Peak ground acceleration(PGA) estimation is an important task in earthquake engineering practice. One of the most well-known models is the Boore-Joyner-Fumal formula, which estimates the PGA using the moment magnitude, the site-to-fault distance and the site foundation properties. In the present study, the complexity for this formula and the homogeneity assumption for the prediction-error variance are investigated and an effi ciency-robustness balanced formula is proposed. For this purpose,a reduced-order Monte Carlo simulation algorithm for Bayesian model class selection is presented to obtain the most suitable predictive formula and prediction-error model for the seismic attenuation relationship. In this approach, each model class(a predictive formula with a prediction-error model) is evaluated according to its plausibility given the data. The one with the highest plausibility is robust since it possesses the optimal balance between the data fi tting capability and the sensitivity to noise.A database of strong ground motion records in the Tangshan region of China is obtained from the China Earthquake Data Center for the analysis. The optimal predictive formula is proposed based on this database. It is shown that the proposed formula with heterogeneous prediction-error variance is much simpler than the attenuation model suggested by Boore,Joyner and Fumal(1993). 展开更多

Because of the viscoelasticity of the subsurface medium, seismic waves will inherently attenuate during propagation, which lowers the resolution of the acquired seismic records.Inverse-Q filtering,as a typical approach to compensating for seismic attenuation, can efficiently recover high-resolution seismic data from attenuation.Whereas most efforts are focused on compensating for highfrequency energy and improving the stability of amplitude compensation by inverse-Q filtering,low-frequency leakage may occur as the high-frequency component is boosted. In this article,we propose a compensation scheme that promotes the preservation of lowfrequency energy in the seismic data.We constructed an adaptive shaping operator based on spectral-shaping regularization by tailoring the frequency spectra of the seismic data.We then performed inverse-Q filtering in an inversion scheme. This data-driven shaping operator can regularize and balance the spectral-energy distribution for the compensated records and can maintain the low-frequency ratio by constraining the overcompensation for high-frequency energy.Synthetic tests and applications on prestack common-reflectionpoint gathers indicated that the proposed method can preserve the relative energy of low-frequency components while fulfilling stable high-frequency compensation. 展开更多

Gas hydrates gained a remarkable attention as an unconventional energy resource recently. In order to interpret gas hydrates (part of fluid) and free gas saturated zone accurately, it is essential to implement new technique related to seismic attenuation and velocity dispersion. P wave attenuation and velocity dispersion in porous media made promising imprints for exploration of gas hydrates. The most prominent phenomenon for attenuation and velocity dispersion in porous media is wave induced fluid flow in which wave inhomogeneities are larger than pore size but smaller than wavelength. Numerical simulation technique is applied to analyze frequency dependent velocity dispersion and attenuation in gas hydrates and free gas layer in Makran offshore of Pakistan. Homogeneous and patchy distribution patterns of gas hydrates and free gas within pore spaces of host sediments at lower and higher frequency regime are considered. It is noted that the attenuation and velocity dispersion increase with the increase in gas hydrates saturation. The maximum attenuation is observed at 66% saturation of gas hydrates in the area under investigation. However, in case of water and gas mixture the maximum attenuation and velocity dispersion occur at low gas saturation (~15%). Therefore, based on our numerical simulation, velocity dispersion and attenuation can be used as seismic attributes to differentiate various gas saturations and gas hydrates saturation for Makran offshore area of Pakistan. 展开更多

Intrinsic attenuation of the earth causes energy loss and phase distortion in seismic wave propagation. To obtain high-resolution imaging results, these negative effects must be considered during reverse time migration(RTM).We can easily implement attenuation-compensated RTM using the constant Q viscoacoustic wave equation with decoupled amplitude attenuation and phase dispersion terms. However, the nonphysical amplitude-compensation process will inevitably amplify the high-frequency noise in the wavefield in an exponential form, causing the numerical simulation to become unstable. This is due to the fact that the amplitude of the compensation grows exponentially with frequency. In order to achieve stable attenuation-compensated RTM,we modify the analytic expression of the attenuation compensation extrapolation operator and make it only compensate for amplitude loss within the effective frequency band.Based on this modified analytic formula,we then derive an explicit time-space domain attenuation compensation extrapolation operator. Finally, the implementation procedure of stable attenuation-compensated RTM is presented. In addition to being simple to implement, the newly proposed attenuation-compensated extrapolation operator is superior to the conventional low-pass filter in suppressing random noise, which will further improve the imaging resolution. We use two synthetic and one land seismic datasets to verify the stability and effectiveness of the proposed attenuationcompensated RTM in improving imaging resolution in viscous media. 展开更多

The determination of seismic attenuation (s) (dB/cm) is a challenging task in earthquake science. This article employs genetic programming (GP) and minimax probability machine regression (MPMR) for prediction of s. GP is developed based on genetic algo- rithm. MPMR maximizes the minimum probability of future predictions being within some bound of the true regression function. Porosity (n) (%), permeability (k) (millidarcy), grain size (d) (μm), and clay content (c) (%) have been considered as inputs of GP and MPMR. The output of GP and MPMR is s. The developed GP gives an equation for prediction of s. The results of GP and MPMR have been compared with the artificial neural net- work. This article gives robust models based on GP and MPMR for prediction of s. 展开更多

Prediction of peak ground acceleration is an essential element in engineering seismology and it has received great attention in last few decades. In this paper, a comprehensive database of the strong-motion records of the 2008 great Wenchuan Ms 8.0 earthquake is analyzed to investigate the seismic attenuation relationship and the directivity effects. In contrast to most existing seismic attenuation models, the proposed model considers explicitly the directivity effect which has primary influence on the magnitude of ground motion. Bayesian model updating is used to obtain the model parameters and the associated uncertainty. Comparative study is performed with the well-known Boore-Joyner-Fumal empirical formula. Results show that consideration of the directivity effect is vital in modeling the seismic attenuation relationship. 展开更多

The carbonate reservoirs in the Tarim Basin are characterized by anisotropy and strong heterogeneity.Combined with an integrated analysis of data from seismic, geology, and drilling results,a series of attributes which are suitable for fractured and caved carbonate reservoir prediction is discussed, including amplitude, coherence analysis, spectra decomposition, seismic absorption attenuation analysis and impedance inversion.Moreover,3-D optimization of these attributes is achieved by integration of multivariate discriminant analysis and principle component analysis, where the logging data are taken as training samples.Using the optimized results, the spatial distribution and configuration features of the caved reservoirs can be characterized in detail. This technique not only improves the understanding of the spatial distribution of current reservoirs but also provides a significant basis for the discovery and production of carbonate reservoirs in the Tarim Basin. 展开更多

We collect the isoseismal data of 488 earthquakes in western China and 182 earthquakes in eastern China after 1900.The least square method is used to establish two models of the seismic intensity attenuation relationship partitions in China, based on the major and minor axis ellipse models, and the area and the major axis radius, respectively. The two models are applied to the calculation of the intensity circle of the earthquake events with a magnitude M_(S)≥5.0 from 2008 to 2019,and the actual intensity is compared with the model intensity value as an indicator to verify the consistency between the actual intensity and the value from the empirical statistical model.Three real earthquake results are selected to calculate the major and minor axis and area of the ellipse using the two intensity attenuation relationship models. After comparison,we summarize the deviation characteristics of the intensity value, and put forward corresponding improvement suggestions. 展开更多

The quantitative assessment of seismic hazard of Uzbekistan has been examined, and new maps of seismic zoning has been developed.Quasihomogeneous seismological areas and seism-generating zones are considered as seismic sources, based on the analysis of seismotectonic data. The seismological parametrization of seismic sources has been carried out, including determination of parameters of earthquake’s reoccurrence for different power levels, seismic potential and a predominant type motion in the source of occurring earthquakes. The reoccurrence parameters of seismic sources were both determined by directly from Gutenberg-Richter dependence law and using summation and distribution methods.Setting were conducted separately for a sample of strong(M≥5)and weak(M<5)earthquakes.The seismic potential Mmax of seismic active zones was determined by seismological and seismotectonic methods. The predominant type of movement in the faulting for each seismic source is reverse fault.Regional regularities of seismic intensity attenuation with distance of different power levels are determined. The seismic hazard is expressed in points of a macro seismic scale,in velocities and accelerations of ground motions, and it is characterized by calculated seismic intensity with the set probability(P=0.9,P=0.95,P=0.98 and P=0.99)not exceed within 50 years in the constructed maps.In seismic zoning map,the seismic intensity was in average soil conditions. The developed complex of maps considers a number of uncertainties of the input parameters in relation to both incompleteness of initial seismological and seismotectonic data,as well the probabilistic nature of seismic process and seismic intensity. The factors of uncertainty of the input parameters are taken into account by constructing a logic tree. The constructed maps of the general seismic zoning are intended for imple menting antiseismic actions in Uzbekistan. 展开更多

In the time-frequency analysis of seismic signals, the matching pursuit algorithm is an effective tool for non-stationary signals, and has high time-frequency resolution and a transient structure with local self-adaption. We expand the time-frequency dictionary library with Ricker, Morlet, and mixed phase seismic wavelets, to make the method more suitable for seismic signal time-frequency decomposition. In this paper, we demonstrated the algorithm theory using synthetic seismic data, and tested the method using synthetic data with 25% noise. We compared the matching pursuit results of the time-frequency dictionaries. The results indicated that the dictionary which matched the signal characteristics better would obtain better results, and can reflect the information of seismic data effectively. 展开更多

First, amplitude spectra of S-waves are extracted from 450 carefully-chosen earthquake records, called observed amplitude spectra. Then, after instrumental and site effect correction, theoretical amplitude spectra are made to fit observed amplitude spectra with nonlinear damped least-squares method to get the observed travel time over Q, provided that earthquake sources conform to Brune's disk dislocation model. Finally, by 3-D ray tracing method, theoretical travel time over Q is made to fit observed travel time over Q with nonlinear damped least-squares method. In the course of fitting, the velocity model, which is obtained by 3-D travel time tomography, remains unchanged, while only Q model is modified. When fitting came to the given accuracy, the ultimate Q model is obtained. The result shows that an NE-trending low Q zone exists at the depths of 10-18 km, and an NW-trending low Q zone exists at the depths of 12-18 km. These roughly coincide with the NE-trending and the NW-trending low velocity zones revealed by other scientists. The difference is that the low Q zones have a wider range than the low velocity zones. 展开更多

The constant Q property in viscoelastic media assumes that the quality factor Q does not change with frequency(i.e.,the Q value is independent of the frequency). For seismic waves propagating in viscoelastic media, the wave equation is determined by the viscoelastic media model.Equivalence relations exist between various frequency domain mathematical models and physical rheological models for the constant Q property.Considering two elastic moduli and three attenuation variables,24 kinds of wave equations based on diff erent generalized rheological models are divided into six classes in this study, and the 12 kinds of specifi c representation for the wave equations in the time domain are derived. On the basis of the equivalence relations between the generalized rheological models, the diff erence and equivalence relation between diff erent wave equations are proven and clarifi ed.Results show that the high-order generalized rheological model can accurately characterize the attenuation characteristics of seismic waves and has advantages in characterizing the dispersion characteristics in viscoelastic media.Lastly, the seismic refl ection characteristics caused by the diff erence of Q value are verifi ed by the forward modeling of the constant Q wave equation in this study, thereby providing a theoretical basis for the analysis and inversion of the formation Q value from refl ection seismic data. 展开更多
