The term phantom sensations(PS) refers to sensations in a missing body part. They are almost universal in amputees and can be both painful and not painful. Although PS have been frequently described in limb amputees, ...The term phantom sensations(PS) refers to sensations in a missing body part. They are almost universal in amputees and can be both painful and not painful. Although PS have been frequently described in limb amputees, they can also occur in other clinical conditions and several pathophysiological interpretations have been proposed, with a predominance of theories based on a central origin. Actually, different mechanisms are able to create a phantom sensation. After an amputation, PS are frequently generated by the genesis of ectopic action potentials in the interrupted nerve fibers but the PS generator can also be more proximal. Sometimes PS are not created by the stimulation of somatosensory fibers with a missing territory, but they can be the result of central sensitization or neuroplastic changes that allow for the convergence of impulses coming from different body parts(referred sensations), one of which is missing. In conclusion, PS can be generated by both neuropathic and non-neuropathic mechanisms developed in the amputated body part or in other parts of the nervous system. Since these mechanisms are not pathognomonic of amputation there are no hidden ghosts to look for in phantom sensations. Twelve healthy young adults were assigned to male (...The goal of this preliminary study was to examine the effect of participants’ sexes on the temporal sequence of dominant sensations elicited by fruit-flavored teas. Twelve healthy young adults were assigned to male (n = 6) and female (n = 6) groups. Both groups were evaluated for four sensations using four fruit-flavored teas with 0.05 M sucrose using the temporal dominance of sensations (TDS) method. Only two sensations, sweetness and fruitiness, were consistently reported in the two groups. The male group first reported fruitiness and then sweetness as the dominant sensation following ingestion of the samples. Conversely, the female group reported these two dominant sensations in the reverse order. Significant dominant durations between the two sensations largely varied among the samples in both groups. These results suggest that there are sex-based differences in the temporal sequence of dominant sensations elicited by fruit-flavored teas as evaluated by the TDS method.展开更多
Leakage currents, tiny currents flowing from an everyday-life appliance through the body to the ground, can cause a non-adequate perception (called electrocutaneous sensation, ECS) or even pain and should be avoided...Leakage currents, tiny currents flowing from an everyday-life appliance through the body to the ground, can cause a non-adequate perception (called electrocutaneous sensation, ECS) or even pain and should be avoided. Safety standards for low-frequency range are based on experimental results of current thresholds of electrocutaneous sensations, which however show a wide range between about 50 pA (rms) and 1000 μA (rms). In order to be able to explain these differences, the perception threshold was measured repeatedly in experiments with test persons under identical experimental setup, but by means of different methods (measuring strategies), namely: direct adjustment, classical threshold as amperage of 50% perception probability, and confidence rating procedure of signal detection theory. The current is injected using a I cm2 electrode at the highly touch sensitive part of the index fingertip. These investigations show for the first time that the threshold of electrocutaneous sensations is influenced both by adaptation to the non-adequate stimulus and individual, emotional factors. Theretbre, classical methods, on which the majority of the safety investigations are based, cannot be used to determine a leakage current threshold. The confidence rating procedure of the modem signal detection theory yields a value of 179.5 μA (rms) at 50 Hz power supply net frequency as the lower end of the 95% confidence range considering the variance in the investigated group. This value is expected to be free of adaptation influences, and is distinctly lower than the European limits and supports the stricter regulations of Canada and USA.展开更多

Methods Twenty one volunteers received EA. According to the tissue specificities of acupoints, 5 acupoint pairs were selected, named Zúsānlǐ (足三里 ST 36) vs Yánglíngquán (阳陵泉 GB 34, different meridians), Nèiguān (内关 PC 6) vs Dàlíng (大陵 PC 7, different tissues), Zúsānlǐ (足三里 ST 36) vs Shuǐdào (水道 ST 28, different nerve segments), Guānyuán (关元 CV 4) vs Zhōngwǎn (中脘 CV 12, different nerve segments), and Zúsānlǐ (足三里 ST 36) vs Guānyuán (关元 CV 4, different meridians, tissues and nerve segments). The electric frequency was 15 Hz. The electric current was under the subject’s tolerance without sharp pain induced. EA lasted 90 s with 3 discontinuities. The sensations, such as soreness, numbness, fullness/distention, heaviness, tingling, pressure, dull pain, hotness and coldness were recorded as well as the current flow output in association with the needling sensations. The differences in the frequency, intensity and current flow output relevant with the needling sensations were compared among the different acupoint pairs. Results There were no significant differences in the frequency of the needling sensations among the different acupoint pairs (all P〉0.05). Of 9 different sensations of EA, fullness/distention, numbness and soreness presented the most commonly and remarkably; heaviness, pressure and tingling were on the second top; dull pain, hotness and coldness occurred at the lower frequency. There were the differences in the intensity of some needling sensations among the acupoint pairs, in which, the intensity of soreness, fullness/distention and heaviness was stronger at Zúsānlǐ (足三里 ST 36) vs Shuǐdào (水道 ST 28) (all P〈0.05); the intensity of fullness / distention, and numbness was stronger at Zúsānlǐ (足三里 ST 36) vs Guānyuán (关元 CV 4) (P〈0.01); the intensity of fullness/distention was stronger at Guānyuán (关元 CV 4) vs Zhōngwǎn (中脘 CV 12) (P〈0.05). At present,air handling units are usually used indoors to improve the indoor environment quality.However,while introducing fresh air to improve air quality,air velocity has a certain impact on the occupants’thermal c...At present,air handling units are usually used indoors to improve the indoor environment quality.However,while introducing fresh air to improve air quality,air velocity has a certain impact on the occupants’thermal comfort.Therefore,it is necessary to explore the optimization of air-fluid-body interaction dynamics.In this study,the indoor air flow was changed by changing the opening and closing degree of the blower,and the thermal manikin is introduced to objectively evaluate the human thermal comfort under different air velocities.The main experimental results show that the air change rate increases with the increase of the opening and closing degree of the blower considering an ACH(air changes per hour)range between 3.8 and 10.For a better prediction,a linear correlation with a coefficient of 0.995 is proposed.As the blower’s opening is adjusted to 20%,25%,30%,35%,and 40%,the air velocity sensor positioned directly beneath the air inlet records average velocities of 0.19,0.20,0.21,0.28,and 0.34 m/s over four hours,respectively.Observations on thermal comfort and the average sensation experienced by individuals indicate an initial increase followed by a decline when the blower’s operation begins,with optimal conditions achieved at a 35%opening.These findings offer valuable insights for future indoor air ventilation and heat transfer design strategies.展开更多

In order to find out how the climatic characteristics affect people's adaptability to thermal environments,experimental studies in a climate chamber are conducted on the effects of transition seasons(from spring to ...In order to find out how the climatic characteristics affect people's adaptability to thermal environments,experimental studies in a climate chamber are conducted on the effects of transition seasons(from spring to summer)and the occupants' native areas on indoor thermal sensations.Results reveal that people's tolerances to cool and warm indoor environments are different in the transition season.When the outdoor temperature is higher,the occupants have a weaker tolerance to a cool indoor environment,but a stronger tolerance to a warm indoor environment.Besides,it is found that the occupants' thermal sensations depend on both the climatic characteristics of the season and their native areas.The people from southern China present a greater tolerance to both warm and cool indoor environments than those from northern China.The reason can be explained according to the occupants' adaptability to the climatic characteristics and the indoor thermal environments of their native areas in different climate zones.展开更多

文摘Neurodegenerative diseases(NDDs)are a class of disorders characterized by the gradual loss or malfunction of specific cell populations in the nervous system,which can be triggered by genetic or environmental factors.As a result,patients often experience a decline in mobility,sensation,memory,and cognition,which can ultimately lead to a fatal outcome.The global incidence of NDDs,including Alzheimer’s disease,Parkinson’s disease,Huntington’s disease,amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS),and multiple sclerosis,is increasing.
文摘Dear Editor,We present a case of ruptured renal angiomyolipoma(AML)and bilateral renal staghorn calculi.We discuss about the management of this patient by angioembolization,partial nephrectomy,and pyelolithotomy,followed by contralateral interval percutaneous nephrolithotomy(PCNL).Our case is a 40-year-old male who presented with history of dull aching and dragging sensation in bilateral flanks of 6-month duration.He was admitted and evaluated at other hospital for dizziness,sweating,and loss of consciousness.He was found to have bilateral staghorn calculi and left AML and was referred to our institute for further management after initial stabilization.The proper written and informed consent was taken from the patient for management as well as publication of the report and images,maintaining the patient’s anonymity.

文摘At present,air handling units are usually used indoors to improve the indoor environment quality.However,while introducing fresh air to improve air quality,air velocity has a certain impact on the occupants’thermal comfort.Therefore,it is necessary to explore the optimization of air-fluid-body interaction dynamics.In this study,the indoor air flow was changed by changing the opening and closing degree of the blower,and the thermal manikin is introduced to objectively evaluate the human thermal comfort under different air velocities.The main experimental results show that the air change rate increases with the increase of the opening and closing degree of the blower considering an ACH(air changes per hour)range between 3.8 and 10.For a better prediction,a linear correlation with a coefficient of 0.995 is proposed.As the blower’s opening is adjusted to 20%,25%,30%,35%,and 40%,the air velocity sensor positioned directly beneath the air inlet records average velocities of 0.19,0.20,0.21,0.28,and 0.34 m/s over four hours,respectively.Observations on thermal comfort and the average sensation experienced by individuals indicate an initial increase followed by a decline when the blower’s operation begins,with optimal conditions achieved at a 35%opening.These findings offer valuable insights for future indoor air ventilation and heat transfer design strategies.

文摘In order to find out how the climatic characteristics affect people's adaptability to thermal environments,experimental studies in a climate chamber are conducted on the effects of transition seasons(from spring to summer)and the occupants' native areas on indoor thermal sensations.Results reveal that people's tolerances to cool and warm indoor environments are different in the transition season.When the outdoor temperature is higher,the occupants have a weaker tolerance to a cool indoor environment,but a stronger tolerance to a warm indoor environment.Besides,it is found that the occupants' thermal sensations depend on both the climatic characteristics of the season and their native areas.The people from southern China present a greater tolerance to both warm and cool indoor environments than those from northern China.The reason can be explained according to the occupants' adaptability to the climatic characteristics and the indoor thermal environments of their native areas in different climate zones.
