Mechanical properties of semi-solid casting are dependent on multiple processing parameters, and improper processing parameters will not only reduce mean data but also increase variations. The present study investigated the impact of parameters in slurry preparation and heat treatment on the yield strength and ductility of T6 heat-treated A356 Al-Si alloy using rapid slurry forming(RSF)semi-solid casting. The focus was primarily on the robustness of mechanical properties based on Taguchi design method.By analyzing signal-to-noise ratio and minimum value calculated from-3S,the optimum slurry preparation parameters and heat treatment parameters were determined to be no quench, enthalpy exchange material(EEM)temperature of 140℃,EEM-to-melt ratio of 6mass%,stirring time of 18 s,solution heat treated at 520℃ for 2 h,and ageing heat treated at 190℃ for 6 h.In a small batch validation,the-3S yield strength and-3S elongation reach 256.1 MPa and 5.03% respectively, showing a satisfactory robustness. The hardness and microstructure of heat-treated samples with the best and worst properties were characterized to gain insight into the underlying mechanisms affecting the mean value and variations of mechanical properties. 展开更多

The as-cast amorphous Ti_(48)Zr_(27)Cu_(6)Nb_(5)Be_(14)composites,comprising in situ formedβ-Ti ductile crystalline precipitates, were prepared by water cooled copper mold suction casting. Then, the semi-solid composites were obtained after the as-cast composites were treated by semi-solid isothermal treatment. The microstructure evolution and kinetics of the composites were examined. Results show that the microstructures of both the as-cast and semi-solid composites comprise ofβ-Ti crystal phases and amorphous matrix phases. Before and after treatment, the crystals evolve from fine granular or fine dendritic crystals to coarse crystals. As the treatment temperature increasing or the time prolonging, the average crystal size gradually increases and the surface morphology of the crystals gradually becomes regular.By studying the microstructural evolution and dynamics during the isothermal treatment process,it is found that the final morphology ofβ-Ti crystals is influenced by the isothermal treatment temperature and time(t),and theβ-Ti evolution rate increases with an increase in treatment temperature. In addition,a linear relationship was observed between the size of cubicβ-Ti crystals(D^(3))and t;the growth kinetics factor K is 3.8μm^(3)·s^(-1).As the K value closes to 4μm^(3)·s^(-1),it is inferred the morphology evolution ofβ-Ti crystals is a coarsening behavior controlled by the diffusion of solute elements. 展开更多

Nowadays, having an effective technique in preparing semi-solid slurries for rheocasting process seems to be an essential requirement. In this study,semi-solid slurry of A356 aluminum alloy was prepared by three-phase annular electromagnetic stirring(A-EMS)technique under different conditions. The effects of stirring current, pouring temperature and stirring time on microstructural evolution, mean particle size, shape factor and solid fraction were investigated. The rheocasting process was carried out by using a drop weight setup and to inject the prepared semi-solid slurry in optimal conditions into the step-die cavity. The filling behavior and mechanical properties of parts were studied.Microstructural evolution showed that the best semi-solid slurry which had fine spherical particles with the average size of~27μm and a shape factor of~0.8 was achieved at the stirring current of 70 A,melt pouring temperature of 670℃,and stirring time of 30 s.Under these conditions, the step-die cavity was completely filled at die preheating temperature of 470℃.The hardness increases by decreasing step thickness as well as die preheating temperature. Moreover, the tensile properties are improved at lower die preheating temperatures. The fracture surface, which consists of a complex topography, indicates a typical ductile fracture. 展开更多

A357-SiCp/A357 layered composites were prepared using a semi-solid vacuum stirring suction casting method. The microstructures, mechanical properties, and thermal conductivities of the composites fabricated under different suction casting processes were compared.Additionally, the microstructural evolution characteristics and performance enhancement mechanism of the A357-SiCp/A357 layered composites were discussed. The results demonstrate that suction casting at 610°C with a low solid phase ratio can significantly enhance the material density and reduce the agglomeration of SiCp.The A357-SiC_(p)/A357 interface is clear and straight with good bonding. With an increase in the suction casting temperature, the bending resistance and thermal conductivity of the A357-SiC_(p)/A357 layered composites exhibit a trend of significantly increase at first and then slowly decrease owing to casting defects, interface bonding, and SiCp distribution.Compared with SiCp/A357 composites, the bending strength, deflection, and thermal conductivity of the A357-SiCp/A357 layered composites increase from 257 MPa,1.07 mm,and 155.72 W·(m·K)^(-1) to 298 MPa,2.1 mm,and 169.86 W·(m·K)^(-1),respectively.This study provides a reference for improving the rheological casting of aluminum matrix layered composites. 展开更多

The gas induced semi-solid(GISS) process was developed to create semi-solid slurry with fine and uniform globular structure. The combination of local rapid heat extraction and vigorous agitation by the injection of fine inert gas bubbles through a graphite diffuser in molten metal held at a temperature above its liquidus temperature changes the morphology of primary α(Al) from coarse dendritic to rosette-like and finally to fine globular. The GISS process produced semi-solid slurry at low solid fractions and then formed the slurry by a squeeze casting process to produce casting parts. The effects of primary phase morphology on the mechanical properties of Al-Si-Mg-Fe alloy were investigated. The results show that the ultimate tensile strength and elongation are affected by the shape factor and particle size of the primary α(Al). 展开更多

The structure evolution of the ZL109 alloy in the process of semi-solid squeeze casting and the mechanical properties of the components were investigated. The results show that (1) the eutectic silicon phase in original billets is refined in the low super-heat casting process; (2) the eutectic structure in billets starts to fuse and the crystals of the eutectic silicon phase are refined further and sphericized in the remelting process of billets; (3) in the semi-solid squeeze casting process, the sphericity of the a phase and the refining of the silicon phase occur, owing to the friction between solid and liquid; (4) in the process of heat treatment, the eutectic a phase aggregates with the primary a phase and the eutectic silicon pieces aggregate together. Semi-solid isothermal heat treatment was proposed to directly process cold-rolled ZL104 aluminum alloys and obtain semi-solid bil-lets.The effects of two process parameters, namely, temperature and processing time,on the microstructure and hardness of the resulting bil-lets were also experimentally examined.Average grain size(AGS)increased and the shape factor(SF)of the grain improved as the process temperature increased. The SF of the grain also increased with increasing processing time, and the AGS was augmented when the processing time was prolonged from 5 to 20 min at 570℃.The hardness of the aluminum alloy decreased because of the increase in AGS with increasing temperature and processing time. The optimal temperature and time for the preparation of semi-solid ZL104 aluminum alloys were 570℃and 5 min, respectively.Under optimal process parameters, the AGS,SF,and hardness of the resulting alloy were 35.88μm,0.81,and 55.24 MPa,respectively. The Lifshitz-Slyozov-Wagner relationship was analyzed to determine the coarsening rate constant at 570℃,and a rate constant of 1357.2μm3/s was obtained. 展开更多

The effects of pouring temperature, short electromagnetic stirring with low strength and then soaking treatment on the microstructure of AISi7Mg alloy were investigated. The results show that if AlSi7Mg alloy is poured at 630 or 650℃ and meanwhile stirred by an electromagnetic field at a low power for a short time, the pouring process can be easily controlled and most solidified primary α-Al grains become spherical and only a few of them are rosette-like. Weak electromagnetic stirring makes the temperature field more homogeneous and makes the primary α-Al grains disperse in a larger region, which leads to the spherical microstructures of primary α-Al grains. When the AISi7Mg alloy is soaked or reheated at the semisolid state, the primary α-Al grains ripen further and they become more spherical, which is favorable to the semi-solid forming of AlSi7Mg alloy. 展开更多

The semi-solid slurry of a hypoeutectic Al-Si alloy was manufactured by low superheat pouring and weak electromagnetic stirring. The effects of pouting temperature and stirring power on the semi-solid slurry were investigated. The results indicated that the semi-solid slurry to satisfy rheocasting can be manufactured by low superheat pouring and weak electromagnetic stirring. The pouring temperature (or superheat) and the stirring power remarkably affected the morphology of primary α-Al and the size of primary α-Al, and there is no obvious effect of stirring time on primary α-Al. Compared with the samples made by low superheat pouring with no stirring, the nucleation rate, particle morphology and grain size of primary α-Al in A356 were markedly improved by low superheat pouring and weak electromagnetic stirring. On the condition of weak electromagnetic stirring, the pouring temperature with low superheat can be suitably raised to reach the effectiveness obtained from the lower pouring temperature without stirring. 展开更多

Microstructure evolution of processed Mg-Al-Zn alloy by equal channel angular extrusion(ECAE)in semi-solid isothermal treatment was investigated. The results show that with increasing semi-solid isothermal treatment temperature, the α phase solid grain size of processed Mg-Al-Zn alloy by ECAE increases firstly due to coarsening of α phase solid grains, then decreases due to melting of α phase solid grains. With the increase of extrusion passes during ECAE,the α phase solid grain size in the following semi-solid isothermal treatment decreases. The α phase solid grain size of processed Mg-Al-Zn alloy by ECAE under route BC is the smallest, while the α phase solid grain size of processed material by ECAE under route A is the largest. The primary mechanism of spheroid formation depends on the melting of recrystallizing boundaries and diffusion of solute atoms in the semi-solid state. 展开更多

The rheological behavior of semi-solid AZ91D at steady state is studied usinga Couette type viscometer in the present paper. The results show that the apparent viscosity ofsemi-solid AZ91D at the steady state increases with the solid fraction increasing, and goes upsharply when the solid fraction reaches a certain value, which is called critical fraction. Inaddition, the apparent viscosity of semi-solid AZ91D at the steady state takes on a distinctdowntrend with the shearing rate increasing, which indicates a strong shear thinning property. Inaddition, the critical solid fraction becomes higher under larger shearing rate, owing to the moreglobular shape of the solid particles. Based on the present experiment results, an empiricalequation is built as that, relating the steady state apparent viscosity of semi-solid AZ91D with thesolid fraction f_s and shearing rate gamma at the same time: eta_(app)=10.74 exp (6.95 f_s)gamma^(-0.86). 展开更多

The investment on semi-solid die casting processes of AZ91D magnesium alloy brackets for generators in JH70-type motorbikes is introduced. The processes of low super-heat and cooling slope for the preparation of billets with non-dendritic microstructure, the remelting of billets for thixoforming and the parameters in the process of semi-sohd thixoforming have been researched. The results show that primary billets with non-dendritical structures can be prepared by forming great amount of nuclei in melt via the process of low super heat. By optimizing the remelting process through adjusting the current of the induced equipment, semi-solid billets with a structure of spherical grains were obtained from the primary billets with non-dendritical structure. The range of 580℃ to 583℃ is the proper remelting temperatures by which the billets have an expected thixotropy and can be transferred to a die-casting machine. The optimized parameters of semi-solid forming in a die-casting machine are as follows: the area of the ingate in the die is 383.5 mm^2, the speed of the pierce of the machine 5 m/s, the shot pressure of the pierce 75 MPa, and the maintenance pressure of the pierce 350 MPa. The castings of brackets for supporting generators in JH70 type motorbikes were formed by adopting the optimized processes and parameters mentioned above. 展开更多

The AZ91 D magnesium alloy containing rare earth Gd was prepared in this study, and the effect of semi-solid isothermal heat treatment on the microstructure of the alloy was investigated to obtain an optimum semi-solid structure. Results show that Gd can refine the microstructure of AZ91 D magnesium alloy, and the optimum semi-solid AZ91 D microstructure can be achieved by adding 1.5wt.% Gd. After treated at 585 °C for 30 min, the well distributed rose-shaped and near-spherical semi-solid microstructures of AZ91D+1.5wt.%Gd alloy can be obtained. The liquid phase of the semi-solid alloy consists of three components, namely, the molten pool, the "entrapped liquid" pool and the liner liquid film which separates two neighbor particles. The solid phase is composed of two phases, the primary α-Mg particles and the α-Mg phase formed in the second stage of solidification. With the increase of holding time, melting which causes the decrease of the primary α-Mg particle size is the dominant mechanism in the initial stage while coalescence and Ostwald ripening tend to be the principles later. 展开更多
