With declines in the values of PSII photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm), PSII actual quantum yield (Phi(PSII)), photochemical quenching (qP) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) during dehydration, zeaxanthin significantly increased in control Boea leaves under very weak light condition, while no zeaxanthin accumulation was detected in Boea leaves treated with dithiothreitol (DTT) and Boea leaves in the dark, and after 3 d rehydration, the parameters Fv/Fm, Phi(PSII), qP and NPQ showed full recovery in control Boea leaves under very weak light condition, but the parameters only underwent partial recovery in Boea leaves treated with DTT and Boea leaves in the dark, suggesting that the recovery of photosystem II (PSII) photochemical activities in Boea leaves was obviously affected by treatments with DTT and darkness, therefore, zeaxanthin may play an important protective role in desiccated Boea leaves even under very weak light conditions.展开更多

Another type of resurrection angiosperms that lost its chlorophyll dining desiccation is called poikilochlorophyllous desiccation-tolerant plants (PDTs). HDTs have been received more attention because of simplicity of protection mechanism which is much easy to the study and utilization of the desiccation tolerance of resurrection angiosperms. Recent advances in studies of photosynthesis of resurrection angiosperms indicate that photochemical activities are sensitive indicators for the study of physiological state of resurrection angiosperms during desiccation and rehydration. Photochemical activities of resurrection angiosperms are inhibited with loss of water similar to those of general plants, however, the magic thing is that they could reactivate rapidly during rehydration even losing more than 95% water. Up-regulations in xanthophyll cycle and antioxidative systems as well as preservation in integrity and stability of photosynthetic membranes during desiccation may be very important to desiccation tolerance of resurrection angiosperms. The fact that phosphate treatment in rehydration stage also strongly influences resurrection indicated importance of studies on rehydration stages of resurrection angiosperms.展开更多

Study was carried out to assess the impact of different populations on photosynthetic pigment contents and their effect on physiological activity of these species. The experiment was conducted with leaves of R. serbica collected from nine populations in Kosovo, three in Albania and two in Macedonia, while for R. nathaliae four populations in Macedonia. For this purpose plants after collection from their natural populations were kept for 24 hours at constant temperature and humidity and in natural photoperiod. According to our data the pigment contents (Total chl + Carot) of R. serbica, measured as mg per gram dry weight (DW), were higher (7.06 mg·g-1 DW) in Radaci populations (Kosovo) and lower (4.63 mg·g-1 DW) in Jukniu Mountain-Kruja (Albania). On the other hand, the higher (5.28 mg·g-1 DW) of pigment contents (Total chl + Carot) of R. nathaliae were observed in Vorca populations and the lower (4.24 mg·g-1 DW) in Kaparll?k populations. Ratio chlorophyll a/b of R. serbica in Kruja Castle populations from Albania was the higher (3.68) comparing with Zhlebi populations from Kosovo (1.68). Similarly in case of R. nathaliae the higher (3.36) value was in Kaparll?k populations and the lower (3.12) in Matka populations. The data obtained were further analyzed using one-way ANOVA and a significant change was recorded in the different populations. These studies clearly indicate that the Ramonda plants from different ecological habitats there have been changes of photosynthetic pigment contents.展开更多

We first show that the Markov branching process with killing and stable resurrection is just the Feller minimum process which is honest and thus unique. We then further show that this honest Feller minimum process is not only positive recurrent but also strongly ergodic. The generating function of the important stationary distribution is explicitly expressed. For the interest of comparison and completeness, the results of the Markov branching processes with killing and instantaneous resurrection are also briefly stated. A new result regarding strong ergodicity of this difficult case is presented. The birth and death process with killing and resurrection together with another example is also analyzed.展开更多

The idea of existence of tachyons comes from Arnold Sommerfeld. Bilaniuk and Sudarshan (1969) published the article "Particles beyond the Light Barrier" in Physics Today magazine where they analyze the theoretical properties of tachyons. From the tachyon idea I have hypothesized the existence of a Superluminal Parallel Universe constituted by Superluminal Conscious Entities that, like the theoretical tachyons, only can exist at speeds greater than the speed of light. This hypothesis should be subject to scientific inquiry but also to philosophical speculation or spiritual imagination. Later I imagine that the Superluminal Parallel Universe is the Spiritual World thought by theologians and idealistic philosophers. I relate the Superluminal Conscious Entities with Spirits and the Superluminal Parallel Universe comprising infinity of Superluminal Conscious Entities with God, the Universal Spirit, thus being simultaneously Unity and Infinity given that superluminal speed implies non-local, instantaneous connections. I imagine that the material Universe might have emerged from that God, assuming that many Spirits could lose superluminality generating the two classes of substances of the Universe: the class of subluminal particles of matter and the class of luminal particles, like photons. I imagine a Soul as a quasi superluminal entity dropped from a Spirit to animate material entities. The substances of both Universes would have evolved in parallel, with life arising and evolving from the subluminal substance driven by companion Souls. Let's also imagine that the natural way of being of Spirits and free Souls is a state similar to conscious dreaming. In this imagination, we all, Souls, would have been a part of God and we all might be again. We all are makers of the Universe. We all might get connected with the Spirits in God to beg for and to receive inspiration.展开更多

On the other hand, many Evangelical Christians believe that the dead go directly to Heaven to be with the Lord. But in Roman Catholicism, purgatory is considered as the place where most dead believers expiate their remaining sins before entering the visible presence of God. This doctrine has been criticized extensively both by Catholics and Evangelicals in spite of its massive defence by the Holy office. Several alternative views about the resurrection of the dead have been propounded by some twentieth-century Protestants and some notable Catholic theologians. Although the doctrine of purgatory has been approved and reaffirmed by several Church councils, the questions that still remain are: Is the doctrine of purgatory biblically justifiable? Does the work of salvation extend beyond the grave? This study attempts to find answers to these questions. The study therefore surveys the doctrine of purgatory in the light of the biblical teachings about death. The second section surveys the background to the doctrine with reference to Judaism, the Apocrypha, the New Testament, the Church Fathers, and Church Councils. The third section looks at the nature of purgatory, the duration and the nature of the punishment meted out to those who go to purgatory and how souls are released from purgatory. The fourth section also examines the biblical teaching on death. The study concludes that the doctrine of purgatory is based on tradition rather than the Bible. The Bible emphasizes the finality of one's destiny in this life rather than after this life.展开更多

Here, we report a high-quality genome assembly of 301 Mb for the diploid spike moss Selaginella tamariscina, a primitive vascular resurrection plant. We predicated 27 761 protein-coding genes from the assembled S. tarnariscina genome, 11.38% (2363) of which showed signifi- cant expression changes in response to desiccation. Approximately 60.58% of the S. tamariscina genome was annotated as repetitive DNA, which is an almost 2-fold increase of that in the genome of desiccation- sensitive Selaginella moellendorffii. Genomic and transcriptomic analyses highlight the unique evolution and complex regulations of the desiccation response in S. tamariscina, including species-specific expan- sion of the oleosin and pentatricopeptide repeat gene families, unique genes and pathways for reactive oxygen species generation and scavenging, and enhanced abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis and potentially distinct regulation of ABA signaling and response. Comparative analysis of chloroplast genomes of several Selaginella species revealed a unique structural rearrangement and the complete loss of chloroplast NAD(P) H dehydrogenase (NDH) genes in S. tamariscina, suggesting a link between the absence of the NDH com- plex and desiccation tolerance. Taken together, our comparative genomic and transcriptomic analyses reveal common and species-specific desiccation tolerance strategies in S. tamariscina, providing signifi- cant insights into the desiccation tolerance mechanism and the evolution of resurrection plants.展开更多
