In this paper we first explore what scholarship of teaching (SOT), shared governance and change management means, both in terms of the way that is represented in the literature and the way that is understood by academic staff themselves. From this information we derive qualitative and quantitative interpretation which captures the variations found in the literature and empirical studies. In the final section we illustrate how the state of readiness in the three areas is in place for the development of the SoT, shared governance, and change management in University X. 展开更多

Objective:The literature provides evidence about the positive impact of shared governance implementation in nursing departments and units,as well as on several aspects of nursing practice, including nurse empowerment,engagement,well-being,job satisfaction, retention, and positive outcomes in direct patient care.Accordingly, many nursing departments of United Arab Emirates(UAE)hospitals have implemented shared governance in their units. However, the success of implementation varies among these hospitals. Therefore, the study aimed to explore the progress of shared governance implementation in hospitals, identify the enablers and inhibitors of implementing the model, and produce a recommendation to help the nursing departments of hospitals to overcome challenges and accelerate the implementation process. Methods:The study used an inductive, qualitative case-study research method and semi-structured in-depth interviews with a purposive sample of 15 nurses working in various units in a tertiary hospital in UAE.The authors used a thematic data analysis approach to find the results. Results:The results identified immediate manager understanding and support as a significant enabler and lack of senior management support, nurses'attitudes and behaviors, and time as the main barriers. The study highlights that nurses are positive and enthusiastic about improving the current situation of shared governance by providing several suggestions and strategies. Conclusions:The study highlights that senior nursing managers should re-evaluate shared governance implementation and modify the strategies accordingly. 展开更多

Purpose:This article examines the Japanese teaching profession’s position on current school governance reforms in Japan and the difficulties teachers are facing as the reforms progress.Design/Approach/Methods:This article describes how a policy for developing teacher quality standards tends to suppress teacher independence while increasing the heteronomy of the teaching profession. The article discusses how Japan can meet its goal of ensuring“expertise in the teaching profession”by referring to the relationship between“professionalism”and“publicness”in the theories of occupational sociology.Findings:Expertise in the teaching profession is based on a mixture of academic and practical knowledge. The term“educational professionals”should be interpreted to include both“researchers”and“practitioners.”A sustainable governance mechanism for the Japanese teaching profession should be built on a four-way relationship among researchers, practitioners, citizens, and government administrators.Originality/Value:This study provides a critical review of a broad-reaching educational policy and proposes a new approach for restructuring the governance of the Japanese teaching profession. 展开更多

Introduction:A thorough understanding of ecology is a necessity as the Earth becomes crowded, there is more intense resource use and exhaustion, and the exposure to pollutants has diversified.Outcomes:Everyone must be involved as we develop the moral compass and maps for a desirable world. The transition will be made within the context of complex social forces, which must be engaged in purposeful collaboration and action. All individuals have the embryonic need and possess diverse abilities to contribute to the transcendence of problems arising from the human response to social inequities.Discussion:These will be difficult and nuanced transitions. One example is the Balinese water distribution system, whose site-specific adjustments developed over thousands of years.Examples from country-to-country comparisons show that Eco-civilizations,to be'civil',must be fair, inclusive, and joyful, and more than about misleading metrics like Gross Domestic Product, individuality, material accumulations and competition. Conclusion:We are in this together;it is not'them or us'-it is only'Us'. 展开更多
