe)were 99.1%,9.4%and 1061.2,respectively,with C_(NaCl) of 75 g/L and XP204 of 0.75 at solution pH value of 1.2 and stirring speed of 200 r/min for 6 min,in which a good separation effect of scandium and iron was obtained. The vibration absorption peak Sc─O was contributed to the extraction of scandium with P204.The complex[FeCln]^(3−n) existed in the solution with adding NaCl into the acid leaching solution. The value of n was higher and the valence state of the complex[FeCln]^(3−n) was lower with an increase of chloride concentration, which restricts the extraction efficiency of iron with P204.The extraction of three stages in the counter-current simulation experiments was carried out according to the McCabe-Thiele diagram.Gibbs free energy change(ΔG)of−5.93 kJ/mol,enthalpy change(ΔH)of 23.45 kJ/mol and entropy change(ΔH)of 98.54 J/(mol·K)were obtained in the solvent extraction proces, which indicate that the extraction reaction is easily spontaneous and endothermic and a proper increase of temperature is conducive to the extraction of scandium.
