In order to reduce the traffic pressure of urban arterial road with the rational utilization of the branch road,the vehicle meeting behavior on the branch road without divided lane was described,and the cellular automation (CA) model was put forward by introducing meeting behavior to reflect the relation between safe meeting speed and road width.The numerical simulation results depict several relation curves between road section capacity,speed and road width under different directional distributions of traffic flow,as well as the curves between the major and minor direction saturation flow,speed and road width.These relation characteristics indicate that except the one-way road section capacity and speed remaining unchanged,other road section capacities and speeds under different directional distributions increase with the increase of road width.On narrow road,the two-way traffic capacity and speed are less than those of one-way traffic;on wide road,the two-way traffic capacity doubles that of one-way traffic,but their speeds are almost the same.As the directional distribution moves to an even distribution of 50/50,the major direction saturation flows and speeds as well as the minor direction speeds tend to decease,while the minor direction saturation flow tends to increase. 展开更多

In the process of urban development in China,the vast majority of urban construction is faced with the prominent contradiction between scarce land resources and vigorous construction demand.Moreover,high-density and high-intensity development is ubiquitous.However,the overall development amount of a city is restricted by the bearing capacity of road network to some extent,and there is an upper limit.Based on this,Xingtang County of Shijiazhuang City is taken as the research object,and bearing capacity of road network is selected as research emphasis.With the aid of traffi c planning software TransCAD,simulation and quantitative analysis are conducted,and traffi c demand is forecasted,to analyze impact relationship between land-use planning and traffic planning in regulatory planning.It facilitates later modifi cation and optimization of volume rate in the land development intensity index,thus providing rational basis for programme adjustment,preparation and management of regulatory planning in Xingtang County. 展开更多

Combined Effect of Bus Stop and Access on Expressway Capacity

To determinate the combined effect of bus bay stops near access points on the expressway capacity,a new theoretical approach is developed on the basis of gap acceptance theory and queuing theory. According to the location between the bus stop and the access upstream or downstream,the capacity models on the expressway are developed for four cases. The results show that there are no significant differences in the capacity among four cases when the bus arrival rate is less than 60 veh / h and the car volume at the entrance and exit is less than 200 pcu / h. As the bus arrival rate and the car volume at the entrance and exit increase,the bus stops at downstream of an entrance and upstream of an exit have remarkable effect on the capacity. The increasing of berth number of the bus stop has a positive effect on the capacities of four cases. 展开更多

To determine how bus stop design influences mixed traffic operation near Chinese bus stops,a new theoretical method was developed by using additive-conflict-flows procedure.The procedure was extended from homogeneous traffic flow to mixed traffic flow.Based on the procedure and queuing theory,car capacity and speed models were proposed for three types of bus stops including curbside,bus bay and bicycle detour.The effects of various combinations of bus stop type,traffic volume,bus dwell time,and berth number on traffic operations were investigated.The results indicate that traffic volume,bus dwell time and berth number have negative effects on traffic operations for any type of bus stops.For different types of bus stops,at car volumes above approximately 200 vehicles per hour,the bus bay and bicycle detour designs provide more benefits than the curbside design.As traffic volume increases,the benefit firstly increases in uncongested conditions and then decreases in congested conditions.It reaches the maximum at car volumes nearly 1 100 vehicles per hour.The results can be used to aid in the selection of a preferred bus stop design for a given traffic volume in developing countries. 展开更多

This paper discusses the development and implementation of an evacuation demand forecasting module that was incorporated into a comprehensive decision support system for the planning and management of contraflow operations in the Gulf of Mexico. Contraflow implies the reversing of one direction of a highway in order to permit a substantially increased travel demand exiting away from an area impacted by a natural disaster or any other type of catastrophic event. Correctly estimating the evacuation demand originated from such a catastrophic event is critical to a successful contraflow implementation. One problem faced by transportation officials is the arranging of the different stages of this complex traffic procedure. Both the prompt deployment of resources and personnel as well as the duration of the actual contraflow affect the overall effectiveness, safety and cost of the evacuation event. During this project, researchers from the University of Alabama developed an integral decision support system for contraflow evacuation planning to assist the Alabama Department of Transportation Maintenance Bureau in the evaluation and planning of contraflow operations oriented to mitigate the evacuation burdens of a hurricane event. This paper focuses on the design of the demand forecasting module of such a decision support system. 展开更多

To determinate car capacity at bus stops with mixed traffic, a new theoretical approach was developed on the basis of additive-conflict-flows procedure. The procedure was extended from homogeneous traffic flow to mixed traffic flow. The conflicts among cars, buses and bicycles near the stop can be described by the extended procedure. The procedure can be understood more easily than the theory of gap acceptance. Car capacity near the stop is the function of both bus stream and bicycle stream. The proposed model can also analyze the cases of pedestrian effects and limited priority of bicyclists. Numerical results show that the car capacity decreases with the increasing flow rates of other streams. In addition, pedestrian effects and bicyclist's limited priority have negative effects on car capacity near bus stops with mixed traffic flow. 展开更多
