Understanding the extent to which forest communities recover after a long period of disturbance without direct intervention is important to provide context for considering ecosystem response to disturbance regimes. Species composition and structure were recorded on bottomland hardwood stands that were once inland and freshwater tidal rice fields. We sampled 17 old-field sites and 7 reference sites across three geomorphic settings. The old-field sites ranged from 30 to 120 years since agricultural abandonment. A total of 89 species were found across the old field sites and reference sample areas. Of that total, trees comprised 33 species, shrubs—5 species, and vine/herbs/forbs—51 species. Using field data, combined with stand inventory records, aerial photography (1936-2010), and high-resolution LiDAR imagery, we chronicled the evolution of the forest since the cessation of agriculture. Our findings demonstrate how Pinus taeda seeded directly after the rice fields went to fallow;and this conversion of bottomland swamp to rice to pine was a direct result of water management embankments constructed across the landscape to aid in crop irrigation. The remnant water management features may still alter flooding patterns thereby affecting development of Taxodium distichum and Nyssa aquatica in the old-fields. These results suggest, that over the 100+ years forest stands on the Santee Experimental Forest have developed to represent bottomland hardwoods characteristic of the southeastern United States coastal plain.展开更多

High resolution LiDAR data fo...Documenting the recovery of hydrologic functions following perturbations of a landscape/watershed is important to address issues associated with land use change and ecosystem restoration. High resolution LiDAR data for the USDAForestServiceSanteeExperimentalForestin coastalSouth Carolina,USAwas used to delineate the remnant historical water management structures within the watersheds supporting bottomland hardwood forests that are typical of the re- gion. Hydrologic functions were altered during the early1700’s agricultural use period for rice cultivation, with changes to detention storage, impoundments, and runoff routing. Since late1800’s, the land was left to revert to forests, without direct intervention. The resultant bottomlands, while typical in terms of vegetative structure and composition, still have altered hydrologic pathways and functions due to the historical land use. Furthermore, an accurate estimate of the watershed drainage area (DA) contributing to stream flow is critical for reliable estimates of peak flow rate, runoff depth and coefficient, as well as water and chemical balance. Peak flow rate, a parameter widely used in design of channels and cross drainage structures, is calculated as a function of the DA and other parameters. However, in contrast with the upland watersheds, currently available topographic maps and digital elevation models (DEMs) used to estimate the DA are not adequate for flat, low-gradient Coastal Plain (LCP) landscape. In this paper we explore a case study of a 3rd order watershed (equivalent to 14-digit hydrologic unit code (HUC)) at headwaters of east branch of Cooper River draining to Charleston Harbor, SC to assess the drainage area and corresponding mean annual runoff coefficient based on various DEMs including LiDAR data. These analyses demonstrate a need for application of LiDAR-based DEMs together with field verification to improve the basis for assessments of hydrology, watershed drainage characteristics, and modeling in the LCP.展开更多

As interleaved radar pulses become more complex and denser, intelligent classification of radar signals has become very important. The self-organizing feature map(SOFM) is an excellent artificial neural network, which has huge advantages in intelligent classification of complex data. However, the de-interleaving process based on SOFM is faced with the problems that the initialization of the map size relies on prior information and the network topology cannot be adaptively adjusted. In this paper, an SOFM with self-adaptive network topology(SANT-SOFM) algorithm is proposed to solve the above problems. The SANT-SOFM algorithm first proposes an adaptive proliferation algorithm to adjust the map size, so that the initialization of the map size is no longer dependent on prior information but is gradually adjusted with the input data. Then,structural optimization algorithms are proposed to gradually optimize the topology of the SOFM network in the iterative process,constructing an optimal SANT. Finally, the optimized SOFM network is used for de-interleaving radar signals. Simulation results show that SANT-SOFM could get excellent performance in complex EW environments and the probability of getting the optimal map size is over 95% in the absence of priori information.展开更多

In eukaryotes,histone acetylation is a major modification on histone N-terminal tails that is tightly connected to transcriptional activation.HDA6 is a histone deacetylase involved in the transcriptional regulation of...In eukaryotes,histone acetylation is a major modification on histone N-terminal tails that is tightly connected to transcriptional activation.HDA6 is a histone deacetylase involved in the transcriptional regulation of genes and transposable elements(TEs)in Arabidopsis thaliana.HDA6 has been shown to participate in several complexes in plants,including a conserved SIN3 complex.Here,we uncover a novel protein complex containing HDA6,several Harbinger transposon-derived proteins(HHP1,SANT1,SANT2,SANT3,and SANT4),and MBD domain-containing proteins(MBD1,MBD2,and MBD4).We show that mutations of all four SANT genes in the sant-null mutant cause increased expression of the flowering repressors FLC,MAF4,and MAF5,resulting in a late flowering phenotype.Transcriptome deep sequencing reveals that while the SANT proteins and HDA6 regulate the expression of largely overlapping sets of genes,TE silencing is unaffected in sant-null mutants.Our global histone H3 acetylation profiling shows that SANT proteins and HDA6 modulate gene expression through deacetylation.Collectively,our findings suggest that Harbinger transposon-derived SANT domain-containing proteins are required for histone deacetylation and flowering time control in plants.展开更多

文摘【目的】从澳洲坚果(Macadamia integrifolia)叶片中克隆MYB1转录因子基因(MiMYB1)并进行生物信息学分析,为揭示R2R3-MYB家族转录因子成员在澳洲坚果中的抗逆作用机制提供参考依据。【方法】利用PCR从澳洲坚果品种桂热一号叶片中克隆MiMYB1基因,采用ProtParam、TMHMM Server v.2.0和SMART:Main page等在线分析软件对MiMYB1蛋白进行生物信息学分析,运用DNAMAN 7.0进行蛋白氨基酸多序列比对分析,并从NCBI中选取126个拟南芥R2R3-MYB家族成员,以Geneious Pro v4.8.4中的邻接法(Neighbor-joining,NJ)构建系统发育进化树。【结果】从澳洲坚果品种桂热一号叶片中克隆获得的MiMYB1基因序列全长1205 bp,包含1062 bp的开放阅读框(ORF),共编码353个氨基酸,GenBank登录号为MN254975。MiMYB1蛋白具有2个SANT保守结构域,属于R2R3-MYB家族,是无跨膜结构、无信号肽且定位于细胞核的不稳定亲水性蛋白。MiMYB1氨基酸序列(MN254975)与荷花NnMYB39氨基酸序列(XP010277911.1)的亲缘关系最近,相似性为71.81%;与哥伦比亚锦葵HuMYB102-like(XP021293847.1)、榴莲DzMYB102-like(XP022777375.1)、木薯MeMYB102-like(XP021596793.1)和高山栎QsMYB102-like(XP023877052.1)的MYB氨基酸序列相似性分别为67.47%、68.63%、64.44%和67.28%。MiMYB1蛋白与126个拟南芥R2R3-MYB家族成员的系统发育进化分析结果显示,MiMYB1与AtMYB41的亲缘关系最近,与AtMYB41、AtMYB74和AtMYB102同属于S11亚族,具有相似的生物学功能,即与植物抗逆性功能相关。【结论】MiMYB1是典型的植物R2R3-MYB转录因子,在澳洲坚果的抗逆反应中发挥作用。
