Shot peening is a surface modification technology with the metal surface nano machine(SNC),which can modify the surface microstructure and extend the fatigue life of Cu-19Ni alloy. The hardness, damage evolution and mechanical properties were investigated and characterized by scanning electron microscope(SEM),laser confocal microscope(LSM)and material surface performance tester(CFT).The results showed that the surface roughness and friction coefficient of Cu-19Ni alloy decreased with the increase of shot peening duration and diameter, while the microhardness and strength increased. Moreover, with the increase in shot peening duration and diameter,SEM observation showed that the fracture dimples became smaller, meanwhile, with the increase of small cleavage planes, shear tearing ridges and the thickness of the surface nano layer, the fracture mode gradually evolved from plastic to brittle fracture. The uniaxial tensile test of shot peened Cu-19Ni alloy was carried out by MTS testing machine combined with digital image correlation technology(DIC).The evolution of Cu-19Ni surface damage was analyzed, and the evolution equations describing the damage of large deformation zone and small deformation zone were established. The effect of shot peening on the damage evolution behavior of Cu-19Ni alloy was revealed. 展开更多

To investigate the improvement in the fatigue strength of magnesium alloy by peening methods, magnesium alloy AZ31 was treated by submerged laser peening(SLP),cavitation peening(CP),and shot peening(SP),and the fatigue properties were evaluated by a plane bending fatigue test.In the case of SLP,both the impact induced by laser ablation(LA)and that caused by laser cavitation(LC),which developed after LA,were used.In the present study, the fatigue life at a constant bending stress was examined to determine the suitable coverage. It was found that the fatigue strengths at N=10^(7)for the SLP,CP,and SP specimens treated by each optimum condition were 56%,18%,and 16%higher,respectively,than that of the non-peened(NP)specimen,which was 97 MPa.The key factors in the improvement of fatigue strength by peening methods were work hardening and the introduction of compressive residual stress. 展开更多

Shot peening can improve fatigue strength of materials by creating compressive residual stress field in their surface layers, and offers a protection against crack initiation and propagation, corrosion, etc. And fatigue fracture and stress corrosion cracking of NAK80 steel parts are improved effectively.Currently there lacks in-depth research in which the beneficial effect of the residual stress may be offset by the surface damage associated with shot peening, especially in terms of the research on the effective control of shot peening intensity. In order to obtain the surface residual stress field of NAK80 steel after shot peening, the samples are shot peened by pneumatic shot peening machine with different rules. The residual stress in the precipitation-hardening layer of NAK80 steel is measured before and after a shot peening treatment by X-ray diffraction method. In order to obtain true residual stress field, integral compensation method is used to correct results.By setting up analytical model of the residual stress in the process of shot peening, the surface residual stress is calculated after shot peening, and mentioning the reason of errors occurred between calculated and experimental residual stresses, which is mainly caused by the measurement error of the shoot arc height. At the same time, micro hardness, microstructure and roughness in the precipitation-hardening layer of NAK80 steel before and after shot peening were measured and surveyed in order to obtain the relation between shot peening strength and surface quality in the precipitation-hardening layer. The results show that the surface quality of NAK80 steel is significantly improved by shot peening process. The over peening effect is produced when the shot peening intensity is too high,it is disadvantageous to improve sample's surface integrity, and leading to reduce the fatigue life. When arc high value of optimal shot peening is 0.40 mm,the surface quality is the best, and the depth of residual stress in the precipitation-hardening layer reaches to about 450 μm.Numerical calculation is very useful to define the process parameters when a specific residual stress profile is intended, either to quantify the benefits on a specific property like fatigue life or to help on modeling a forming process like shot peen forming. In particular, the proposed parameter optimization in the progress of shot peening and effective control of the surface texture provide new rules for the quantitative evaluations of shot peening surface modification of NAK80 steel. 展开更多

The symmetrical cell model is widely used to study the residual stress induced by shot peening. However, the correlation between the predicted residual stresses and the shot peening coverage, which is a big challenge for the researchers of the symmetrical cell model, is still not established. Based on the dynamic stresses and the residual stresses outputted from the symmetrical cell model, the residual stresses corresponding to full coverage are evalu- ated by normal distribution analysis. The predicted nodal dynamic stresses with respect to four corner points indicate that the equi-biaxial stress state exists only for the first shot impact. Along with the increase of shot number, the interactions of multiple shot impacts make the fluctuation of the nodal dynamic stresses about an almost identical value more and more obvious. The mean values and standard deviations of the residual stresses gradually tend to be stable with the increase of the number of shot peening series. The mean values at each corner point are almost the same after the third peening series, which means that an equi-biaxial stress state corresponding to the full coverage of shot peening is achieved. Therefore, the mean values of the nodal residual stresses with respect to a specific transverse cross-section below the peened surface can be used to correlate the measured data by X-ray. The predicted residual stress profile agrees with the experimental results very well under 200% peening coverage. An effective correlation method is proposed for the nodal residual stresses predicted by the symmetrical cell model and the shot peening coverage. 展开更多

A magnesium alloy AZ31 sheet was processed by ultrasonic shot peening treatment to fabricate a surface nanocrystalline, and a ball-on-disk dry sliding wear test was performed to evaluate the tribological behavior after treatment. The microstructure observation indicated a gradient nanocrystalline structure was formed after USSP treatment. The microhardness at the top surface was improved from 60 HV to 145 HV after treatment. The formed nanocrystalline resulted in an easy formation of MgO patches on the surface and reduced the coefficient of friction. Moreover, the formed nanocrystalline leaded to a retard of delamination with increasing the sliding speed and applied load, which was due to its stronger sub-surface.Under high sliding speed(0.5 m/s)and high applied load(50 N),it was firstly found that the formed nanocrystalline prevented the happening of thermal softening and melting. The possible reasons accounting for the prevention of thennal softening and melting were discussed accordingly. 展开更多

Conventional two-layered thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are prepared by electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) with ZrO2-8 wt% Y2O3 (8YSZ) as top coat and CoCrAlY as bond coat on disk-shaped Ni based super-alloy. In this paper, three kinds of shot peening process with different lengths of operating time were adopted for bond coating. As a result, changes took place in its surface roughness and the surface micro-hardness. A thermal cycling test at 1 273 Kx55 rain and another at room temperature for 5 min were performed to study the effects of shot peening process on the thermal cycling lifetime of TBCs. It is found that a moderate shot peening process will be able to prolong the life time. The oxidation dynamic of the as-processed TBCs basically accords with the parabolic rule, and the oxidation test also attests to the spallation between YSZ and thermal growth oxide (TGO) responsible mainly for the failure of TBCs. 展开更多

Ion beam enhanced deposition (IBED) was employed to increase the fretting fatigue resistance of Ti6AI4V. CrN and TiN hard coatings were applied on the base material and shot peening was combined with the hard coatings to study the duplex effect on fretting fatigue resistance. The IBED coatings exhibited a good bonding strength. They did not spall off even after shot peening. However, an optimum composition of CrN showed better fretting fatigue resistance than that of TiN with the same processing parameters. 展开更多

Before 1980s,the circular suspension spring in automobile subjected to torsion fatigue load, under the cyclic normal tensile stresses, the majority of fatigue fracture occurred was in normal tensile fracture mode(NTFM)and the fracture surface was under 45°diagonal.Because there exists the interaction between the residual stresses induced by shot peening and the applied cyclic normal tensile stresses in NTFM,which represents as"stress strengthening mechanism",shot peening technology could be used for improving the fatigue fracture resistance(FFR)of springs. However, since 1990s up to date,in addition to regular NTFM,the fatigue fractures occurred of peened springs from time to time are in longitudinal shear fracture mode(LSFM)or transverse shear fracture mode(TSFM)with the increase of applied cyclic shear stresses, which leads to a remarkable decrease of FFR.However,LSFM/TSFM can be avoided effectively by means of shot peening treatment again on the peened springs. The phenomena have been rarely happened before. At present there are few literatures concerning this problem.Based upon the results of force analysis of a spring, there is no interaction between the residual stresses by shot peening and the applied cyclic shear stresses in shear fracture. This;means that the effect of"stress strengthening mechanism"for improving the FFR of LSFM/TSFM is disappeared basically.During shot peening, however, both of residual stress and cyclic plastic deformed microstructure are induced synchronously like"twins"in the surface layer of a spring. It has been found for the first time by means of force analysis and experimental results that the modified microstructure in the"twins"as a"structure strengthening mechanism"can improve the FFR of LSFM/TSFM.At the same time,it is;also shown that the optimum technology of shot peening strengthening must have both"stress strengthening mechanism"and"structure strengthening mechanism"simultaneously so that the FFR of both NTFM and LSFM/TSFM can be improved by shot peening. 展开更多

The effect of shot peening(SP) on hydrogen embrittlement of high strength steel was investigated by electrochemical hydrogen charging, slow strain rate tensile tests, and hydrogen permeation tests. Microstructure observation, microhardness, and X-ray diffraction residual stress studies were also conducted on the steel. The results show that the shot peening specimens exhibit a higher resistance to hydrogen embrittlement in comparison with the no shot peening(NSP) specimens under the same hydrogen-charging current density. In addition, SP treatment sharply decreases the apparent hydrogen diffusivity and increases the subsurface hydrogen concentration. These findings are attributed to the changes in microstructure and compressive residual stress in the surface layer by SP. Scanning electron microscope fractographs reveal that the fracture surface of the NSP specimen exhibits the intergranular and quasi-cleavage mixed fracture modes, whereas the SP specimen shows only the quasi-cleavage fractures under the same hydrogen charging conditions, implying that the SP treatment delays the onset of intergranular fracture. 展开更多

Shot peening is a widely used surface treatment method by generating compressive residual stress near the surface of metallic materials to increase fatigue life and re- sistance to corrosion fatigue, cracking, etc. Compressive re- sidual stress and dent profile are important factors to eval- uate the effectiveness of shot peening process. In this pa- per, the influence of dimensionless parameters on maximum compressive residual stress and maximum depth of the dent were investigated. Firstly, dimensionless relations of pro- cessing parameters that affect the maximum compressive residual stress and the maximum depth of the dent were de- duced by dimensional analysis method. Secondly, the in- fluence of each dimensionless parameter on dimensionless variables was investigated by the finite element method. Fur- thermore, related empirical formulas were given for each di- mensionless parameter based on the simulation results. Fi- nally, comparison was made and good agreement was found between the simulation results and the empirical formula, which shows that a useful approach is provided in this pa- per for analyzing the influence of each individual parameter. 展开更多

The aim of the work was to find out how the modification of surface treatment and microstructures affect the fatigue characteristics of the considered sintered materials. Two different systems were prepared: as-sintered and shot peened prealloyed sintered (Astaloy CrL based) steels with addition of 0.5% and 0.7% C. Sintering was carried out in laboratory tube furnace in an atmosphere of pure gases 75%N2+25%H2. The sintering temperature was 1180℃ and sintering time was 60 min. Heating and cooling rates were 10℃/min. Fatigue tests were carried out in symmetric plane bending at stress ratio R=-1 with frequency of about 24 Hz. The presented experimental results showed that prealloyed water-atomised steels, with surface modification, exhibit positive effects on the fatigue failure resistance, and for that reason are suitable for high-performance applications. 展开更多

Shot peening is a widely used technique to improve fatigue life in metallic alloys. This processing technique introduces a subsurface compressive residual stress field through a plastic deformation of the surface caused by the impact of a large number of high-speed projectiles. There are a number of parameters that affect the residual stress field depth and magnitude. The effects of the impact angle, shot speed and shot geometry are currently being researched. In particular, substituting spherical cast shots by cylindrical cut wire shots is an attractive option, especially in terms of cost. The effect of shot geometry on residual stresses, however, needs to be further investigated.Because industrial-scale experimentation is costly and cumbersome, mathematical modeling offers a convenient alternative to carry out this type of research. The present work shows a comparison between the residual stresses generated by the impact of spherical and cylindrical projectiles on a steel substrate. This threedimensional model was developed using ABAQUS finite element commercial software(Release 6.12,Dassault Systémes,France). The results show that cylindrical shots generate residual stress fields t hat a re higher in magnitude than t hose generated by a spherical shot. However, the residual stress field of cylindrical shots impacting the surface at an oblique angle shows an important degree of asymmetry. This effect is not found when spherical shots impact the surface at the same oblique angle. 展开更多

In this paper,a progressive approach to predict the multiple shot peening process parameters for complex integral panel is proposed.Firstly, the invariable parameters in the forming process including shot size, mass flow, peening distance and peening angle are determined according to the empirical and machine type. Then, the optimal value of air pressure for the whole shot peening is selected by the experimental data. Finally, the feeding speed for every shot peening path is predicted by regression equation. The integral panel part with thickness from 2 mm to 5 mm and curvature radius from 3200 mm to 16000 mm is taken as a research object, and four experiments are conducted. In order to design specimens for acquiring the forming data, one experiment is conducted to compare the curvature radius of the plate and stringer-structural specimens, which were peened along the middle of the two stringers. The most striking finding of this experiment is that the outer shape error range is below 3.9%,so the plate specimens can be used in predicting feeding speed of the integral panel. The second experiment is performed and results show that when the coverage reaches the limit of 80%,the minimum feeding speed is 50 mm/s.By this feeding speed, the forming curvature radius of the specimens with different thickness from the third experiment is measured and compared with the research object, and the optimal air pressure is 0.15 MPa.Then, the plate specimens with thickness from 2 mm to 5 mm are peened in the fourth experiment, and the measured curvature radius data are used to calculate the feeding speed of different shot peening path by regressive analysis method. The algorithm is validated by forming a test part and the average deviation is 0.496 mm.It is shown that the approach can realize the forming of the integral panel precisely. 展开更多

Using a modified 3D random representative volume(RV)finite element model, the effects of model dimensions(impact region and interval between impact and representative regions),model shapes(rectangular, square, and circular),and peening-induced thermal softening on resultant critical quantities(residual stress,Almen intensity, coverage, and arc height)after shot peening are systematically examined.A new quantity,i.e.,the interval between impact and representative regions,is introduced and its optimal value is first determined to eliminate any boundary effect on shot peening results. Then, model dimensions are respectively assessed for all model shapes to reflect the actual shot peening process, based on which shape-independent critical shot peening quantities are obtained.Further,it is found that thermal softening of the target material due to shot peening leads to variances of the surface residual stress and arc height, demonstrating the necessity of considering the thermal effect in a constitutive material model of shot peeing. Our study clarifies some of the finite element modeling aspects and lays the ground for accurate modeling of the SP process. 展开更多

A new technology-rotationally accelerated shot peening(RASP), was developed to prepare gradient structured materials. By using centrifugal acceleration principle and large steel balls, the RASP technology can produce much higher impact energy compared to conventional shot peening. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, the RASP was utilized to refine the surface layer in pure copper(Cu) with an average grain size of 85 nm. The grain size increases largely from surface downwards the bulk, forming an800 ?m thick gradient-structured surface layer and consequently a micro-hardness gradient. The difference between the RASP technology and other established techniques in preparing gradient structured materials is discussed. The effects of shot peening(SP) and plasma electrolytic oxidation(PEO) on the intergranular corrosion behavior of the novel high strength aluminum alloy 7A85(AA 7A85) were investigated by electrochemical polarization and electrochemical impedance tests. The intergranular corrosion mechanism of SP,PEO and PEO combined with sealingtreated AA 7A85 was studied by the metallographic analysis, residual stress testing,X-ray diffractometer analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that AA 7A85-T7452 is very sensitive to intergranular corrosion.SP would significantly improve its intergranular corrosion resistance. This is attributed to the combination action of residual compressive stress and grain refinement.PEO would reduce the largest corrosion depth by 41.6%.Moreover,PEO without sealing did not eliminate the intergranular corrosion due to the existence of the micropores and microcracks in the oxide coating. However,PEO combined with the SiO2sol–gel sealing treatment could effectively protect the AA 7A85-T7452 from intergranular corrosion because of the good corrosion resistance and barrier function of the sealed coating. 展开更多
