A study was carried out on 31 new hybrids in rain-deficient areas of C<span style="white-space:nowrap;">&#244;</span>te d’Ivoire. These areas were the regions of Djekanou, Toumodi and Yamoussoukro. The Divo region (favourable zone) was used as a control. The aim of this study was to determine the behaviour of these hybrids under drought conditions. The experimental setup was a Fischer block for each region. The treatments were the 31 families, with 3 replications and when the four regions were taken together, the study was a two-factor (region and family) trial. Drought caused increased mortality and specific leaf mass and reduced growth and development of progeny in rain-deficient areas. Five (5) progenies were found to be jointly successful in Divo, Djekanou and Yamoussoukro (F30, F15, F19, F31, and F33). On the other hand, 3 other families (F16, F36 and F29) also performing well in Divo were found in Toumodi. 展开更多

Salt and drought tolerance, high yield and quality, disease and pest resistance of cotton varieties are new requirements for the current situation in cotton production. Hengyou 12 is a transgenic Bt cotton variety bred by hybridizing JD 28 (interspeciflc progeny of upland cotton, sea-island cotton, wild cotton species) as female parent with GK55 (transgenic Bt cotton variety) as male parent. The combining of parents was based on the complementary principle of parental traits. Hengyou 12 with strong heterosis was selected under disease stress, pest stress, salt stress and drought stress. This variety has many excellent characteristics, such as good resis- tance to diseases and pests, high yield, excellent quality, strong drought resistance and salt tolerance. 'Hengyou12' was approved by Hebei Province in 2015, and is suitable for planting in middle and south areas of Hebei and similar ecological areas in the Yellow River basin. 展开更多

Hybrid rice Fanyou 7206(FY7206), derived from the cross between a sterile line Fanyuan A and a restorer line Fuhui 7206, was bred by the Rice Research Institute, Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, China. FY720... Hybrid rice Fanyou 7206(FY7206), derived from the cross between a sterile line Fanyuan A and a restorer line Fuhui 7206, was bred by the Rice Research Institute, Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, China. FY7206 was characterized by moderate blast resistance, cold tolerance, as well as wide adaptability, and high yields. The blast resistance results indicated that the frequencies of blast races in race B, race C and the total resistance frequency for FY7206 were 95.5%, 100.0% and 97.2%, respectively. The disease resistance results showed that the leaf blast grade for FY7206 was level 1 and panicle blast was level 5. The indoor spray results indicated that FY7206 was resistant to 11 isolates of Magnorpathe oryzae. The blast resistance of FY7206 might be derived from the high expression of blast resistance gene Pid3. The results for simulated cold resistance in an artificial climate chamber indicated that the cold tolerance for FY7206 was moderate at the booting and flowering stages. The cold tolerance results also indicated that FY7206 could be tolerant to temperatures as low as 10 °C at the seedling stage. The q RT-PCR results showed that the expression of cold tolerance gene Ctb1 in FY7206 was relatively high. These results suggested that FY7206 is a hybrid indica rice variety with good comprehensive characteristics, including blast resistance and cold tolerance. 展开更多

We studied the relationship between endogenous ABA and resistance to temperature stress in seedlings of hybrid rice. The hybrid rice Combinations Shanyou 63, Shanyou 287, Weiyou 63, and Weiyou 287 were treated under 2℃ and 42℃ respectively for 48 h. Endogenous ABA concentrations were obtained by gas chromatography with electron capture detector (GC-ECD) and a nickel labelled external standard. Leakage of electrolytes were determined. At optimal temperature (27℃), there was difference between the level of endogenous ABA and the leakage of electrolytes in hybrid rice combinations, which attributed to genetic difference. ABA level in Weiyou system was higher than that in Shanyou, and there were distinctions between Shanyou system itself (see table). At 2℃, the ABA content of rice seedling was increased. To improve the ballistic resistance of the ballistic resistant composites, this paper deals with the microscopically fractographic analysis of their failure caused by Fragments Simulated Projectiles (FSP) and bullet with the objective to clarify the failure modes of the composites, and to further improve the ballistic resistance of the ballistic systems by hybridizing based on the currently market available materials.After the analysis, it has been found that the penetration of the FSP into the panels causes shear failure in the impact side of the target but extensive tension failure in the distal side of the composite target. The failure modes also include matrix fragmentation, and delamination, and with resin content as high as 30%, more filaments are broken by cutting in the composite. Compared with the failure caused by bullet, there are more cutting or shearing for the failure caused by FSP, but more compressive failure caused by bullet. This paper also discusses the effects of hybridizing different types of fabrics on the ballistic resistance of the composite based on the observations and numerical simulation. 展开更多

The relationship between embB mutation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and ethambutol (EMB) resistance of the clinical isolates of tuberculous patients in China was investigated by reversedot blot hybridization (RDBH) in addition to evaluating the clinical value with application of PCR-RDBH technique to detect EMB resistance. In the present study, the genotypes of the 258 bp fragments of embB genes from 196 clinical isolates of M. tuberculosis were analysed with RDBH and DNA sequencing. It was demonstrated that 60 out of 91 phenotypically EMB-resistant isolates (65.9%) showed 5 types of missense mutations at codon 306 of embB gene, resulting in the replacement of the Met residue of the wild type strain with Val, Ile or Leu residues. In these mutations, the GTP mutation (38/91, 41.8% ) and the ATA mutation (16/91, 17.6% ) were the most encountered genotypes. The embB mutation at codon 306 could also be found in 69 isolates of phenotypically EMB-sensitive but resistant to other anti-tuberculous drugs, but no such gene mutation could be found in 36 strains of drug-sensitive isolates. Meanwhile, the concordance with the results of DNA sequencing fcr one wide-type probe and 5 probes for specific mutations was 100%. It was concluded that the EMB-resistance occurring in most M. tuberculosis is due to appearance of embB mutation at codon 306, and the PCR-RDBH assay was proved to be a rapid, simple and reliable method for the detection of gene mutations, which might be a good alternative for the drug-resistance screening. 展开更多

Insecticide resistance is an evolutionary adaptation that develops quite quickly in mosquitoes because of the high selection pressure of chemical insecticides, rapid generation time and large population size. Identification of genes associated with insecticide resistance is fundamental to understand the complex processes responsible for resistance. We compared the gene transcriptional profiles of parathion-resistant and -susceptible Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus using a combination of suppression subtractive hybridization and complementary DNA (cDNA) microarray techniques. A total of 278 colonies were selected from the resistant-susceptible mosquito subtractive library, 38 of which showed more than two fold stronger immunoblotting signals in the resistant strain than in the susceptible strain using cDNA microarray selection. The sequencing results showed that the 38 colonies can be matched to 12 genes of C. p. quinquefasciatus. Eight genes were confirmed to be overexpressed by more than two fold in the resistant strain. These genes encode chymotrypsin-1, theta glutathione S-transferase, lipase 3, larval serum protein 1β chain, cytochrome b, mitochondrial ribosomal large subunit, 28S rRNA, and a protein with unknown function. This study serves as a preliminary attempt to identify new genes associated with organophosphate resistance in this mosquito species and provides insights into the complicated physiological phenomenon of insecticide resistance. 展开更多
