Macquarie Dictionary define‘Risk’as the chance of an adverse event depending on the circumstances. In the field of engineering, the risk is often described as a specific unwanted event and including the consequences or loss.Usually residual risk from civil engineering project would lead to serious effects. The control of residual risk is an important subject in modern civil engineering management research. In this paper,a residual risk controlling methods will be present.Firstly, the definition and other mentioned concepts will be introduced. It includes the definition of residual risk and other concepts of risk that are often confused.Next, basic ways of dealing risk will be mentioned. 展开更多

Structural protection measures are designed to protect the population and infrastructure against natural hazards up to a specific predefined protection goal.Extreme events with intensities that exceed the capacity of these protection structures are called“cases of overload”and are associated with“residual risks”that remain after the implementation of protection measures. In order to address residual risks and to reduce the damages from overload events,a combination of structural protection measures with additional, nonstructural measures is required.Based on data collected through a literature review,a questionnaire survey, expert interviews, and an expert workshop we highlight the status quo as well as key challenges of dealing with residual risks and cases of overload in Alpine countries in the context of geohydrological hazards and gravitational mass movements. We present a holistic conceptual framework that describes the relationships of residual risks, cases of overload, and protection goals in the context of both risk governance and integrated risk management. This framework is valuable for decision makers aiming at an improved management of natural hazards that takes adequate account of residual risk and cases of overload in Alpine countries and mountain areas worldwide. 展开更多

As pesticide residues in bayberry has raised serious concern from the public in China, a monitoring survey was carried out during 2013–2014 and 157 samples were analyzed in total. Twenty-three pesticides were detected among the 44 pesticides analyzed and at least one pesticide was detected in 63% of 99 samples. Whereas 45.6% of samples were found with two or more pesticide residues, and 23.6% of samples with four or more pesticide residues. Probabilistic risk assessments indicated that estimated daily intake(EDI) of cyhalothrin at the P97.5th percentile level is 1.11 times larger than the acceptable daily intake(ADI) for children, the estimated short-term intake(ESTI) at the P97.5th percentile level is 1.9 and 1.78 times larger than the acute reference dose(ARf D) for adult and children, respectively, indicating the potential risk concern from pyrethroids. EDI of the pesticides with anti-androgenic effects ranged from 0.15–2.46 of ADI, the probability of exposure exceeding the ADI was 7.1 and 31.1% for adults and children, respectively, the probability of exposure of pyrethroids exceeding the ADI was 3.8% for children. Exposures for other pesticides and groups were below 1.0. Because the co-occurrence of frequency of cyhalothrin and cypermethrin was 9.55%, the combinations of pesticides detected with anti-androgenic effects has not been found in the present monitoring, the results indicate that the pesticide residues in bayberry will not constitute serious public health risk, however, they are significant for the management of pesticide use on bayberry and dietary health risk in China. 展开更多

The development of the Internet of Things(IoT)calls for a comprehensive in-formation security evaluation framework to quantitatively measure the safety score and risk(S&R)value of the network urgently. In this paper,we summarize the architecture and vulnerability in IoT and propose a comprehensive information security evaluation model based on multi-level decomposition feedback. The evaluation model provides an idea for information security evaluation of IoT and guides the security decision maker for dynamic protection.Firstly,we establish an overall evaluation indicator system that includes four primary indicators of threat information, asset, vulnerability, and management, respectively. It also includes eleven secondary indicators of system protection rate, attack detection rate, confidentiality, availability, controllability, identifiability, number of vulnerabilities, vulnerability hazard level, staff organization, enterprise grading and service continuity, respectively. Then,we build the core algorithm to enable the evaluation model, wherein a novel weighting technique is developed and a quantitative method is proposed to measure the S&R value. Moreover,in order to better supervise the performance of the proposed evaluation model,we present four novel indicators includes residual risk, continuous conformity of residual risk,head-to-tail consistency and decrease ratio, respectively.Simulation results show the advantages of the proposed model in the evaluation of information security for IoT. 展开更多
