The giant Central Asian Orogenic Belt is an extensive accretionary orogen,of which the Solonker suture,as a major regional suture, coincides closely with an early Permian paleobiogeographical boundary. This suture is considered to mark the location of the final closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean between the North China Craton and the Mongolian Terrane.Although the closure time of the Paleo-Asian Ocean along the Solonker suture has generally been regarded as Late Permian-Early Triassic, uncertainty remains because of a lack of typical collisionrelated features(e.g.,high-grade regional metamorphism and well-developed fold-thrust structures)and a scarcity of outcrops. The present study reports Early Permian foliated gabbros and dikes(288-275 Ma)and Middle-Late Permian undeformed layered gabbros, strongly peraluminous granites, and I-type granites(265-254 Ma)in the Xinhure area along the northern margin of the North China Craton. The Early Permian foliated intrusions have a subduction-related geochemical signature and were derived from partial melting of lithospheric mantle modified by subduction-related melts or fluids at the active margin of the North China Craton. In contrast, the Late Permian undeformed layered gabbros and strongly peraluminous granites were derived from partial melting of lithospheric mantle and middle-upper crust, respectively, triggered by asthenospheric upwelling. Therefore,a transition from an end-compressional to an extensional environment according to a transition from collision termination to postcollision of the North China Craton and Mongolian Terrane may have occurred between 275 Ma and 262 Ma.This time span can be considered as the final closure time of the Paleo-Asian Ocean along the Solonker suture. 展开更多

There are strong interactions between the crust and the mantle in the Abaga area.To study the structure of the crust and upper mantle in that area, the fundamental-mode Rayleigh-wave phase velocity dispersion along 3,331 inter-station paths were estimated by the continuous wavelet transformation method. The dispersion data were used to construct the first 2-D phase velocity maps for waves with periods of 12-80 s and a horizontal resolution of 0.5°×0.5°by applying a linear inversion. The results show that the short-period phase velocity distributions(12-20 s)are affected by exposed Cenozoic volcanoes and the thickness of the sedimentary layer.Phase velocity maps for waves with periods of 30-40 s indicate that the direction of the Solonker suture zone is in good agreement with the extension of the high-speed anomalous connection in the study area.It is concluded that the Solonker suture zone extends throughout the entire lithosphere. For periods of 30-80 s,stable low-velocity anomalies were observed near the Holocene volcanoes in the northeast and south of the study area, suggesting that the low-velocity anomaly is related to volcanic activity. Moreover, the two low-velocity anomalies may be connected, suggesting that the Darigan Volcano may have the same thermal source as the Honggeertu Volcano and even the Datong Volcano. And the thermal source of the two low-velocity anomalies is speculated to be upwelling of hot mantle material. In addition, the velocities in the crust and upper mantle are lower than those from the AK 135 model and are close to the velocity for the destroyed North China Craton, and very similar to that for the East African Rift Valley. This may indicate that the lithospheric structure in the Abaga area is active. 展开更多

The Linxi Formation occupies an extensive area in the eastern Inner Mongolia in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). The Linxi Formation is composed of slate, siltstone, sandstone and plant, lamellibranch microfossils in the associated strata. Major and trace element data (including REE) for sandstones from the formation indicate that these rocks have a greywacke protolith and have been deposited during a strong tectonic activity. LA-ICPMS U-Pb dating of detrital zircons yield ages of 1801 to 238 Ma for four samples from the Linxi Formation. 425-585 Ma, together with the ~500 Ma age for the metamorphism event previously determined for Northeast China, indicates that their provenance is the metamorphic rocks of Pan-African age that have a tectonic affinity to NE China. A few older zircons with U-Pb ages at 1689-1801 Ma, 1307 1414 Ma, 593-978 Ma are also present, revealing the Neoproterozoic history of NE China. The youngest population shows a peak at ca. 252 Ma, suggesting that the main deposition of the Linxi Formation was at late Permain. Moreover, the ca. 250 Ma zircon grains of all four samples yield weighted mean ^206pb/^238U ages of 250 ± 3 Ma, 248 ± 3 Ma, 249 ± 3 Ma, and 250 ± 2 Ma, respectively. These ages, together with the youngest zircon age in the sample ZJB-28 (ca. 238 Ma), suggest that the deposition of the Linxi Formation extended to the early Triassic. Combining with previous results, we suggest that the final collision of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) in the southern of Linxi Formation, which located in the Solonker-Xra Moron-Changchun suture, and the timing for final collision should be at early Triassic. 展开更多
