P values based on standard hypothesis testing are commonly reported in articles published by the Journal of Forestry Research(JFR).However, effect sizes are barely used and reported, even if they are of direct relevance to the primary questions of many of the published studies. The incorporation of effect sizes in studies published by JFR should be encouraged and promoted.Inclusion of effect sizes as a requirement in the journal guidelines will facilitate a major change in the way data are tested and interpreted, with the ultimate goal to exempt researchers from the custom of drawing conclusions merely based upon a dichotomous statistical result(P value).Such a policy can also lead to more informed decisions of whether identified effects are of practical relevance to the forestry. 展开更多

Communication plays an important role in advancing scientific fields and disciplines, defining what knowledge is made accessible to the public, and guiding policymaking and regulation of public authorities for the benefit of the environment and society.Hence, what is finally published is of great importance for scientific advancement, social development, environmental and public health, and economic agendas. In recognition of these, the goal of a researcher is to communicate research findings to the scientific community and ultimately,to the public. However, this may often be challenging due to competition for publication space, although to a lesser extent nowadays that online-only publications have expanded. This editorial introduces six statistics-related issues in scientific writing that you should be aware of.These issues can lead to desk rejection or rejection following a peer review, but even if papers containing such issues are published, they may prevent cumulative science, undermine scientific advancement, mislead the public, and result in incorrect or weak policies and regulations. Therefore, addressing these issues from the early research stages can facilitate scientific advancement and prevent rejection of your paper. 展开更多

The term Ecology is derived from ο&#7990&#954ο&#962 (Greek “house” or environment), but our habitations usually overlooked in ecology or environmental studies. The expression “at home” usually means safety and comfort, but at home we are under risk of innumerous parasitic/microbial infections and contaminations/</span><span style="font-family:""> </span><span style="font-family:""><span style="font-family:Verdana;">envenomation. During the COVID-19 pandemic we were forced to stay at home, but the virus and other pathogens were also home-delivered. Education for health is highly effective in health promotion, particularly in </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">poor areas. Thus, prophylactic interventions approaching household environment are required. The present activity aims community</span><span style="font-family:Verdana;"> empowerment and engagement in controlling parasitic diseases and other infections such as Chagas disease, leishmaniasis, malaria, arboviruses etc. Inspired on the use of a house maket by Dr. Virgínia Schall to demonstrate <i></span><i><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Aedes</span></i><span style="font-family:Verdana;"></i></span><span style="font-family:Verdana;"> mosquitoes breeding sites. We also employ house makets displaying pathogen vectors breeding/hiding sites. Although some makets can be opened, revealing intradomiciliary milieu, we intended to offer the public a literally “insider” view of this largely overlooked scenery. The “Interactive House”, also known as “</span></span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">House with no viruses and other bugs</span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">” is an educative, interactive, ludic device elaborated on an inflatable igloo, with furniture and utensils crafted using reused/recycled or low-cost materials. Live mosquito larvae were placed at peridomicile in water-accumulating plant pot saucer, leaves-clogged gutter, used tire, dog water bowl as well as within the domicile, in the shower drain trap. Evidengue&reg, crafted in cloth to block mosquito oviposition developed is presented. Participants enjoy taking part in the activity, seem amused, play, laugh and smile while enthusiastically take pictures. This educative activity permits health communication in a ludic interactive way, which may contribute to health promotion in areas with public health problems. 展开更多

A [1] common lament in the realm of science and technology culture (SL and PCST [2]) is the scant regard for publicizing science and technology.Similarly decried is the chronic lack of knowledge of science and technology by a high proportion of the general public, who are said to be de facto deprived of the right to speak on issues concerning them since they cannot grasp the real impact on society of the spinoffs from science and technology development. PCST actors reiterate that the real challenge is to maintain our individual and collective capacity for intervention in a knowledge society that is ever more complex to decipher and master.…… 展开更多

The external communication of museums is an important force to serve "Chinese culture going out", and Zhang Daqian is arepresentative cultural card in contemporary Chinese painting and calligraphy circles. The present situation of the translation of hisexhibits objectively reflects the overall situation of the relevant contents of local museums in China. In this paper, the publicitytranslation of Zhang Daqian's exhibits in the digital museum was selected as the research object;from the perspective ofcommunication, the principles that should be followed in the translation of exhibits were discussed;the existing translationproblems were pointed out;and the corresponding solutions were put forward. This paper aims to promote the positive role ofdigital museums in the dissemination of Chinese culture to the outside world. 展开更多

With the rapid rise of new media platforms such as Weibo and Tiktok, communities with science communication characteristics have progressively grown on social networks. These communities pursue essential objectives such as increased visibility and influence. For the success of the public understanding of science in China, case studies of science communication communities on social media are becoming increasingly valuable as a point of reference. The authenticity of user influence plays an important role in the analysis of the final outcome during the process of community detection.By integrating counterfactual reasoning theory into a community detection algorithm,we present a novel paradigm for eliminating influence bias in online communities. We consider the community of Public Science Day of the Chinese Academy of Sciences as a case study to demonstrate the validity of the proposed paradigm. In addition,we examine data on science communication activities, analyze the key elements of activity communication, and provide references for not only augmenting the communication impact of similar types of popular science activities but also advancing science communication in China. Our main finding is that the propagation channel for the science communication experiment exhibits multi-point scattered propagation and lacks a continuous chain in the process of propagation. 展开更多

Welcome to the journal of Burns & Trauma launched in 2013 and published by the prestigious Wolters Kluwer Health. We are grateful to promote a cultural challenge toward a new horizon in the field of translational research (TR). We enjoy to work together with the common objective to perform continuous medical education programs, exploring the methods in research, designing study, and to improve multidisciplinary and multiprofessional collaboration in the basic sciences and in the clinical trials. Defined narrowly, epistemology is the study of knowledge and justified belief. Epistemology is concerned with the following questions: What are the necessary and sufficient conditions of knowledge? What are its sources? What is its structure and what are its limits? More broadly, epistemology is about issues having to do with the creation and dissemination of knowledge in particular areas of inquiry as defined and revisiting at the beginning of the last decades. Translational medicine (TM) should meet the demands to maintain or expanding the biomedical workforce and education programs that attract and retain young people in the translational and biomedical sciences. With this present contributes, we invite the members of the editorial board of Burns & Trauma to encourage submitting, in a special section, their personal experience about the philosophy of "Translation research." If this has a chance, welcome to the researchers, clinicians, and the allied people for their decisive contributions to strengthen the importance of a common way about the principles and methods of basic and clinical research. TR and TM represent a dynamic entity making a link, a sort of bridge, "from bench to bedside", or from laboratory experiments through clinical trials to point-of-care patient applications. Epistemological pluralism is a critical point for conducting innovative, collaborative research which can lead to more successful integrated and successfully study, particularly important in the field of burns and trauma. 展开更多

River profile analysis has been used extensively in the earth sciences. Commonly, exploration of river profiles requires downloading and processing Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) for specific areas, which limits the scope of exploratory analysis. Presented here is a web application designed to analyze river profiles at 90m resolution at a near-global scale. The app allows users to quickly query downstream or upstream from selected points anywhere within ±60 degrees latitude,in order to interactively analyze corresponding river profiles. River profile analysis can be performed in both distance and χ space, where χ is a metric that is proportional to the presumed steady-state shape of the river profile. River locations are based on the HydroSHEDS 90m drainage direction grid,as well as custom computed D8 drainage direction and void-filled SRTM DEMs. RiverProfileApp is open source, and although currently it is designed as an exploratory tool, more functions can be easily added via community contributions and/or from existing toolsets. It is available from RiverProfileApp.github.io. 展开更多
