The influence of swelling time, temperature, NaCl concentration and polymer micro-gel concentration on rheological properties of polymer micro-gel dispersions was studied by using a HAAKE rheometer. The results showed that with increasing swelling time and NaCl concentration, the polymer micro-gel dispersions changed from a shear-thickening fluid to a Newtonian fluid. The polymer micro-gel dispersion show shear-thinning in non-saline water. At higher swelling temperature, the time of the polymer micro-gel dispersion showing shear-thickening was shorter. With increasing polymer micro-gel concentration, the dispersion changed from shear-thickening to shear-thinning. 展开更多

This article aims to numerically investigate the flow pattern for Newtonian and power law non-Newtonian fluid in a semi-half circular channel with corrugated walls under the influence of a magnetic field. The results indicate that, presence of a magnetic field affects the flow field in several aspects, especially in the vortex creation and dissipation. In addition, the analysis is carried out for different Reynolds numbers to ascertain the influence of magnetic field on each flow regime. Eventually, the analysis is carried out for a range of power indices including pseudo plastic (shear-thinning) to dilatants (shear-thickening) fluids. The results show that by increasing the power-index, the vortices begin to form and grow gradually so that in the shear-thickening fluid an extra vortex is formed and created nearby the corrugated part of the channel. 展开更多

Rheological experiments under steady and oscillatory shear were conducted for fumed silica suspen- sions in polyethylene glycol. Under steady shear the shear-thinning and thickening response were exhibited and the flow exponent N was determined. With the increase of concentration the flow exponent N showed a rapid increase, and it increased dramatically when the discontinuous shear-thickening took place. Oscillatory shear experiments were conducted at constant frequency and constant amplitude strain, respectively. The shear-thinning and the discontinuous shear-thickening behavior were observed under different constant frequencies from 10 to 80 rad/s. The correlation between complex modulus (G*) and sweep frequency (ω) was illuminated at γ =750%. It was found that the correlation between G* and ω could be fitted by equation: G*∝ωn. The indexes in shear-thinning region and shear-thickening were determined. The indexes were similar to some extent at shear-thinning region and increased dramati- cally to a much higher value when the shear-thickening occurred, especially at higher weight fractions. The behaviors can be qualitatively explained as follows: the shear-thinning owes to decrease of viscos- ity, which results from disruption of the aggregates; the cluster theory attributes the shear-thickening to the formation of metastable, flow induced clusters, which block the system. 展开更多

In this paper, the power-law fluid flows in a two-dimensional square cavity are investigated in detail with multi-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann method(MRTLBM).The influence of the Reynolds number(Re)and the power-law index(n)on the vortex strength, vortex position and velocity distribution are extensively studied. In our numerical simulations,Re is varied from 100 to 10000,and n is ranged from 0.25 to 1.75,covering both cases of shear-thinning and shear-thickening.Compared with the Newtonian fluid, numerical results show that the flow structure and number of vortex of power-law fluid are not only dependent on the Reynolds number, but also related to power-law index. 展开更多

The rheological properties of aqueous solutions of poly(methyl vinyl ether-co-maleic anhydride)(PMVE-MA)upon addition of metallic cations at different pH values were investigated.Sol-gel transition and shearthickening phenomena at moderate shear rate were observed upon increasing the amount of metallic cations, especially for cupric cation. At certain molar ratio(fgel)of added cupric cations to carboxyl groups in PMVE-MA,the system became gel-like,and the storage modulus(G′)and loss modulus(G′′)were parallel and exhibited a power-law dependence on the frequency, which is consistent with Winter’s hypothesis of determining the gel point of a crosslinking system. The shear-thickening behavior depends on fgel,pH,metallic valence, and temperature. 展开更多
