Oscar Fingal O ‘Flahertie Wills Wilde (1854 – 1900) is an Irish playwright, poet and author of numerousplays and one novel The Picture of Dorian Gray.Known for his biting wit,he became one of the most successfulplaywrights of the late Victorian era in London, and one of the greatest celebrities of his day.As a spokesmanfor aestheticism,he believes that beauty is the essence of art and life should imitate art.Salome is one of Wilde’s important plays,in which he fully practices his idea of aestheticism. Therefore, aestheticism is the key tounderstanding this one-act play. This thesis is made up of three parts:the first part briefly introduces theaesthetic movement; the second part focuses on Oscar Wilde and his aesthetic beliefs; the last part which isalso the most important one discusses the play Salome and its aesthetic values. 展开更多

Tian Han is well-known for writing realistic and revolutionary works in modem Chinese literature, but his early dramatic works are full of Western aesthetic decadence which values "art is for art's sake." He was strongly influenced by Oscar Wilde and his Salome, which can be found from his translating Salome to directing it performed on the Chinese stage, and to his own drama writing in 1920s. He did his best to balance art and life in his dramatic works in order to make them accepted by the masses in China. However, in 1930 he declared in his Self-criticism Directed at Ourselves that he would give up writing the aesthetic and decadent literary works and transfer to "art is for life's sake." The conflict between art and life through his works and theories demonstrates his complex about Salome. 展开更多

As the exponent of the aesthetic movement, Oscar Wilde has paidalmost excessive attention to the aestheticization of indoor spaces. For him, thehumanly-decorated house offers a sense of order and reason, which has, to a largeextent, assisted the formation of man’s ego and identity, while the outside world, filled with horror, confusion and anxiety, is always associated with the loss ofsubjectivity and individuality. His topophilia is well manifested in some of his morerenowned works, while its fullest expression can no doubt be found in The Decay ofLying, where he would complain in Vivian’s voice how “one becomes abstract andimpersonal” out of doors. In his one-act tragedy Salomé, however, the event whichwas traditionally believed to take place within Herod’s palace was deliberately setoutside the doors. To a certain degree, this arrangement has set the tone for the wholetragedy. Through the employment of the outdoor spaces and the deliberate confusionof the Inside with the Outside, Oscar Wilde has successfully created an atmosphere ofmadness, absurdity and horror that has haunted Salomé from the very beginning: theoutdoor spaces, in facilitating the identification of Salome with the image of Maenad, give the play a touch of madness; Salome’s deliberate attempts at confusing the Insidewith the Outside, principally motivated by the male gaze that permeates the indoorspaces and costs Salome her subjectivity, was plagued with futility and fruitlessness, from whence came the horror of homelessness that has consummated her tragedy. 展开更多

It has frequently been claimed that there is a lack of tragedy in the tradition of Chinese literature. The modern Chinese tragedy is very much the result of influence from the Western theatre. This essay examines Oscar Wilde’s tragedy Saloméas an example of the significant role that Western tragedy plays in the constructing of modern tragedy as an independent genre in China.Salomé,regarded as a tragedy in the Greek manner, with its inheritance of the tradition and elements of classical Greek tragedy in terms of setting, plot, morality, ending, and style, has enabled modern Chinese dramatists to establish connections with the tradition of Western tragedy. At the same time,Wilde’s rebellious protagonist has also given modern Chinese dramatists inspiration to retrieve femme fatales from traditional Chinese literature and transfigure them into the New Woman of the postMay Fourth era. With its iconoclastic spirit and aesthetic style,Saloméhas become a trope for Chinese modernity, which is linked closely with the anti-traditional consciousness and the drive to modernize Chinese theatre and literature for the building of a new China. Therefore,it is safe to say that the deep impact of Western tragedy on modern Chinese theatre would not have been possible without the mediation of Wilde’s Salomé,and that this is true especially for modern Chinese tragedy. 展开更多
