A brief summary is offered of some particular posture of scientific journalism from within new media. With the above background, four priorities for future science communication in context of new media are introduced: (1) a brief description about the actual status of science communication within the new media and mass communication process in general; (2) a solid theoretical and conceptual frame for scientific journalism within new media context; (3) a description of some possible forms of public for scientific journalism; (4) a brief analysis upon the possible set of negative effects of scientific journalism in new media and globalization context, and a need for a larger perspective in any attempt to understand the phenomenon of science communication within new media and mass communication processes. 展开更多

The study in this paper that draws on dialogic interaction is a focus of investigation as the way to communicate social sciences to the public. In science communication people, for example, experts or scientists attempt to persuade lay people about the validity of their assessments. Currently dialogue in science communication might be seen as an important way to deliver information about sciences to the public as previously communicating science was conducted through top-down approaches. In addition, currently there is a tendency that people prefer to deliver and to receive information about sciences through two-way communication models between two or more parties, face-to-face or mediated by any means of communication as this way of communication is seen as more interactive. In the context of Indonesia, in terms of social science communication, this is an important phenomenon to investigate as two-way communication models might bridge the gap between expert opinion and lay opinion, where lay opinion is often seen as irrational or emotional. However, there are still a small number of studies with regard to how social sciences are communicated to the public and in what ways people preferred to deliver, moreover to discuss information within social sciences. One of the potential reasons is that research on science communication is mainly focused on natural and physical sciences. Since the study in this paper focuses on dialogic interactions in social science communication, this study will contribute to the current discussions of mass communication, in terms of science communication, and to related fields. 展开更多

The Polar Regions play an important role in the global processes of our planet, from climate change to sea level rise, protection from UV (ultraviolet) radiation to uptake of carbon dioxide. In addition, their scientific importance, extraordinary beauty and adventurous history provide perfect ingredients for both education and public outreach.Polar examples provide an excellent way to transmit basic concepts about a wide range of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) disciplines. The IPY (International Polar Year) brought educators and scientists together and provided the incentive for the formation of the PEI (Polar Educators International), an organization encouraging the exchange of ideas between educators and researchers and enhancement of the profile of polar education on the international scene. Educators must be adequately informed about current scientific polar research and have the confidenceto teach it to students. Scientists have the knowledge and data to explain these complexities, but may lack the communication skills to make the subject accessible to non-technical audiences. The development of this new network between polar educators and scientists has the potential to break down walls that restrict international collaboration and understanding, provide educators with topical and reliable information and share best practices internationally in an effective way. 展开更多

Charles Darwin discovers that the theory of the species' creation by a miraculous being has reached a double impasse, due to the science "speech" evolution. There is an expositive impasse (it can't explain some facts any more) and a communication-comprehensive impasse (within its limits, some facts are not communicable or understandable). In order to endorse his theory of evolutionism, Darwin develops an argumentative communicating science based on two axes: the facts and the axiomatics. His communicating science follows the next structure: (1) a relation with the starting thesis is established; (2) some evidence are promoted; (3) as the base of the evidence, a motivation is emphasized; (4) as a reason, an axiomatics is assigned to this base; and (5) finally, the facts and the quantifiers are explained by valid conclusions. 展开更多

P values based on standard hypothesis testing are commonly reported in articles published by the Journal of Forestry Research(JFR).However, effect sizes are barely used and reported, even if they are of direct relevance to the primary questions of many of the published studies. The incorporation of effect sizes in studies published by JFR should be encouraged and promoted.Inclusion of effect sizes as a requirement in the journal guidelines will facilitate a major change in the way data are tested and interpreted, with the ultimate goal to exempt researchers from the custom of drawing conclusions merely based upon a dichotomous statistical result(P value).Such a policy can also lead to more informed decisions of whether identified effects are of practical relevance to the forestry. 展开更多

Communication plays an important role in advancing scientific fields and disciplines, defining what knowledge is made accessible to the public, and guiding policymaking and regulation of public authorities for the benefit of the environment and society.Hence, what is finally published is of great importance for scientific advancement, social development, environmental and public health, and economic agendas. In recognition of these, the goal of a researcher is to communicate research findings to the scientific community and ultimately,to the public. However, this may often be challenging due to competition for publication space, although to a lesser extent nowadays that online-only publications have expanded. This editorial introduces six statistics-related issues in scientific writing that you should be aware of.These issues can lead to desk rejection or rejection following a peer review, but even if papers containing such issues are published, they may prevent cumulative science, undermine scientific advancement, mislead the public, and result in incorrect or weak policies and regulations. Therefore, addressing these issues from the early research stages can facilitate scientific advancement and prevent rejection of your paper. 展开更多

With the rapid rise of new media platforms such as Weibo and Tiktok, communities with science communication characteristics have progressively grown on social networks. These communities pursue essential objectives such as increased visibility and influence. For the success of the public understanding of science in China, case studies of science communication communities on social media are becoming increasingly valuable as a point of reference. The authenticity of user influence plays an important role in the analysis of the final outcome during the process of community detection.By integrating counterfactual reasoning theory into a community detection algorithm,we present a novel paradigm for eliminating influence bias in online communities. We consider the community of Public Science Day of the Chinese Academy of Sciences as a case study to demonstrate the validity of the proposed paradigm. In addition,we examine data on science communication activities, analyze the key elements of activity communication, and provide references for not only augmenting the communication impact of similar types of popular science activities but also advancing science communication in China. Our main finding is that the propagation channel for the science communication experiment exhibits multi-point scattered propagation and lacks a continuous chain in the process of propagation. 展开更多

A [1] common lament in the realm of science and technology culture (SL and PCST [2]) is the scant regard for publicizing science and technology.Similarly decried is the chronic lack of knowledge of science and technology by a high proportion of the general public, who are said to be de facto deprived of the right to speak on issues concerning them since they cannot grasp the real impact on society of the spinoffs from science and technology development. PCST actors reiterate that the real challenge is to maintain our individual and collective capacity for intervention in a knowledge society that is ever more complex to decipher and master.…… 展开更多

Welcome to the journal of Burns & Trauma launched in 2013 and published by the prestigious Wolters Kluwer Health. We are grateful to promote a cultural challenge toward a new horizon in the field of translational research (TR). We enjoy to work together with the common objective to perform continuous medical education programs, exploring the methods in research, designing study, and to improve multidisciplinary and multiprofessional collaboration in the basic sciences and in the clinical trials. Defined narrowly, epistemology is the study of knowledge and justified belief. Epistemology is concerned with the following questions: What are the necessary and sufficient conditions of knowledge? What are its sources? What is its structure and what are its limits? More broadly, epistemology is about issues having to do with the creation and dissemination of knowledge in particular areas of inquiry as defined and revisiting at the beginning of the last decades. Translational medicine (TM) should meet the demands to maintain or expanding the biomedical workforce and education programs that attract and retain young people in the translational and biomedical sciences. With this present contributes, we invite the members of the editorial board of Burns & Trauma to encourage submitting, in a special section, their personal experience about the philosophy of "Translation research." If this has a chance, welcome to the researchers, clinicians, and the allied people for their decisive contributions to strengthen the importance of a common way about the principles and methods of basic and clinical research. TR and TM represent a dynamic entity making a link, a sort of bridge, "from bench to bedside", or from laboratory experiments through clinical trials to point-of-care patient applications. Epistemological pluralism is a critical point for conducting innovative, collaborative research which can lead to more successful integrated and successfully study, particularly important in the field of burns and trauma. 展开更多

River profile analysis has been used extensively in the earth sciences. Commonly, exploration of river profiles requires downloading and processing Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) for specific areas, which limits the scope of exploratory analysis. Presented here is a web application designed to analyze river profiles at 90m resolution at a near-global scale. The app allows users to quickly query downstream or upstream from selected points anywhere within ±60 degrees latitude,in order to interactively analyze corresponding river profiles. River profile analysis can be performed in both distance and χ space, where χ is a metric that is proportional to the presumed steady-state shape of the river profile. River locations are based on the HydroSHEDS 90m drainage direction grid,as well as custom computed D8 drainage direction and void-filled SRTM DEMs. RiverProfileApp is open source, and although currently it is designed as an exploratory tool, more functions can be easily added via community contributions and/or from existing toolsets. It is available from RiverProfileApp.github.io. 展开更多
