A numerical approach based on the solution of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equations using the shear-stress transport(SST) turbulence model has been employed to investigate the hydrodynamic performance and flow of tunnel thrusters. The flow passages between adjacent blades are discretized with prismatic cells so that the boundary layer flow is resolved down to the viscous sub-layer.The hydrodynamic performances predicted by the quasi-steady approach agree well with the experimental data for three impellers covering a range of blade area and pitch.Through analysis of the flow field, the reason why the hub of impeller also contributes to thrust which can amount to 40%—60% of the impeller thrust, and the mechanism of the impeller inducing an axial force on the hull are elucidated. 展开更多

In the present paper, the longitudinal dynamic flight stability properties of two model insects are predicted by an approximate theory and computed by numerical sim- ulation. The theory is based on the averaged model (which assumes that the frequency of wingbeat is sufficiently higher than that of the body motion, so that the flapping wings' degrees of freedom relative to the body can be dropped and the wings can be replaced by wingbeat-cycle-average forces and moments); the simulation solves the complete equations of motion coupled with the Navier-Stokes equations. Comparison between the theory and the simulation provides a test to the validity of the assumptions in the theory. One of the insects is a model dronefly which has relatively high wingbeat frequency (164 Hz) and the other is a model hawkmoth which has relatively low wingbeat frequency (26 Hz). The results show that the averaged model is valid for the hawkmoth as well as for the dronefly. Since the wingbeat frequency of the hawkmoth is relatively low (the characteristic times of the natural modes of motion of the body divided by wingbeat period are relatively large) compared with many other insects, that the theory based on the averaged model is valid for the hawkmoth means that it could be valid for many insects. 展开更多

A mixed algorithm of central and upwind difference scheme for the solution of steady/unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is presented. The algorithm is based on the method of artificial compressibility and uses a third-order flux-difference splitting technique for the convective terms and the second-order central difference for the viscous terms. The numerical flux of semi-discrete equations is computed by using the Roe approximation. Time accuracy is obtained in the numerical solutions by subiterating the equations in pseudotime for each physical time step. The algebraic turbulence model of Baldwin-Lomax is ulsed in this work. As examples, the solutions of flow through two dimensional flat, airfoil, prolate spheroid and cerebral aneurysm are computed and the results are compared with experimental data. The results show that the coefficient of pressure and skin friction are agreement with experimental data, the largest discrepancy occur in the separation region where the lagebraic turbulence model of Baldwin-Lomax could not exactly predict the flow. 展开更多

To develop an efficient and robust aerodynamic analysis method for numerical optimization designs of wing and complex configuration, a combination of matrix preconditioning and multigrid method is presented and investigated. The time derivatives of three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are preconditioned by Choi-Merkle preconditioning matrix that is originally designed for two-dimensional low Mach number viscous flows. An extension to three-dimensional viscous flow is implemented, and a method improving the convergence for transonic flow is proposed. The space discretizaition is performed by employing a finite-volume cell-centered scheme and using a central difference. The time marching is based on an explicit Rtmge-Kutta scheme proposed by Jameson. An efficient FAS multigrid method is used to accelerate the convergence to steady-state solutions. Viscous flows over ONERA M6 wing and M100 wing are numerically simulated with Mach numbers ranging from 0.010 to 0.839. The inviscid flow over the DLR-F4 wing-body configuration is also calculated to preliminarily examine the performance of the presented method for complex configuration. The computed results are compared with the experimental data and good agreement is achieved. It is shown that the presented method is efficient and robust for both compressible and incompressible flows and is very attractive for aerodynamic optimization designs of wing and complex configuration. 展开更多

In the present paper, the lateral dynamic flight stability properties of two hovering model insects are predicted by an approximate theory based on the averaged model, and computed by numerical simulation that solves the complete equations of motion coupled with the Naviertokes equations. Comparison between the theoretical and simulational results provides a test to the validity of the assumptions made in the theory. One of the insects is a model dronefly which has relatively high wingbeat frequency (164Hz) and the other is a model hawkmoth which has relatively low wingbeat frequency (26 Hz). The following conclusion has been drawn. The theory based on the averaged model works well for the lateral motion of the dronefly. For the hawkmoth, relatively large quantitative differences exist between theory and simulation. This is because the lateral non-dimensional eigenvalues of the hawkmoth are not very small compared with the non-dimensional flapping frequency (the largest lateral non-dimensional eigenvalue is only about 10% smaller than the non-dimensional flapping frequency). Nevertheless, the theory can still correctly predict variational trends of the dynamic properties of the hawkmoth's lateral motion. 展开更多

In order to study complicated interacting flow field over projectile with lateral jets. External interacting turbulence flow over projectile with lateral jets was numerically simulated firstly in supersonic speed and zero attack angle. The three dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier Stokes equations and implicit finite volume TVD scheme were applied. In order to avoid zonal method, ’O’ type grid of single zone including projectile base was produced by algebraic arithmetic. Body fitted grid was generated for the lateral nozzle exit successfully so that the nozzle exit can be simulated more accurately. The high Reynolds number two equation κ ε turbulence models were used. The main features of the complex flow are captured. The two kinds of flow field over projectile with and without lateral jets are compared from shock structure, pressure of body and base, etc . It shows that lateral jets not only can provide push force, but also change aerodynamics characteristic of projectile significantly. The results are very important for the study of projectile with lateral rocket boosters. 展开更多

Wave forces acting on a vertical cylinder at different locations on a slope beach in the near-shore region are investigated considering solitary waves as incoming waves.Based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and the k-ε turbulence model, wave forces due to the interaction between the solitary wave and cylinder are simulated and analyzed with different incident wave heights and cylinder locations. The numerical results are first compared with previous theoretical and experimental results to validate the model accuracy. Then, the wave forces and characteristics around the cylinder are studied, including the velocity field, wave surface elevation and pressure. The effects of relative wave height,Keulegan-Carpenter(KC)number and cylinder locations on the wave forces are also discussed. The results show that the wave forces exerted on a cylinder exponentially increase with the increasing incident wave height and KC number. Before the wave force peaks, the growth rate of the wave force shows an increasing trend as the cylinder moves onshore. The cylinder location has a notable effect on the wave force on the cylinder in the near-shore region. As the cylinder moves onshore, the wave force on the cylinder initially increases and then decreases. For the cases considered here, the maximum wave force appears when the cylinder is located one cylinder diameter below the still-water shoreline.Furthermore, the fluid velocity peaks when the maximum wave force appears at the same location. 展开更多

In this paper, the forecasting equations of a 2nd-order space-time differential remainder are deduced from the Navier-Stokes primitive equations and Eulerian operator by Taylor-series expansion. Here we introduce a cubic spline numerical model(Spline Model for short),which is with a quasi-Lagrangian time-split integration scheme of fitting cubic spline/bicubic surface to all physical variable fields in the atmospheric equations on spherical discrete latitude-longitude mesh.A new algorithm of"fitting cubic spline—time step integration—fitting cubic spline—……"is developed to determine their first-and2nd-order derivatives and their upstream points for time discrete integral to the governing equations in Spline Model. And the cubic spline function and its mathematical polarities are also discussed to understand the Spline Model’s mathematical foundation of numerical analysis. It is pointed out that the Spline Model has mathematical laws of"convergence"of the cubic spline functions contracting to the original functions as well as its 1st-order and 2nd-order derivatives. The"optimality"of the 2nd-order derivative of the cubic spline functions is optimal approximation to that of the original functions. In addition,a Hermite bicubic patch is equivalent to operate on a grid for a 2nd-order derivative variable field.Besides, the slopes and curvatures of a central difference are identified respectively, with a smoothing coefficient of 1/3,three-point smoothing of that of a cubic spline. Then the slopes and curvatures of a central difference are calculated from the smoothing coefficient 1/3 and three-point smoothing of that of a cubic spline, respectively.Furthermore,a global simulation case of adiabatic,non-frictional and"incompressible"model atmosphere is shown with the quasi-Lagrangian time integration by using a global Spline Model, whose initial condition comes from the NCEP reanalysis data, along with quasi-uniform latitude-longitude grids and the so-called"shallow atmosphere"Navier-Stokes primitive equations in the spherical coordinates. The Spline Model, which adopted the Navier-Stokes primitive equations and quasi-Lagrangian time-split integration scheme, provides an initial ideal case of global atmospheric circulation. In addition, considering the essentially non-linear atmospheric motions, the Spline Model could judge reasonably well simple points of any smoothed variable field according to its fitting spline curvatures that must conform to its physical interpretation. 展开更多

By comparing the energy spectrum and total kinetic energy, the effects of numerical errors (which arise from aliasing and discretization errors), subgrid-scale (SGS) models, and their interactions on direct numerical simulation (DNS) and large eddy simulation (LES) are investigated, The decaying isotropic turbulence is chosen as the test case. To simulate complex geometries, both the spectral method and Pade compact difference schemes are studied. The truncated Navier-Stokes (TNS) equation model with Pade discrete filter is adopted as the SGS model. It is found that the discretization error plays a key role in DNS. Low order difference schemes may be unsuitable. However, for LES, it is found that the SGS model can represent the effect of small scales to large scales and dump the numerical errors. Therefore, reasonable results can also be obtained with a low order discretization scheme. 展开更多

A kind of direct numerical simulation method suitable for supercritical carbon dioxide jet flow has been discussed in this paper. The form of dimensionless nonconservative compressible Navier-Stokes equations in a two-dimensional cartesian coordinate system is derived in detail. High accurate finite difference compact schemes based on non-uniform grid system are introduced to solve the equations. The simulation results of the three vortex pairing phenomenon of plane mixing layer and a compressible axisymmetric jet flow field show that the discussed numerical simulation method is feasible to calculate the supercritical carbon dioxide jet fluid. And it is found that the difficulties of splitting the convective terms in conservation Navier-Stokes equations, which are brought by the supercritical carbon dioxide fluid pressure state equation, can be avoided by solving the nonconservative compressible Navier-Stokes equations. 展开更多

In this paper,we present a numerical model of a vertical-axis turbine(VAT)with active-pitch torque control. The model is based upon the Wind and Tidal Turbine Embedded Simulator(WATTES)and WATTES-V turbine realisations in conjunction with the actuator line method(ALM),and uses OpenFOAM to solve the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(URANS)equations with two-equation k-εturbulence closure. Our novel pitch-controlled system is based on an even pressure drop across the entire rotor to mitigate against dynamic stall at low tip speed ratio. The numerical model is validated against experimental measurements and alternative numerical predictions of the hydrodynamic performance of a 1:6 scale UNH-RM2 hydrokinetic turbine.Simulations deploying the variable pitch mechanism exhibit improved turbine performance compared to measured data and fixed zero-pitch model predictions.Near-wake characteristics are investigated by examining the vorticity distribution near the turbine. The pitch-controlled system is demonstrated to theoretically decrease turbulence generated by turbine rotations, mitigate the intensity of vortex shedding and size of detached vortices, and significantly enhance the performance of a vertical-axis hydrokinetic turbine for rated tip-speed ratios. 展开更多

In this article dedicated to the modeling of vertical mass transfers between the biofilm and the bulk flow, we have, in the first instance, presented the methodology used, followed by the presentation of various results obtained through analyses conducted on velocity fields, different fluxes, and overall transfer coefficients. Due to numerical constraints (resolution of relevant spatial scales), we have restricted the analysis to low Schmidt numbers (Sc=0.1, Sc=1, and Sc=10) and a single roughness Reynolds number (Re*=150). The analysis of instantaneous concentration fields from various simulations revealed logarithmic concentration profiles above the canopy. In this zone, the concentration is relatively homogeneous for longer times. The analysis of results also showed that the contribution of molecular diffusion to the total flux depends on the Schmidt number. This contribution is negligible for Schmidt numbers Sc≥0.1, but nearly balances the turbulent flux for Sc=0.1. In the canopy, the local Sherwood number, given by the ratio of the total flux (within or above the canopy) to the molecular diffusion flux at the wall, also depends on the Schmidt number and varies significantly between the canopy and the region above. The exchange velocity, a purely hydrodynamic parameter, is independent of the Schmidt number and is on the order of 10% of in the present case. This study also reveals that nutrient absorption by organisms near the wall depends on the Schmidt number. Such absorption is facilitated by lower Schmidt numbers. 展开更多

Supercritical fluid has been widely applied in many industrial applications. The traditional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS)equations are directly applied for turbulent flow and heat transfer of the supercritical fluid, ignoring turbulent effect of the thermal physical properties due to the intense nonlinearity. This paper deduces a set of Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for supercritical fluid(SCF-RANS equations)to depict turbulent flow and heat transfer of the supercritical fluid taking all the physical parameters as variables. The SCF-RANS equations include many new correlation terms due to fluctuation of the thermal physical properties.Model methods for the new correlation term have been discussed for closing the SCF-RANS equations. Some of them have relatively mature models, while others are completely new and need profound physical theoretical analysis for proposing reasonable models. This paper provides referable information for these new correlations as far as authors know. The SCF-RANS equations not only provide the formulation special for flow and heat transfer of the supercritical fluid, but also represent the most sophisticate form of the RANS equations, for every involved physical property has been considered as variable without any simplification. 展开更多

Rotor-stator cavities are frequently encountered in engineering applications such as gas turbine engines. They are usually subject to an external hot mainstream crossflow which in general is highly swirled under the effect of the nozzle guide vanes. To avoid hot mainstream gas ingress, the cavity is usually purged by a stream of sealing flow. The interactions between the external crossflow, cavity flow, and sealing flow are complicated and involve all scales of turbulent unsteadiness and flow instability which are beyond the resolution of the Reynolds-average approach. To cope with such a complex issue,a wall-modeled large-eddy simulation(WMLES)approach is adopted in this study. In the simulation,a 20°sector model is used and subjected to a uniform pre-swirled external crossflow and a stream of radial sealing flow.It is triggered by a convergent Reynoldsaveraged Navier-Stokes(RANS)result in which the shear stress transport(SST)turbulent model is used.In the WMLES simulation, the Smagoringsky sub-grid scale(SGS)model is applied.A scalar transportation equation is solved to simulate the blending and transportation process in the cavity. The overall flow field characteristics and deviation between RANS and WMLES results are discussed first. Both RANS and WMLES results show a Batchelor flow mode, while distinct deviation is also observed.Deviations in the small-radius region are caused by the insufficiency of the RANS approach in capturing the small-scale vortex structures in the boundary layer while deviations in the large-radius region are caused by the insufficiency of the RANS approach in predicting the external crossflow ingestion. The boundary layer vortex and external ingestion are then discussed in detail, highlighting the related flow instabilities. Finally, the large-flow structures induced by external flow ingress are analyzed using unsteady pressure oscillation signals. 展开更多

With increased spin speed of the rotator shaft, turbulence occurs in the gas film between the stator and rotor seal faces. For the micro-scale flow in the gas film and grooves, turbulence can change the pressure distribution of the gas film. Hence, the seal performance is influenced. However, turbulence effects and methods for their evaluation are not considered in the existing industrial designs of dry-gas seal. The present paper numerically obtains the turbulent flow fields of a spiral-groove dry-gas seal to analyze turbulence effects on seal performance. The direct numerical simulation (DNS) and Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) methods are utilized to predict the velocity field properties in the grooves and gas film. The key performance parameter, open force, is obtained by integrating the pressure distribution, and the obtained result is in good agreement with the experimental data of other researchers. Very large velocity gradients are found in the sealing gas film because of the geometrical effects of the grooves. Considering turbulence effects, the calculation results show that both the gas film pressure and open force decrease. The RANS method underestimates the performance, compared with the DNS. The solution of the conventional Reynolds lubrication equation without turbulence effects suffers from significant calculation errors and a small application scope. The present study helps elucidate the physical mechanism of the hydrodynamic effects of grooves for improving and optimizing the industrial design or seal face pattern of a dry-gas seal. 展开更多

The separated turbulent flow around a circular cylinder is investigated using Large-Eddy Simulation (LES), Detached-Eddy Simulation (DES, or hybrid RANS/LES methods), and Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS). The purpose of this study is to examine some typical simulation approaches for the prediction of complex separated turbulent flow and to clarify the capability of applying these approaches to a typical case of the separated turbulent flow around a circular cylinder. Several turbulence models, i.e. dynamic Sub-grid Scale (SGS) model in LES, the DES-based Spalart-Allmaras (S-A) and κ-ω Shear-Stress- Transport (SST) models in DES, and the S-A and SST models in URANS, are used in the calculations. Some typical results, e.g., the mean pressure and drag coefficients, velocity profiles, Strouhal number, and Reynolds stresses, are obtained and compared with previous computational and experimental data. Based on our extensive calculations, we assess the capability and performance of these simulation approaches coupled with the relevant turbulence models to predict the separated turbulent flow. 展开更多

The equations of motion of an insect with flapping wings are derived and then simplified to that of a flying body using the "rigid body" assumption. On the basis of the simplified equations of motion, the longitudinal dynamic flight stability of four insects (hoverfly, cranefly, dronefly and hawkmoth) in hovering flight is studied (the mass of the insects ranging from 11 to 1,648 mg and wingbeat frequency from 26 to 157Hz). The method of computational fluid dynamics is used to compute the aerodynamic derivatives and the techniques of eigenvalue and eigenvector analysis are used to solve the equations of motion. The validity of the "rigid body" assumption is tested and how differences in size and wing kinematics influence the applicability of the "rigid body" assumption is investigated. The primary findings are: (1) For insects considered in the present study and those with relatively high wingbeat frequency (hoverfly, drone fly and bumblebee), the "rigid body" assumption is reasonable, and for those with relatively low wingbeat frequency (cranefly and howkmoth), the applicability of the "rigid body" assumption is questionable. (2) The same three natural modes of motion as those reported recently for a bumblebee are identified, i.e., one unstable oscillatory mode, one stable fast subsidence mode and one stable slow subsidence mode. (3) Approximate analytical expressions of the eigenvalues, which give physical insight into the genesis of the natural modes of motion, are derived. The expressions identify the speed derivative Mu (pitching moment produced by unit horizontal speed) as the primary source of the unstable oscillatory mode and the stable fast subsidence mode and Zw (vertical force produced by unit vertical speed) as the primary source of the stable slow subsidence mode. 展开更多

Three typical phase differences between ... Aerodynamic force and flow structures of two airfoils in a tandem configuration in flapping motions axe studied, by solving the Navier-Stokes equations in moving overset grids. Three typical phase differences between the fore- and aft-airfoil flapping cycles are considered. It is shown that: (1) in the case of no interaction (single airfoil), the time average of the vertical force coefficient over the downstroke is 2.74, which is about 3 times as large as the maximum steady-state lift coefficient of a dragonfly wing; the time average of the horizontal force coefficient is 1.97, which is also large. The reasons for the large force coefficients are the acceleration at the beginning of a stroke, the delayed stall and the 'pitching-up' motion near the end of the stroke. (2) In the cases of two-airfoils, the time-variations of the force and moment coefficients on each airfoil are broadly similar to that of the single airfoil in that the vertical force is mainly produced in downstroke and the horizontal force in upstroke, but very large differences exist due to the interaction. (3) For in-phase stroking, the major differences caused by the interaction are that the vertical force on FA in downstroke is increased and the horizontal force on FA in upstroke decreased. As a result, the magnitude of the resultant force is almost unchanged but it inclines less forward. (4) For counter stroking, the major differences are that the vertical force on AA in downstroke and the horizontal force on FA in upstroke are decreased. As a result, the magnitude of the resultant force is decreased by about 20 percent but its direction is almost unchanged. (5) For 90 degrees -phase-difference stroking, the major differences axe that the vertical force on AA in downstroke and the horizontal force on FA in upstroke axe decreased greatly and the horizontal force on AA in upstroke increased. As a result, the magnitude of the resultant force is decreased by about 28% and it inclines more forward. (6) Among the three cases of phase angles, inphase flapping produces the largest vertical force (also the largest resultant force); the 90 degrees -phase-difference flapping results in the largest horizontal force, but the smallest resultant force. 展开更多

The time courses of wing and body kinematics of two free-flying drone-flies, as they performed saccades, were measured using 3D high-speed video, and the morpho- logical parameters of the wings and body of the insects were also measured. The measured wing kinematics was used in a Navier-Stokes solver to compute the aerodynamic forces and moments acting on the insects. The main results are as following. (1) The turn is mainly a 90° change of heading. It is made in about 10 wingbeats (about 55 ms). It is of interest to note that the number of wingbeats taken to make the turn is approximately the same as and the turning time is only a little different from that of fruitflies measured recently by the same approach, even if the weight of the droneflies is more than 100 times larger than that of the fruitflies. The long axis of body is about 40° from the horizontal during the maneuver. (2) Although the body rotation is mainly about a vertical axis, a relatively large moment around the yaw axis (axis perpendicular to the long axis of body), called as yaw moment, is mainly needed for the turn, because moment of inertial of the body about the yaw axis is much larger than that about the long axis. (3) The yaw moment is mainly pro- duced by changes in wing angles of attack: in a right turn, for example, the dronefly lets its right wing to have a rather large angle of attack in the downstroke (generally larger than 50°) and a small one in the upstroke to start the turn, and lets its left wing to do so to stop the turn, unlike the fruitflies who generate the yaw moment mainly by changes in the stroke plane and stroke amplitude. 展开更多

A parallel algorithm and code MVFT(multi-viscous-fluid and turbulence) of large-eddy simulation(LES) is developed from our MVPPM(multi-viscous-fluid piecewise parabolic method),and performed to solve the multi compressible Navier-Stokes(N-S) equations. The effect of the unresolved subgrid-scale(SGS) motions on the large scales is represented by different SGS stress models in LES.A Richtmyer-Meshkov instability experiment of the evolution of a rectangular block of SF6,which occupies half of the height of the shock tube test section, following the interaction with a planar shock wave,is numerically and exhaustively simulated by this code. The comparison between experimental and simulated images of the evolving SF6 block shows that they are consistent. The numerical simulations reproduce the complex developing process of SF6 block, which grows overturningly. The geometric quantities that characterize the extents of SF6 block are also compared in detail between numerical simulations and experiment with good agreements between them,a quantitative demonstration of the developing law of SF6 block. There is an evident discrepancy between the three numerical simulations for the maximum position of the right edge of block at the late stage, because the right interface grows complicated and the dissipation is different for different SGS models. The SGS turbulent dissipation, molecular viscosity dissipation and SGS turbulent kinetic energy have been studied and analyzed. They have a similar distribution to the large eddy structures. The SGS turbulent dissipation is much greater than the molecular viscosity dissipation;the SGS turbulent dissipation of Vreman model is smaller than the Smagorinsky model. In general, the simulated results of Vreman SGS model are better compared with the dynamic viscosity and Smagorinsky SGS model. The vorticity and circulation deposition on the block interface have also been investigated. 展开更多
