The standard FAO classification scheme provides a standardized system of classification that can be used to analyze spatial and temporal land cover variability in the study area. This approach also has the advantage of facilitating the integration of Sinai land cover mapping products to be included with the regional and global land cover datasets. The total study area is 7450 km2 (1,773,842) feddans. The landscape classification was performed on SPOT4 data acquired in 2011 using combined multi-spectral bands of 20 meter spatial resolution. Geographic Information System (GIS) was used to edit the classification result in order to reach the maximum possible accuracy. GIS was also used to include all necessary information. The identified vegetative land cover classes of the study area are irrigated herbaceous crops, irrigated tree crops and rain fed tree crops. The non-vegetated land covers in the study area include: bare rock, bare soil, bare soil stony, bare soil very stony, bare soil salt crusts, loose and shifting sands and sand dunes. The water bodies were classified as artificial perennial water bodies (fish ponds and irrigated canals) and natural perennial water bodies as lakes (standing) and rivers (flowing). Artificial surfaces in the study area include linear and non-linear. The produced maps and the statistics of the different land covers are included in the following sub-sections.展开更多

Spectral profile of diorite exhibits very distinguished absorption features around 2.20 μm and 2.35 μm wavelength regions. These absorption features lead to lowering the band ratio values within the band-7 wavelength region. Diorite intrusions appear to have grey and dark grey image signatures on 7/3 and 7/2 band ratio images respectively. On the false color composite ratio image (7/3:R;7/2:G and 5/2:B), diorite, marble, gossan and volcanics have very dark brown, dark blue, white and yellowish brown image signatures respectively. Image fusion between previously mentioned FCC ratio image and high spatial resolution (5 meters) SPOT-5 panchromatic image is carried out by using brovey and HSV transformation methods. Visual and statistical assessment methods prove that HSV fused image yields best image interpretability results rather than brovey image. It improves the spatial resolution of the original FCC ratios image with acceptable spectral preservation.展开更多

The electrical parameters (power supply voltage, welding current, SCR firing angle and current flow angle) of welding process can reflect the quality of joint and the status of welding equipment, many data acquisition devices designed to collect those parameters have been discussed in many papers, but there is such a deficiency that one computer can only link with an acquisition device. At automobile assembly field, there are hundreds of welding machines working at the same time, so the existing device can not be satisfied with manufacturing demand. To solve the problem, the double-MCU data acquisition device based on Ethernet is discussed in this paper, the data acquisition devices can altogether link with a computer using a HUB, the effective value or the instantaneous value of electrical parameters can be transmitted to the computer over UDP/IP. All the data are read through Ethernet port of a computer using a LabView application, which can process, store and present all data to the user. Finally the experiments prove that the designed Ethernet-based data acquisition system is suitable for practical application.展开更多

Receiver function analysis suggests the Moho is 24 km deep in the central part of the basin and deepens to 33 km to the east and 31 km to the west. The estimated lower crustal density is 2900 kg/m3, which suggests a gabbroic composition, whereas the upper crustal density, excluding basin sediments, is estimated to average 2690 kg/m3 or approximately a quartzofeldspathic composition. We modeled the magnetic sources as upper crustal to suggest a relatively shallow Curie depth in this region of high heat flow. We developed models to test the hypothesis that a low-density, non-magnetic body (magma or fluid-rich material?) within the lower crust at a depth of 15 km could coincide with the location of the Death Valley bright spot imaged on a deep seismic reflection profile. Those models suggest that if there is a low density region in the mid to lower crust in the area of the bright spot, then the region is also likely to be underplated by mafic or ultramafic materials which may have contributed to heating, uplift, and thinning of the crust during extension.展开更多
This paper assesses the changes in forest cover in Yok Don National Park of Vietnam between 2004 and 2010, and the implications of such changes on the biomass stocks of this national park. Remote sensing and GIS tools...This paper assesses the changes in forest cover in Yok Don National Park of Vietnam between 2004 and 2010, and the implications of such changes on the biomass stocks of this national park. Remote sensing and GIS tools along with the ground truth data collected from the field were employed for classifying the forest types of the study area from SPOT HRV satellite imagery for years 2004 and 2010. The total area considered in this study is 115.5 thousand ha. Five different categories of forests were identified. The results demonstrated that between 2004 and 2010, the Evergreen broad leaved rich quality forest decreased by 11.2 thousand ha (3.5 Mega tons of biomass) and the Dry open dipterocarps medium quality forest decreased by 15.3 thousand ha (2.5 Mega tons of biomass). In that time period, the Evergreen broad leaved medium quality forest increased by 3.2 thousand ha (0.8 Mega tons of biomass), the Evergreen broad leaved poor quality forest increased by 2.5 thousand ha (0.24 Mega tons of biomass), and the Dry open dipterocarps poor quality forest increased by 3.2 thousand ha (0.69 Mega tons of biomass). Total biomass of the study area decreased by 4.3 Mega tons.展开更多
Law enforcement agencies have begun utilizing traffic and crash data to improve traffic law enforcement delivery. However, many agencies often do not have the resources or expertise to harness fully the benefits this ...Law enforcement agencies have begun utilizing traffic and crash data to improve traffic law enforcement delivery. However, many agencies often do not have the resources or expertise to harness fully the benefits this data offers. A free to use, scalable traffic crash hot spot detection tool was developed to aid law enforcement agency decision makers, statewide to the local municipality level. The tool was developed to identify crash hot spots algorithmically with </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">a range of customizable parameters based on location, date and time, and</span><span style="font-family:Verdana;"> crash factors, enabling quick, dynamic queries. These capabilities provide the ability for law enforcement agencies to conduct “what if” analyses and make data-driven allocation decisions, placing officer resources where they are most needed. The two-step algorithm first identifies potential hot spots based on </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">crash density and then ranks each hot spot using a standardized z-score </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">measure of relative significance. To test the viability of the tool, a pilot was conducted identifying 27 hot spots across Wisconsin where targeted enforcement was then deployed. Despite officer skepticism, results from the pilot found officers at sites targeted for speeding and seatbelt violations were nearly twice as likely to initiate traffic stops compared to non-targeted hot spots. Empirical Bayes before-and-after crash analyses found fatal and injury crashes reduced significantly by nearly 11% during the months with targeted enforcement, while property damage crashes and total crashes were unchanged. Overall, the results show the algorithm can identify hotspots where, coupled with targeted enforcement, traffic safety improvements can be made.展开更多
