Magnetic particles can be uniformly fluidized by coupling the gas flow with an externally imposed magnetic field. Interparticle forces generated by the magnetic field cause aggregation of the particles in chain-like structures preferentially oriented along the magnetic field lines. In the present paper, we study the implications of the formation of these special types of aggregates on the empirical Richardson-Zaki (RZ) equation, originally proposed to describe the expansion of fluidized beds of non-aggregated particles. We have addressed two important issues, namely the flow regime, which is a function of the size of the aggregates, and the effect of shape and orientation of the chain-like aggregates with respect to gas flow on fluid drag. We propose a modified RZ equation (MRZE) in which the velocity scale, given by the terminal settling velocity of the individual aggregates, and the RZ exponent are predetermined as a function of the chain length. The chain length depends on the ratio of the magnetic energy to gravitational energy, and is estimated from the magnetic field intensity, and particle magnetization, size and density. Predictions of the MRZE are successfully compared with published results in the literature on the expansion of magnetic particles in the presence of externally applied magnetic fields. 展开更多

Bed columns with inner diameters of 0.8, 1.45, and 2.3 mm were fabricated based on capillaries. Five parti- cle sizes in a range of 22-58 t^m were investigated. Bed-expansion curves were plotted using visually recorded bed-expansion heights. The bed expansion and initial fluidization behavior were compared with predictions for conventional-scale beds, Evident differences are reflected in lower expansion ratios and higher minimum fluidization velocities for micro-fluidized beds. These were attributed to the increase in the internal surface area of the particle beds and specific surface area of wall contact. The wall effect for micro-fluidized beds at higher particle/bed diameter ratios caused higher local voidage and an increase in expansion ratio. Correlations for the exponent and proportional coefficient in the Richardson-Zaki equation for micro-fluidized beds were proposed. The minimum fluidization velocities were correlated using a modification of the Ergun equation. 展开更多

The Richardson-Zaki scaling law, U/Ut = ε^n describes the field controlled bed expansion via the exponent n, that yields a porosity-dependent flow length scale dc = dpε^n. The paper addresses two issues: (i) deformation characteristics by assuming homogeneous bed expansion and a definition of bed variable flow length scale; (ii) dust filtration characteristics such as filter coefficient, specific deposit and filtration efficiency expressed in terms of the variable flow length scale and illustrated by experimental data. 展开更多

Acting as an operating mode of fluidization,the flow characteristics of a countercurrent liquid–solid fluidized bed(CCLSFB)were experimentally investigated using a Plexiglas column of 1.5 m in height.Countercurrent liquid-upward and solid-downward fluidization was achieved under a limited solid flowrate before flooding occurred.The“flooding”phenomena and the flooding velocity were identified by measuring the variations in pressure drop in the axial direction of the column.Two different methods were used to quantify the flooding point that led to the instability of the system.Axial solids holdup profiles were also obtained from the pressure drop data along the column and the influences of device structure and operating conditions on the solids holdup were also studied.Seven types of particles with different diameters and densities were used.An agreement was found between the experimental results and the mathematic prediction derived from the Richardson–Zaki equation on the data of the solids holdup. 展开更多
