A Study of Listening Teaching in High School English Class from the Perspective of Schema Theory

Listening comprehension is not only helpful for students’ learning ability, but also related to students’ scope of knowledge. According to the schema theory, listeners' knowledge plays an important role on the understanding of what they have listened. This paper aims to analyze the listening teaching in high school class under the schema theory.

Application of Schema Theory in Reading Teaching

Schema theory plays an important role in College English reading teaching.During the reading courses,teachers should try to activate the students' background knowledge and build up the rhetorical schema by using topic sentences and key words of a text,which can help the students get a better understanding of the text.

Insight of schema theory into interpretation practice

Schema is an important concept in cognitive psychology, referring to how different types of information are connected in our brain, and the process of activating stored information. In view of modern schema theory, this paper focuses on its application in the three stages of interpretation practice. Schema plays a role in preparation before interpretation, which includes enhancing the interpreter＇s linguistic competence, and enlarging his storage of background information; schema influences performance during interpretation in terms of comprehension and note-taking; summary after interpretation is to supplement original schema. Schema theory and its application in teaching listening for non-English major undergraduates

Both empirical research findings and teaching experiences show that most non-English major undergraduates who are poorly aware of the cognitive psychological aspect of listening usually pay far greater attention to their improvement of pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, etc. only in listening class. Cultural schema theory proposes that when we interact with members of the same culture in certain situations, or talk about certain information with them many times, cultural schemas are created and stored in our brain, which can promote coherence between the original and target language text, thus solving the cultural default caused by the cultural differences. It is vital to make cultural compensation to different cultural schemas and to coordinate the cultural contradiction. The Application of Schema Theory in the Teaching of English Reading in the Independent Colleges

Schema is interpreted as one's prior knowledge or background knowledge and schema theory is about a reader's utilizing his schema knowledge when reading so as to achieve efficient comprehension.Based on the analysis of the current situation of English reading instruction in the independent colleges and the literature review of schema theory,this paper mainly explores how schema theory is applied in the teaching steps of English reading in independent colleges,such as warming up,brainstorming,prediction,presentation of background knowledge,instruction of new words,skimming and scanning,reading the text and critical reading.In the end,the pedagogical implications are proposed.

THE PSYCHOLINGUISTIC SCHEMA THEORY AND ESL READING METHODOLOGY

Schema theory research has shown importance of background knowledge within a psycholinguistic model of reading. This paper gives an overview of schema theory as part of a reader-centered, psycholinguistic processing model of EFL/ESL reading, in which we discuss how reading comprehension involves background knowledge that goes far beyond linguistic knowledge. The process of interpretation is realized by the employment of two basic modes of information processing, bottom-up and top-down processing. Then, a variety of techniques and classroom activities are suggested for accommodating this phenomenon in a reader-centered EFL/ESL reading program.

SCHEMA THEORY OF TRANSFER AND ENGLISH TEACHING

This paper tries to illustrate the pragmatic sense of schema theory in English teaching from the perspective of cognitive psychology. The process of knowledge acquisition is an assimilative process, in which the logic sense of the material in the form of words or any other symbolic representation interact with the notions in students' cognitive structure and hence produce individual psychological sense. This paper also observes teaching of English reading from the following six dimensions of the three perspectives of micro-proposition, synthetic-proposition and macro-proposition:1.degree of similarity of basic category words; 2. ambiguity of words and sentences; 3. ambiguity of the 'signifying' and the 'signified'; 4. the distance between the 'signifying' and the 'signified'; 5. the regressive search of cognition; 6. the unification of the 'part' and the 'whole'. The paper probes into the factors that influence students' cognitive process and the practice of schema theory in teaching.

The Viewpoint of Categorization Theory on the Nature of Reading Comprehension

This paper is intended to reveal the likelihood that conceptual categorization can be used to understand a text by reconstructing the semantic categories through which the author＇s meaning is conveyed, and proposes an alternative way to look into reading comprehension. It is proposed that categorization can be taken as an alternative approach to second/foreign language reading instruction. That is, while reading comprehension is defined in terms of the ability to recognize the inclusion and membership properties of contextually determined semantic categories in a text, the learner needs to arrange the events, actions, or concepts into a structured unit, both horizontally and vertically. Categorization theory will be introduced in relation to Rosch famous studies （1973, 1975）, examples taken from a graded reader will be illustrated as how to identify items with category structure, and finally issues that are not addressed in this paper will be discussed.

The Application of the Psychological Linguistics Theory in College English Reading Teaching

The training of reading skill is the focal point of college English teaching. Psychological linguistics provides a new point of view for college English teaching. From the aspect of psychological linguistics theory this paper discusses some issues, including how to train students to complete the reading process independently, how to build the schema to achieve integrated discourse comprehension, how to choose the most appropriate reading model, in order to improve the English reading skill and provide some enlightenment for college English reading teaching.

A Research of Psycholinguistic Theory as a Tool for Vocabulary Memorization

This paper begins with an analysis of the difficulties and problems in teaching listening to EFL students. To deal with these issues, it outlines three teaching procedures and describes the unique features and tasks in each stage of teaching. Teachers should be able to identify what technical and procedural issues are involved in their teaching. The authors point out that listening should be task-oriented and accompanied with effective means of evaluation. The paper ends with a discussion of the part of the role-playing and the interactive activities in the listening process and the student engagement.

Perspectives for Teaching Reading in a College English Classroom

English, has not only become the international language as it is spoken by a large number of native speakers of other languages and serves as a language of wider communication but also achieved a genuinely global status owing to its special role recognized in every country. Under such circumstances, greater importance has been attached to English teaching of which reading has been given some privileges at the tertiary level in China. Hence, it is very essential for language teachers to have a good understanding about how to teach reading in a college English classroom. This article discusses what reading is, the important issues in teaching reading, and gives some proposals for how to teach reading efficiently in a college English classroom, aiming to give an idea that reading can be learnt effectively if students are motivated, exposed to English language and given chances to use English.

Discussion on the Teaching of English Listening under the Background of Latest CET- 4 Reform

This research made a comprehensive comparison on the listening test of the new CET-4 with the old one. Besides, by applying the schema theory, it also provides a series of new teaching methods which can be used to improve the quality of the college English listening courses' teaching and help students solve the problem in the news report section of the new CET-4.
