Socio-cultural Embeddedness of Spatial Agglomeration of Creative Industries in Shanghai

Rapidly emerged creative industries receive increasing attention from a variety of disciplines. However, the space features of creative industries and its association with local socio-cultural contexts have not been fully understood, especially at a micro-city level. This study attempts to understand the agglomeration of creative industries in Shanghai from the sociology perspective. For this study, this paper utilizes primarily a questionnaire survey to explain the space features of creative industries in Shanghai. The results indicate an extensive socio-cultural embeddedness of the agglomeration of creative industries in Shanghai. First, strong emphasis on face-to-face contacts by creative professionals makes geographical agglomeration necessary for creative industries. Second, the reason why inner city of Shanghai is popular among creative professionals and enterprises lies in the diversity of cultures and special environment of the former colonial zones of Shanghai. Additionally, highly concentrated dining and entertainment facilities in the central city of Shanghai offer creative workers social networking places and nightlife venues. Third, as the educational attainment of local citizens and the protection of intellectual property are highly stressed by creative professionals, research and design specialized creative industries are more likely located near universities and research institutes.

A STUDY ON LOCATION OF TOWNSHIP INDUSTRY IN SHANGHAI SUBURBS

The township industry in Shanghai suburbs has undergone a rapid development in the past few years. Aimed at studying the spatial law of the township industry in Shanghai suburbs, three kinds of indexes including distribution density, economic benefit, and regional structure are selected and analysed using correlation analysis method. There are 12 indexes in total. It is found that the locational variation of the township industry in Shanghai suburbs conforms to the following distribution equation:y=ae-bx (x】 5)The above equation has been more and more conforming to the real distribution of the township industry. It is obvious that decreasing trend from inner suburban districts to outer suburban districts is an important character of the locational variation of the township industry of Shanghai suburbs. Impact of Hollowing-out of Industry on Regional Economic Growth– Evidence from Shanghai

Shanghai,the largest and the most developed city in China,has experienced a rapid economic development in the recent ten years.It has entered into a post-industrial era,in which the manufacturing industry is quickly leaving.The proportion of real economy based on manufacturing is decreasing continuously,whereas the proportion of virtual economy based on service and financial industry is increasing.This is a typical phenomenon of hollowing-out of industry.If this trend cannot be controlled,the excessive reliance on virtual economy may make Shanghai more fragile when facing economic crisis on a large scale.This paper analyzes the influence of specific performance factors of hollowing-out of industry on Shanghai’s regional economic growth through empirical research and provides policy suggestion on how to achieve higher economic growth.This paper selects monthly time series data from January 2003 to February 2017 in Shanghai and analyzes the relation between factors of hollowing-out of industry and Shanghai’s economic growth by OLS.Empirical results show that the purchasing power index of industrial producers and gross import have a positive relation with economic growth,while the investment in fixed asset and the cost of land and human resource have negative effects on economic growth.
