Using solar energy to produce syngas via the endothermic reforming of methane has been extensively inves- tigated at the laboratory- and pilot plant-scales as a promising method of storing solar energy. One of the challenges to scaling up this process in a tubular reformer is to improve the reactor's performance, which is limited by mass and heat transfer issues. High thermal conductivity Cu foam was therefore used as a sub-strate to improve the catalyst's thermal conductivity during solar reforming. We also developed a method to coat the foam with the catalytically active component NiMg3AlOx. The Cu foam-based NiMg3AlOx performs better than catalysts supported on SiSiC foam, which is currently used as a substrate for solar-reforming cat- alysts, at high gas hourly space velocity (≥400,000 mL/(g.h)) or at low reaction temperatures (≤ 720 ℃). The presence of a γ-Al2O3 intermediate layer improves the adhesion between the catalyst and substrate as well as the catalytic activity. 展开更多

The deactivation behavior by crystallite growth of nickel nanoparticles on various supports(carbon nanofibers, zirconia, Si C, α-Al2O3 and γ-Al2O3) was investigated in the aqueous phase reforming of ethylene glycol. Supported Ni catalysts of ~10 wt% were prepared by impregnation of carbon nanofibers(CNF),Zr O2, SiC, γ-Al2O3 and α-Al2O3. The extent of the Ni nanoparticle growth on various support materials follows the order CNF ~ ZrO2〉 SiC 〉 γ-Al2O3〉〉 α-Al2O3 which sequence, however, was determined by the initial Ni particle size. Based on the observed nickel leaching and the specific growth characteristics; the particle size distribution and the effect of loading on the growth rate, Ostwald ripening is suggested to be the main mechanism contributing to nickel particle growth. Remarkably, initially smaller Ni particles(~12 nm) supported on α-Al2O3 were found to outgrow Ni particles with initially larger size(~20 nm). It is put forward that the higher susceptibility with respect to oxidation of the smaller Ni nanoparticles and differences in initial particle size distribution are responsible for this behavior. 展开更多

Carbon deposition is sensitive to the metal particle sizes of supported Ni catalysts in CH_4/CO_2 reforming. To explore the reason of this phenomenon,Ni4,Ni8,and Ni12 which re flect the different cluster thicknesses supported on the MgO(100) slabs, have been employed to simulate Ni/MgO catalysts, and the reaction pathways of CH_4/CO_2 reforming on Nix/MgO(100) models are investigated by density functional theory. The reforming mechanisms of CH_4/CO_2 on different Nix/MgO(100) indicate the energy barriers of CH_4 dissociated adsorption,CH dissociation, and C oxidation three factors are all declining with the decrease of the Ni cluster sizes. The Hirshfeld charges analyses of three steps as described above show only Ni atoms in bottom two layers can obtain electrons from the MgO supporters, and the main electron transfer occurs between adsorbed species and their directly contacted Ni atoms.Due to more electron-rich Ni atoms in contact with the MgO supporters, the Ni/MgO catalysts with small Ni particles have a strong metal particle size effect and lead to its better catalytic activity. 展开更多

Decreasing supplies of high quality crude oil and increasing demand for high quality distillates have motivated the interest in converting natural gas to liquid fuels, especially with the present boom in natural gas proven reserves. Nevertheless, one major issue is the curtailment of costs incurred in producing synthesis gas from natural gas, which account for approximately 60% of the costs used in producing liquid fuels. While there are three main routes to convert natural gas to syngas: steam reforming (SMR), partial Oxidation (POX) and auto-thermal reforming (ATR). Significant new developments and improvements in these technologies, established innovative processes to minimize greenhouse gases emission, minimize energy consumption, enhance syngas processes, adjust the desired H2/CO ratio and change the baseline economics. This article reviews the state of the art for the reforming of natural gas to synthesis gas taking into consideration all the new innovations in both processes and catalysis. 展开更多

We reports an efficient approach for production of hydrogen from crude bio-oil and biomass char in the dual fixed-bed system by using the electrochemical catalytic reforming method. The maximal absolute hydrogen yield reached 110.9 g H2/kg dry biomass. The product gas was a mixed gas containing 72%H2, 26%CO2, 1.9%CO, and a trace amount of CH4. It was observed that adding biomass char (a by-product of pyrolysis of biomass) could remarkably increase the absolute H2 yield (about 20%-50%). The higher reforming temperature could enhance the steam reforming reaction of organic compounds in crude bio-oil and the reaction of CO and H20. In addition, the CuZn-Al2O3 catalyst in the water-gas shift bed could also increase the absolute H2 yield via shifting CO to CO2. 展开更多

A homogeneous catalyst [Cp*Rh(NH3)(H2O)2]-(3+) has been found for the clean conversion of methanol and water to hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The simple and easily available reaction steps can circumvent the formation of CO, therefore, making it possible to avoid inactivating catalysts and contaminating the hydrogen fuel. Different from conventional reforming method for hydrogen production, no additional alkaline or organic substances are required in this method. Valuable hydrogen can be obtained under ambient pressure at 70 C, corresponding TOF is 83.2 h 1. This is an unprecedented success in reforming methanol to hydrogen. Effects of reaction conditions, such as reaction temperature, initial methanol concentration and the initial p H value of buffer solution on the hydrogen evolution are all systematically investigated. In a certain range, higher reaction temperature will accelerate reaction rate. The slightly acidic condition is conducive to rapid hydrogen production. These findings are of great significance to the present establishment of the carbon-neutral methanol economy. 展开更多

Sinter-locked microfibrous networks consisting of -3 vol.% of 8 p.m (dia.) nickel microfibers have been utilized to entrap -30vo1.% of 100-200 μm dia. porous AI203. ZnO and CaO were then highly dispersed onto the pore surface of entrapped A1203 by the incipient wetness impregnation method. Due to the unique combination of surface area, pore size/particle size, thermal conductivity, and void volume, the resulting microfibrous catalyst composites provided significant improvement of catalytic bed reactivity and utilization efficiency when used in methanol steam reforming. Roughly 260 mL/min of reformate, comprising 〉70% H2, 〈5% CO and trace CH4, with 〉97% methanol conversion, could be produced in a I cm3 bed volume of our novel microfihrous entrapped ZnO-CaO/Al2O3 catalyst composite at 470℃ with a high weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 15 h-1 using steam/methanol (1.3/1) mixture as feedstock. Compared to a packed bed of 100-200μm ZnO-CaO/Al2O3, our composite bed provided a doubling of the reactor throughput with a halving of catalyst usage. 展开更多
