Assessment of the exposure dose for workers is crucial to protecting workers from the radiological risk. This preliminary study estimates the potential radiological exposure for a soil remediation worker at a nuclear decommissioning site contaminated with Cs-137 in Korea, and then calculates the maximum workable soil concentration to comply with the occupational dose constraint of 20 mSv per year. The Korean characteristic data, detailed exposure scenarios for workers by the type of work, and relevant exposure pathways were used in the dose estimation. As a result, the most severe exposure-induced work type was identified as the excavator operation with an annual individual dose of 5.92×10^-5 mSv for a unit concentration of soil, from which the derived maximum workable soil concentration was 3.38×105 Bq/kg.Furthermore,dose contribution by each exposure pathway was found to be decreased in the following order:external radiation exposure, soil ingestion, dust inhalation, and skin contamination. The results of this study are expected to be used effectively to optimize radiation protection for workers and establish appropriate work procedures for future site remediation. 展开更多

Problems associated with organochlorine pesticide (OCP)-contaminated sites in China have received wide attention. To solve such problems, innovative ex-situ methods of site remediation are urgently needed. We investigated the feasibility of the extraction method with different organic solvents, ethanol, 1-propanol, and three fractions of petroleum ether, using a soil collected from Wujiang (W J), China, a region with long-term contamination of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs). We evaluated different influential factors, including organic solvent concentration, washing time, mixing speed, solutiomto-soil ratio, and washing temperature, on the removal of DDTs from the WJ soil. A set of relatively better parameters were selected for extraction with 100 mL L-1 petroleum ether (60-90 ℃): washing time of 180 min, mixing speed of 100 r min-I, solution-to-soil ratio of 10:1, and washing temperature of 50 ℃. These selected parameters were also applied on three other seriously OCP-polluted soils. Results demonstrated their broad-spectrum effectiveness and excellent OCP extraction performance on the contaminated soils with different characteristics. 展开更多

Widespread contamination by nitrobenzene(NB) in sediments and groundwater requires better understanding of the biogeochemical removal process of the pollutant. NB degradation, coupled with dissimilatory iron reduction, is one of the most efficient pollutant removal methods. However, research on NB degradation coupled to indigenous microorganism dissimilatory iron reduction stimulated by electron donors is still experimental. A model for remediation in an actual polluted site does not currently exist. Therefore, in this study, the dynamics was derived from the Michaelis–Menten model(when the mass ratio of emulsified vegetable oil and NB reached the critical value 91:1). The effect of SO4^(2-), NO3^-, Ca^(2+)/Mg^(2+), and the grain size of aquifer media on the dynamics were studied, and the NB degradation dynamic model was then modified based on the most significant factors. Utilizing the model, the remediation time could be calculated in a contaminated site. 展开更多
