AIM: To take fundus examination in the preterm neonates to observe the common diseases and report the outcomes in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Guangzhou between May 2008 and May 2011. METHODS: Fundus exami...AIM: To take fundus examination in the preterm neonates to observe the common diseases and report the outcomes in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Guangzhou between May 2008 and May 2011. METHODS: Fundus examinations were performed with Retcam II in 957 prematures. RESULTS: There were 957 prematures in this study, including 666 males and 291 females, 2 triple births, 152 twins and 803 singletons. During the three years, 86 infants with any stage retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) (9.0%), 123 infants with retinal hemorrhage (12.9%), 10 infants with neonatal fundual jaundice (1.0%) and 3 babies with congenital choroidal coloboma (0.3%) were found. CONCLUSION: Early detection and prompt treatment of ocular disorders in neonates is important to avoid lifelong visual impairment. Examination of the eyes should be performed in the newborn period and at all well-child visits.展开更多

Treatment time, total number of laser shots, and intra-operative pain were assessed as well.·RESULTS: All EL-1 grade eyes and 50% of EL-2 eyes were successfully treated with the green laser, while 50%of EL-2 eyes, 96% of EL-3 eyes, and 50% of EL-4 eyes required the yellow laser. The red laser was effective in the remaining 4% of EL-3 and 50% of EL-4 eyes.·CONCLUSION: Longer wavelength lasers are more effective in delivering laser burns through cataract when we use a multicolor pattern scan laser system.展开更多
AIM:To investigate the ratio of spontaneous regression of retinopathy of prematurity(ROP)and to explore the possible relevant predictive factors.METHODS:A retrospective review of 405 infants who were diagnosed with RO...AIM:To investigate the ratio of spontaneous regression of retinopathy of prematurity(ROP)and to explore the possible relevant predictive factors.METHODS:A retrospective review of 405 infants who were diagnosed with ROP and mother during pregnancy were collected.Stage,zone,and duration of ROP were recorded.Statistical analysis was performed on 51 possible predictive factors.RESULTS:Totally 356 infants showed spontaneous regression.The incidence was 100%,95.3%,and 22.7%in stage 1,2,and 3,respectively.The 13.4%of the ROP with plus disease eventually resolved spontaneously.All affected eyes of aggressive posterior retinopathy of prematurity(APROP)failed to spontaneously regress.The mean duration of ROP was 7.2wk in patients with spontaneous resolution of ROP.Days of mechanical ventilation(OR=0.981,95%CI,0.965-0.997,P=0.021),retinal hemorrhage(OR=0.173,95%CI,0.064-0.470,P=0.001),delivery pattern(OR=2.750,95%CI,1.132-6.681,P=0.025),maternal anemia in pregnancy(OR=0.142,95%CI,0.036-0.563,P=0.005),the stages(at initial diagnosis OR=0.183,95%CI,0.041-0.816,P=0.026;at final diagnosis OR=0.031,95%CI,0.006-0.167,P<0.001),and with plus disease or not(OR=0.005,95%CI,0.001-0.031,P<0.001)were independent predictive factors of the spontaneous regression of ROP.CONCLUSION:Most mild ROP can spontaneously resolve.Active treatment is still recommended for stage 3 ROP,zone I ROP,AP-ROP,and ROP with plus disease.Prolonged mechanical ventilation and concurrent retinal hemorrhage reduce the likelihood of spontaneous ROP resolution.The pattern of delivery and the mother's anemia during pregnancy can also affect the prognosis of ROP.展开更多
The pathogenesis of ocular hemorrhage in abusive head trauma/shaken baby syndrome(AHT/SBS)is complex.Whereas severe hemorrhagic retinopathy has a robust association with AHT/SBS,mild disease is less specific.We report...The pathogenesis of ocular hemorrhage in abusive head trauma/shaken baby syndrome(AHT/SBS)is complex.Whereas severe hemorrhagic retinopathy has a robust association with AHT/SBS,mild disease is less specific.We report the ocular and cerebral findings in an 8‑month‑old girl with spastic torticollis who presented following confessed,violent sagittal plane acceleration‑deceleration with impact.Autopsy revealed subdural hemorrhage over the convexities,ischemic brain injury,and preexisting polymicrogyria.Ocular examination showed extensive but unilateral retinal hemorrhage,extending broadly to the ora serrata,with perimacular retinal folds and retinoschisis.The retina of the right globe was entirely normal.The findings in this case,suggest that movement of the globe within the orbit with acceleration‑deceleration,in this case greater on one side due to torticollis,may be the primary factor for severe hemorrhagic retinopathy associated with AHT/SBS.The findings argue against putative global mechanisms,such as intracranial hypertension.展开更多
