The literature on international students’ experiences frequently depicts them within a ‘deficient’ framework, highlighting their perceived lack of essential skills for managing their studies. Moreover, international students’ emotional experiences are often construed as personal and psychological attributes, with their emotions viewed as transient and pathological phases that they will eventually overcome to assimilate into the local context. However, there exists a dearth of literature investigating international students’ experiences from a sociological perspective, particularly concerning their emotional experiences within the broader social and political milieu. Utilizing a longitudinal research design to monitor 25 Chinese international postgraduates from multiple universities in London and Glasgow over the course of one year, this study illuminates the racialised, classed, and gendered dimensions of international students’ experiences in UK higher education through an exploration of their feelings of shame. Drawing on the research findings, it is evident that power relations operate insidiously and covertly to systematically frame international students’ experiences as personal or cultural ‘deficiency’. This process represents a form of misrecognition, which manifests in racialised, gendered, and classed feelings of shame, experienced at the personal level as insecurity, ‘stupidity’, exclusion, and self-doubt. Consequently, social and cultural inequalities within higher education are often situated at the individual level. 展开更多

An evolutionary view of social anxiety disorder in its original occurrence of function and adaptive design helps us understand why SAD(social anxiety disorder)exists in the first place. In this paper,we found social anxiety can be a useful strategy to acquire better resources and maintain harmony in interpersonal relationships in ancestral environments. This finding helps us reveal how the mismatch between the ancestral and modern world may cause the overreaction we see in SAD in contemporary contexts. In addition, alcohol seems to be a short-term solution to ease the negative impact of SAD,but its long-term effectiveness requires further research. The paper also introduces compassion therapy to encourage patients to rekindle their passion for themselves by connecting with a friendly social environment. To better understand SAD,we encouraged future research to focus on rebuilding inner values and group relationships. 展开更多

Translation studies has undergone three different periods: the traditional philological period, the modem linguistic period and the contemporary cultural period. Ever since the cultural turn, especially after the introduction of deconstruction into translation, traditional translation theories have been greatly affected. The traditional principle like faithfulness to the source text and the writer has been attacked and the translator's subjectivity and creativity have been greatly advocated. Under such circumstances, this paper, however, holds that translation studies should turn to ethics for the messy situation, and translators should be able to identify norms of honor and shame in translation practice. 展开更多

AIM: To increase satisfaction and diminish anxiety and shame during colonoscopy, we developed novel double pants (NDP) which consist of doubled fabrics with an inner hole. The aim of study was to compare satisfaction, anxiety and shame between NDP and conventional single pants (CSP). METHODS: Total 160 consecutive examinees were randomly divided into NDP and CSP group. Before colonoscopy, questionnaires identifying state and trait anxiety were completed. After colonoscopy, questionnaires for overall satisfaction (Group Health Association of America 9) and pants-specific satisfaction (5-20), state anxiety (20-80), and shame (6-24) were interviewed. RESULTS: Pants-specific satisfaction scores regarding willingness to repeat colonoscopy using same pants (3.3 ± 0.8 vs 2.1 ± 0.9, P < 0.001) and recommendation of same pants to other people (3.3 ± 0.7 vs 2.0 ± 1.0, P < 0.001) were significantly higher in NDP than CSP groups. State anxiety (33.0 ± 7.0 vs 35.4 ± 6.9, P = 0.028) and shame (6.6 ± 1.5 vs 8.1 ± 3.2, P = 0.001) after colonoscopy was lower in NDP group compared with CSP group. CONCLUSION: The NDP contribute to increase satisfaction and decrease anxiety and shame after colonoscopy. 展开更多

Extraordinary success can make you rich and powerful. It can also leave you incurious, blinkered, invulnerable, deeply unhappy and ironically—mediocre. In my work,as an executive coach crisis-counselor,I have found that the ruthless pursuit of over-achievement towards success, power, and money is playing a major role in the erosion of people’s happiness. That premise is supported by clear evidence of unhappiness and dissatisfaction seen across the board in western culture, limiting the phenomenon not only to those who are extremely successful, but to anyone buying into“hustle culture1”and developing extreme anxiety by scrolling through the lives of others on Instagram. In a society that still values over-achievement in the form of hard work above all2,this paper aims at a central tenet of western societies that over-achieving paves the road to success and riches, which lead to happiness. This talk will illustrate through proprietary and up to date global research show the opposite that over-achieving tendencies in any department of life can limit happiness profoundly. 展开更多

The premise of this abstract focuses on lessons learned as a clinician through the process of being invited into the homes, lives and stories of trauma and incredible resilience for native survivors of Indian residential schools. Through the process of unravelling stories of past trauma with a view to recovery/freedom from symptoms, meaningful therapy requires the weaving together of traditional beliefs and practices with trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy approaches. Culturally, the relevant treatment respects traditional beliefs and focuses on their innate resiliency historically within their culture. As a clinician invited intimately through the therapeutic relationship into the lives of First Nations abuse survivors, the healing power of cultural identity was discovered along them. Similarly, the author's role as therapist was one of teachers, who guided them through the process of telling their stories to the peace and acceptance utilizing therapeutic techniques from an eclectic spectrum of therapeutic approaches. All the while, it should interweave their stories and native beliefs into the therapy journey. It was a process of co-creating healing through a mutual respect of the shared roles as guide, teacher, story teller and healer. Culturally, the relevant psychotherapy requires the weaving of two world views to create a basket of healing. 展开更多

The failure of the parent's company has psychological, social, and economic repercussions for the children of theseentrepreneurs. Research has identified that the personality traits of conscientiousness and neuroticism are the majorinfluencers of the shame of parental failure among personality traits. The dimensions of openness, extraversion, andagreeableness were not significant. The research is quantitative and cross-sectional. The sample is non-probabilistic andconvenient, consisting of literate people from five continents and 33 countries, with a greater predominance of responsesfrom Brazil and Portugal. Data collection on-line was carried out by average social workers, allied to 19 institutions of highereducation. The metric used is called the five dimensions of personality--short version. A multiple linear regression wasperformed to assess the intensity of the five dimensions of personality. Conscientiousness and neuroticism were significantpredictors of shame. The results are important to help characterize the children of entrepreneurs who have failed and fill agap in the literature on entrepreneurship. 展开更多

While there is no consensus on the number of domestic sex trafficking victims in India, the phenomenon is estimated to be widespread and the evidence of its impact on victims is devastating. This paper explored the narratives of 10 sex trafficked women from a major non-government organization in New Delhi. Qualitative methodology was adopted and data were collected through open-ended unstructured interviews. The victimological paradigm including the Lifestyle Risk Model (LRM) by Van der Hoven and Maree provided the framework to discuss the key issues related to sex trafficking. Psychological experiences such as being abused by husbands, and in some cases, victims' own families; social conditions such as poverty and education; cultural practices such as vulnerability of women and marginalization; and lifestyle risk factors were observed throughout the stories of the victims. Furthermore, shame was found to be the core emotion in the stigmatization process. Limitations and future directions are also discussed. 展开更多

In order to ensure the existence of the gender and age differences of middle school students' shame, 1258 Shanghai middle school students are surveyed with the help of the Middle school students' shame measurement scale with the combination of delaminating and random sampling. The results of questionnaire show that there are significant gender differences in middle school students' shame and the average scores of male students' shame are higher than those of female students. Besides, there does exist significant age differences in middle school students' shame, but it is not simple linear relationship between the feeling of shame and ages. The feeling of shame reaches maximum at the age of 14 and intervention should be given at this age, which young students feel sensitive most. It is suggested that collective remission of the shame should be offered to middle school students with the methods such as physical exercises, persuasion etc. 展开更多

In this study,I analyze Glissant’s idea of the Caribbean society as an inclusive community that treats its members with equality and mutual respect. The literary analysis includes novels Brown Girl in the Ring(BGR)by Nalo Hopkinson,Les Affres d’un défi(The Throes of a Challenge)(AF)by Frankétienne, and L’Envers du décor(Behind the Scene)(ED)by Ernest Pépin. All three novels demonstrate how the enslaving western governments of the Black populations of the Caribbean, have dispossessed the Black people of their culture and identity and instilled a feeling of shame into them, and minimized them as zombies.Glissant, like the mentioned authors, raises the question of whether our modern governments still operate on the same principles.Ernest Pépin shows how modern tourists and settlers still envision the Caribbean islands as Christopher Columbus did for the Western world’s profit only.Glissant proposes another form of world relations in the Caribbean, neither ontological nor one of political affiliation with France, but a rhizomatic relation with all the former communities of which the Caribbean peoples are composed. 展开更多

This paper considers the difference between the values attached to love of country in early China and in today's world, through exploration of a series of concept clusters centered on "loyalty,"“glory,""honor," and "identity." Using a wide array of sources, including legends about exemplary figures in antiquity, it assesses the extent to which patriotism or something like patriotism was a normative value in the distant past. It also outlines the appropriate limits of patriotism which the early thinkers insisted upon, thinking them useful guidelines for today. 展开更多

Moral Psychology of Shame in Early Confucian Philosophy

In Westem philosophy and psychology, shame is characterized as a self-critical emotion that is often contrasted with the similarly self-critical but morally active emotion of guilt. If shame is negative concern over endangered or threatened self-image (usually in front of others), guilt is autonomous moral awareness of one's wrongdoings and reparative motivation to correct one's moral misconduct. Recently, many psychologists have begun to discuss the moral significance of shame in their comparative studies of non-Western cultures. In this new approach, shame is characterized as a positive moral emotion and active motivation for self-reflection and self-cultivation. If shame is a positive and active moral emotion, what is its moral psychological nature? In this paper, I will analyze shame from the perspective of cultural psychology and early Confucian philosophy. Unlike many Western philosophers, Confucius and Mencius discuss shame as a form of moral excellence. In early Confucian texts, shame is not a reactive emotion of an endangered self but a moral disposition that supports a self-critical and self-transformative process of moral development. 展开更多

As the number of immigration and their later generations grow in the workforce of more developed Western countries, understanding the processes and consequences of acculturation has gained a new level of importance. An old and re-emerging issue is the morality and reparative behavior in Western versus Eastern cultures, as well as its antecedents and consequences. We examined the effects of acculturation on the perception of psychological proximity, the intensity of moral emotions of shame and guilt, and the degree of compensation to victims of one's wrongdoing. Our sample was comprised of a collectivistic group from a shame culture, China, and an acculturated group of Chinese living in a much less collectivistic society of a guilt culture, Canada. Our results indicated that participants' perception of psychological proximity to other people and the level of compensation offered to the victims of transgression were significantly different among the two samples. Furthermore, shame and guilt mediated the relationship between perceived psychological proximity and the decision to compensate differently. 展开更多

During the War of Resistance to Japan (1937-45), the cultural scene in Japanese-occupied Shanghai took on a "feminine" quality, as female leads dominated stage performance and film screens. This essay seeks to engage this gendered phenomenon through examples of Ouyang Yuqian's wartime play Peach Blossom Fan (Taohua shan) and the film Mulan Joins the Army (Mulan congjun). Borrowing affect theory in conjunction with the gendered perception of modernity, the author argues that these representations of female characters, on the one hand, highlight the subjective projection of male intellectuals motivated by intense feelings of shame and anger, which constitutes a feminized national imagination encountering the colonial Other. On the other hand, such representations continue the May Fourth project of enlightening and liberating woman from the conventional family while reintroducing the concept of the nation in the family setting and proposing the foundational family as the basic unit of the new nation. 展开更多
