This study delves into the intricate relationship between iron(Fe)content in kaolinite and its impact on the adsorption behavior of sodium oleate. The effects of different iron concentrations on adsorption energy, hydrogen bond kinetics and adsorption efficiency were studied through simulation and experimental verification. The results show that the presence of iron in the kaolinite structure significantly improves the adsorption capacity of sodium oleate.Kaolinite samples with high iron content have better adsorption properties, lower adsorption energy levels and shorter and stronger hydrogen bonds than pure kaolinite. The optimal concentration of oleic acid ions for achieving maximum adsorption efficiency was identified as 1.2 mmol/L across different kaolinite samples. At this concentration, the adsorption rates and capacities reach their peak, with Fe-enriched kaolinite samples exhibiting notably higher flotation recovery rates. This optimal concentration represents a balance between sufficient oleic acid ion availability for surface interactions and the prevention of self-aggregation phenomena that could hinder adsorption. This study offers promising avenues for optimizing the flotation process in mineral processing applications. 展开更多

Effects of stirring speed and time, pH and sodium oleate concentration on the shear hydrophobic flocculation of ultrafine Anshan hematite with sodium oleate as the surfactant were discussed. The results show that these parameters significantly affect the shear hydrophobic flocculation of ultrafine hematite. The optimum conditions for the flocculation are: stirring speed 1 400 r/min, flocculation time 20 min, pH 9 and sodium oleate concentration 3.94×10-4 mol/L; the flotation recovery of hematite flocs is remarkably high compared with non flocculated ultrafine hematite. According to the extended DLVO theory, the total interaction potential of Anshan ultrafine hematite was determined. The calculation results indicate that the hydrophobic flocculation state of the ultrafine hematite-sodium oleate system is mainly dominated by electric double layer repulsive interaction potential and hydrophobic interaction potential. A mechanical agitation is required to impart particles a kinetic energy to overcome potential barrier between them due to the existence of electric double layer repulsive interaction potential. Those particles further approach to form flocs due to the significant increase of the hydrophobic interaction potential. 展开更多

Temperature affects the flotation of quartz in the calcium/sodium oleate(Na OL)system, while there is a lack of understanding of its potential mechanism. Therefore,in this work, the flotation response of quartz to temperature was investigated via micro-flotation experiments, interface property analyses, and theoretical calculations.Flotation results demonstrated that increasing temperature contributed to higher flotation recovery of quartz, which enhanced the removal of quartz from hematite.Surface tension results revealed that higher temperatures lowered the critical micelle concentration(CMC)and surface tension of the Na OL solution, and thus enhanced its surface activity.Solution chemistry calculations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)measurements confirmed that the increased content of Ca(OH)+achieved by increasing temperatures enhanced the adsorption amounts of calcium species(acting as activation sites)on the quartz surface.Dynamic light scattering(DLS)measurements verified that the association degree of RCOOàto form(RCOO)22àwas strengthened.Furthermore, adsorption density measurements and molecular dynamics(MD)simulations confirmed that increasing the temperature facilitated Na OL adsorption toward the surface of the quartz, which was attributed to the stronger interaction between Na OL and the calcium-activated quartz surface at higher temperatures. As a result, quartz flotation was improved by increasing temperatures.Accordingly,a possible adsorption model was proposed. 展开更多

The effect of dolomite with different particle size fractions on hematite flotation was studied using sodium oleate as collector at p H of about 9. The effect mechanism of dolomite on hematite flotation was investigated by means of solution chemistry, ultraviolet spectrophotometry(UV), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry(ICP-AES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). It is observed that dolomite with different size fractions has depressing effect on hematite flotation using sodium oleate as collector, and dolomite could be the "mineral depressant" of hematite using sodium oleate as collector. The reasons for that are concerned with sodium oleate consumption and the adsorption onto hematite of dissolved species of dolomite. 展开更多

The influence of pulp temperature on the floatability and adsorption behavior of fine wolframite with sodium oleate was investigated by microflotation experiments, electric conductivity tests, adsorption measurements, and FT-IR analysis. Microflotation results show that fine wolframite with sodium oleate exhibits a good floatability at pH 8–9. Electric conductivity tests indicate that the high temperature enhances the ionization degree and electric mobility of oleate species, then the flotation recovery of fine wolframite and the adsorption amount of sodium oleate are observed to increase with the rise in pulp temperature. The results of adsorption experiments are found to meet Freundlich isotherms successfully, and the isosteric enthalpy (ΔH^Θ) is in conformity with the chemical bonding. The changes in FT-IR analysis provide sufficient evidence that sodium oleate interacts with the metal cations of wolframite surface, and the increase in pulp temperature clearly promotes the chemisorption intensity. These findings will be beneficial to strengthen the flotation behavior of fine wolframite. 展开更多

The carboxyl terminal of sodium oleate has a stronger polarity than that of oleic acid;this terminal is more likely to be dipole polarized and ionically conductive in a microwave field.Sodium oleate was used as the model compound to study the decarboxylation of oleic acid leading to hydrocarbon formation via microwave-assisted pyrolysis technology. The pyrolysis gas, liquid, and solid products were precisely analyzed to deduce the mechanism for decarboxylation of sodium oleate.Microwave energy was able to selectively heat the carboxyl terminal of sodium oleate.During decarboxylation, the double bond in the long hydrocarbon chain formed a p-πconjugated system with the carbanion intermediate. The resulting p-πconjugated system was more stable and beneficial to the pyrolysis reaction(decarboxylation, terminal allylation, isomerization, and aromatization). The physical properties of pyrolysis liquid were generally similar to those of diesel fuel, thereby demonstrating the possible use of microwaves for controlling the decarboxylation of sodium oleate in order to manufacture renewable hydrocarbon fuels. 展开更多

The effects of carbonate minerals(dolomite and siderite) on the flotation of hematite using sodium oleate as a collector were investigated through flotation tests, supplemented by dissolution measurements, solution chemistry calculations, zeta-potential measurements, Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopic studies, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) analyses. The results of flotation tests show that the presence of siderite or dolomite reduced the recovery of hematite and that the inhibiting effects of dolomite were stronger. Dissolution measurements, solution chemistry calculations, and flotation tests confirmed that both the cations(Ca^(2+) and Mg^(2+)) and CO_3^(2+)ions dissolved from dolomite depressed hematite flotation, whereas only the 23CO-ions dissolved from siderite were responsible for hematite depression. The zeta-potential, FTIR spectroscopic, and XPS analyses indicated that Ca^(2+), Mg^(2+), and CO_3^(2-)(HCO_3^-) could adsorb onto the hematite surface, thereby hindering the adsorption of sodium oleate, which was the main reason for the inhibiting effects of carbonate minerals on hematite flotation. 展开更多

Common rare earth(RE) minerals, such as bastnasite and monazite, may be formed in deposits associated with carbonate gangue, such as calcite and dolomite. Sodium oleate is a widely used collector for the flotation of both RE and gangue minerals, which might, therefore, be an inefficient process due to the lack of selectivity of this collector. Since these minerals are also sparingly soluble in solution, they could release their constituent ions into the solution, which could affect the floatability of other minerals. In this study, the interactions of sodium oleate with bastnasite and monazite in the presence of dissolved dolomite species have been investigated. Microflotation tests were carried out to explore the effects of these dissolved species on the floatability of the RE minerals. Zeta potential measurements and XPS characterization were carried out to understand how the species affect the collector adsorption. To complement these characterizations, density functional theory(DFT) simulations were conducted to investigate the collector-mineral and collector-adsorbed species(on the mineral surface) interactions. The results show that collector-dolomite interaction energy is greater than that of collector-adsorbed species, but lower than collector-monazite interaction energy, explaining the decrease in the minerals' recovery upon exposure to the dissolved mineral species. It is also shown that oleate ions(OI^-) have the strongest interaction with the minerals compared to other oleate species such as acid soap(HOI_2^-) and oleate dimer(OI_2^(2-)). The behavior(strength and selectivity) of sodium oleate towards RE minerals and dolomite, as compared to other RE mineral collectors(such as aromatic hydroxamate), is attributed mainly to the collector's and the minerals' structure. The long hydrocarbon chain of sodium oleate which imparts hydrophobic characteristic to the minerals, makes it stronger collector than benzohydroxamate. Moreover, sodium oleate(with linear structure), unlike the aromatic hydroxamate, can approach the mineral easier due to lesser steric hindrance effect and higher reactivity of 0 involved in the interaction, making it less selective. In addition, it can interact easily with dolomite due to the presence of more exposed active sites than RE minerals. 展开更多

Abstract We report on the rheological behavior of wormlike micelles constructed by ionic liquid surfactant [Csmim]Br (1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide) and anionic surfactant sodium oleate (NaOA) in aqueous solution. The effects of surfactant composition, total surfactant concentration, added salts, and temperature were investigated. The prevailing surfactant effect at lower concentration and the leading cosolvent effect at higher concentration of [Csmim]Br may be the main reasons for appearance of well-established maximum in key rheologi- cal parameters with variation of surfactant composition and total surfactant concentration. The Cole-Cole plots demon- strate that the systems (total surfactant concentration falls within 0.17-0.35 mol. L- 1 and molar ratio 0.33≤R ≤ 0.50) fit the Maxwell's mechanical model as linear viscoelastic fluid. The addition of NaBr or sodium salicylate decreases significantly the viscosity and the relaxation time of the wormlike micelle solution but cannot change the value of plateau modulus Go. The present system has low rheological tolerance to temperature. The increase of temperature decreases the average contour length and viscosity of wormlike micelles and thus strengthens the relaxation progress of diffusion and weakens the relaxation progress of reptation. Increasing the temperature also decreases the value of plateau modulus G0 and shifts the minimum value of the loss modulus G″min to higher frequencies. 展开更多

In the lamellar liquid crystallization (LLC) phase of NaOL/ OLA/H2O system, the small angle X-ray diffraction measurements show that the oleic add is solubilized in the oil layer at first and men into the amphiphile layer. The octadiene added is also located partly in the oil layer and partly in the amphiphile layer in the LLC. With the addition of octadiene as cross-linking agent, roe LLC phase of NaOL/OLA/H2O system was polymerized under the initiation of AIBN with the protection of pure nitrogen at 60°C. Most of the double bond absorption of the monomers in IR spectra disappeared after polymerization. The polymerization takes place not only in the middle of the amphiphile layer between the double bonds of NaOL or OLA and those of octadiene, but also in the oil layer of LLC between the double bonds of OLA and those of octadiene. Interlayer spacing measurements on the copolymer proved d values decreased by about 1 - 2 nm compared with those of the corresponding system before the polymerization, indicating a disruption of the ordered structure by the polymerization. The copolymer still has superior surface activity with the critical micellar concentration (CMC) decreased almost to the half of the value for the system before the polymerization. 展开更多

Effects of size distribution (particle size and content of fine fraction (<10μm)) on scheelite flotation were studied using flotation tests and theoretical calculations. The results show that particle size influences the scheelite recovery and the performance of combined reagents. The scheelite recovery is lowered by adding fine particles (<10μm) into the pulp containing coarse particles. Extended DLVO (EDLVO) theory confirms that the fine fractions (<10μm) could interface with the coarse fractions. The interaction energy and fluid forces are relative to the particle size, which might explain why the fine fractions influence the scheelite flotation. The highest recovery of scheelite using combined reagents as collector and optimum ratio of combined reagents were determined by scheelite particle size and reagent performance. However, the optimum adding order was only determined by reagent performance, which has nothing to do with particle size. 展开更多

A novel mixed collector (BHOA) was prepared by mixing benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) and sodium oleate (NaOL) and applied to the flotation separation of smithsonite from dolomite. Flotation results showed that NaOL alone had good collecting performance on smithsonite and common gangue mineral dolomite but had poor selectivity. By using a BHA/NaOL mixed system with a molar ratio of 2:1, the recoveries of smithsonite and dolomite reached approximately 90% and 5%, respectively. Surface tension analysis showed that the surface activity of BHOA was a little higher than that of a single NaOL because of synergistic effects. Zeta potential and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements indicated that surfactants BHA and NaOL co-absorbed on the smithsonite surface and only NaOL was present on the dolomite surface in the presence of BHOA. 展开更多

Reverse flotation technology is one of the most efficient ways to improve the quality and reduce impurity of iron concentrate. Mineral processors dealing with hematite face a challenge that the flotation results of reverse flotation of hematite are poor in presence of siderite using fatty acid as collector, starch as depressant of iron minerals and calcium ion as activator of quartz at strong alkaline pH. In this work, the effect of siderite on reverse anionic flotation of quartz from hematite was investigated. The effect mechanism of siderite on reverse flotation of hematite was studied by solution chemistry, ultraviolet spectrophotometry(UV) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR). It was observed that siderite had strong depressive effect on quartz in flotation using sodium oleate as collector, corn starch as depressant of iron minerals and calcium chloride as activator of quartz at strong alkaline pH. The starch was adsorbed onto calcium carbonate by chemical reaction which was formed by CO^(2-)_3 from siderite dissolution and Ca^(2+) from calcium chloride as activator of quartz and precipitated on the surface of quartz, which resulted in improving the hydrophilic ability of quartz. 展开更多

The effect of conventional thermal pretreatment on the surface properties of ilmenite and its accompanied gangue minerals was investigated using flotation experiments(microflotation and laboratory cell flotation),XRD,XPS and FT-IR analysis and zeta potential and contact angle measurements. After treatment at 600℃ for 25 min as optimal condition, the floatability of ilmenite is improved from 73.5%to 91%at a pH value of 6.3.As demonstrated by XRD and XPS analysis, under this pretreatment condition, the Fe^(3+)content increases by almost 16.5%without any phase decomposition and structural changes in ilmenite.FT-IR analysis and contact angle and zeta potential measurements give evidences that the improvement of ilmenite floatability can be related to the enhancement of collector adsorption and the formation of a more insoluble hydrophobic layer of ferric iron oleate. The ore flotation experiments show that the thermal pretreatment process without making a significant change in TiO2 content of ilmenite concentrate enhances the TiO2 recovery from 65.4%to 73.7%. 展开更多

In this contribution the influence of chemically synthesized magnetite particles coated by sodium oleate and PEG (MPEG), and magnetosomes (MS) was gradually tested on the process of phagocytosis and the metabolic activity (lysozyme and peroxidase activity) in leukocyte. Lysozyme activity is oxygen-independent liquidation mechanisms of engulfed microorganism, peroxidase activity is oxygen-dependent one. The both tested samples MS and MPEG lysed leukocyte cells during incubation. MPEG with concentration 10 and 20 μg/mL lysed almost all leukocytes and their cell viability was in the 14 ± 0.05% range. On the other hand, MS begin to influence leukocytes activity at the concentration of 1 μg/mL and this influence grows with increasing concentration up to 20 μg/mL. MS are more suitable for biological applications than MPEG which are more aggressive material than MS and their using is unavailable for these types of the test mainly for the concentration 10 - 20 μg/mL. 展开更多
