Voss(family Arecaceae) is the snake fruit commonly known in Malay language as salak in Malaysia. This exotic fruit has diverse and potential pharmacological properties due to its high antioxidant content. It is often consumed due to its sweet taste. The abundant natural sugar and fibre along with minerals and vitamin makes it a nutritious fruit. Phytochemical investigation on this fruit has revealed the presence of flavonoids, phenolics, glycosides as well as some volatile and aromatic compounds, including gallic acid, quercetin, chlorogenic acid, epicatechin, proanthocyanidins, lycopene and β-carotene. Pharmacological studies on the fruit flesh and peel have shown some tremendous antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer and antidiabetic potential. This review provides the botanical information of Salacca zalacca as well as its scientific investigations involving the distinct pharmacological and phytochemical benefits. This could help in highlighting the lacking data and research gaps on this plant.展开更多

Its sequence co...A male-specific SCAR DNA marker was developed using a RAPD DNA marker specific for male plants of Salacca zalacca var. zalacca (salak palm). The marker is 1579 bp long and has a GC content of 38.5 %. Its sequence contains 1 or 2 open reading frames, indicating the marker is probably a coding region. No highly similar sequences were found in a search of the GenBank database. Sexes were identified using the SCAR DNA marker for three kinds of seedlings grouped by the number of seeds per fruit (1, 2 or 3). The sex ratio of female to male did not differ significantly from 1:1 for the three kinds of seedlings, implying that the number of seeds per fruit is not a reliable index to identify the sex of a seedling.展开更多

The n...Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases with hyperglycemia characteristic that occurs because of abnormalities of insulin secretion. And it becomes one of the major degenerative diseases in the world. The number of studies is conducted to produce hypoglycemic compound and hipolipidemia as an alternative to chemical drugs. One of natural product is salacca vinegar. The purpose of this research is to determine the effect of Salacca vinegar var. Suwaru impact on the diabetic lipid profile of male rats that induced by STZ (Streptozotocin). This reseacrh is conducted by Experimental Post Test Randomized Control Design. Under this research, involves 4 groups, spesifically normal group, diabetic group, diabetic + salacca vinegar 0.4 cc, diabetic + salacca vinegar 0.7 cc. The data were analyzed by ANOVA (Analysis of Variance). The means were assessed for differences through Least Significant Difference (LSD) 0.05. The results showed that Salacca vinegar var. Suwaru with a dose of 0.4 cc/rat/day and 0.7 cc/rat/day influence on lipid profile levels of diabetic rats which affect on decreasing LDL, Trygliceride, total cholesterol and increasing HDL serum plasma diabetic rats.展开更多
