CIIS President Meets with UN Secretary-General António Guterres

On June 28,CIIS President Xu Bu met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in New York and exchanged views on the work and reports of the High-level Advisory Board on Effective Multilateralism(HLAB),established in March 2022.The Advisory Board comprises 12 members from 12 different countries,including CIIS President Xu Bu,with two co-chairs,former president of Liberia Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and former Prime Minister of Sweden Stefan Löfven.UN Secretary-General Guterres expressed gratitude for Xu’s contributions to the HLAB report titled“A Breakthrough for People and Planet:Effective and Inclusive Global Governance for Today and the Future,”saying that the report generates heated discussions and wide-ranging impacts.

WORLD STANDARDS DAY 2024 celebrated in Xi’an

The theme activity of the World Standards Day 2024 in China was held in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, on October 14. Zhang Xiaogang, former ISO President, read the congratulatory message from IEC, ISO, and ITU for this year's World Standards Day(WSD), the theme of which is “Shared vision for a better world”. Sergio Mujica, ISO Secretary-General, and Jo Cops, IEC President, addressed the event via videos.

China and Sri Lanka sign a MoU on standardization

Host-targeting-motif Harbored Secretary Proteins in Genome of Plant Pathogenic Fungus Botrytis cinerea

According to our previous study, saprophytic fungi Botrytis cinerea contained 579 predicted secretary proteins. Among them, we found that 122 of these proteins contained the highly conserved pathogenic-related host-targeting-motif RxLx within 100 residues adjacent to the signal peptide cleavage site. According to PEDNAT and COG of the GenBank database, the functions of this motif containing proteins included metabolism modification and cell secretion. We blasted them in GenBank and found 47.54% had highly conserved homologues in other species, among them 74.1% had putative functional domains. This suggests these proteins are presumably ancient and vertically transmitted within the species. Many of these domains belonged to proteins which played roles in the pathogenic process of other kinds of pathogens and some had already been proved to be pathogenic secretary proteins of Botrytis cinerea. So we postulated that proteins contained host-targeting-motif RxLx were candidates participating in the pathogenesis of Botrytis cinerea.

A SECRETARY PROBLEM ON FUZZY SETS

This paper deals with a secretary problem on fuzzy sets, which allows both the recall of applicants and the uncertainty of a current applicant receiving an offer of employmellt. A new decision criterion is given to select a satisfactory applicant. This result extends the works of M.C.K. Yang and M.H. Smith.

On September 28,CIIS Secretary-General Yang Yi attended and gave remarks at a highlevel international online conference themed“SCO Participation in Regional Governance:New Concepts,New Platforms.”The videoconference,co-sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences(CASS)and the Russian International Affairs Council(RIAC),was addressed by CASS President Xie Fuzhan,Chinese Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui,RIAC President Igor Ivanov,Russian Ambassador to China Andrey Denisov,and SCO Secretary-General Vladimir Norov.

Contention over the Post of UN Secretary General

United Nations Secretary General Kofi A. Annan is going to complete his second term of office by December 31 this year. Although the day is some time away, competition for the position of the next secretary general has unfolded within and outside the United Nations. Given the importance of the post which has a bearing on the orientation and future development of the organization, and due to the different approaches and policies taken by the parties concerned, there is bound to be a sharp contention among the various parties.
