Procurement Method Selection for Building Maintenance Projects: The Case of Malaysian Public Universities

The purpose of this paper is to implement and validate a decision making framework for building maintenance projects. The growing importance of maintenance sector not only in Malaysia but al- so increasingly globalized, the difficulty in selecting an appropriate procurement method and lack of research in this area provide an impetus for this research. There were 19 procurement selection criteria identified. In addition, there were 4 types of procurements methods which include outsourcing by specialist term contract, outsourcing by tendered schedule term contract, out- sourcing by repair and maintenance contract and outsourcing by measured term contract identified to be the most popular procurement methods adapted by public universities currently and at the same time were considered most important. The decision making framework was developed based on AHP technique and principles. Expert Choice Software was employed as development tool where the criteria and alternatives were integrated into the framework. Finally, structured interview was conducted to validate the framework developed. The validation process was carried out through structured interview with selected public university.

Analysis of the Potential Value and Improvement of Gray Space in University Buildings: A Case Study of the New Campus of Hebei University of Engineering

As one of the more important spatial forms,"gray space" has the function of communicating indoor and outdoor spaces and enriching the spatial hierarchy.Taking the new campus of Hebei University of Engineering as an example,the paper demonstrates the potential value of gray space in university buildings combined with actual investigations and data research.Moreover,appropriate improvement methods are put forward,in order to make full use of gray space to facilitate the communication between teachers and students,to create a more humanistic caring and learning atmosphere of university campus,and to bring more diversified and rich learning and communication places to university students.

How to Build the Management Mode for the Gymnasiums in Ordinary Universities in China

Integrating Universal Design Standards and Building Information Modeling at the Conceptual Design Stage of Buildings

A projection of the Canadian population shows that in 2024 one in five Canadians will be over 65 years old. This shift forces designers to consider the entire lifetime of occupants during the design of new buildings. Universal Design (UD), which is a design that accommodates all people to the greatest extent possible and aging in place design that is deeply rooted in the principles of UD, aim to house people irrespective of their age, ability, and chronic health conditions. Building Information Modeling (BIM) significantly helps advance the development of the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry in a more collaborative and automated way. Integrating BIM and UD allows designers to incorporate UD standards easily and efficiently at the conceptual design stage of buildings by using the functionalities and capabilities of BIM tools. Therefore, this study presents the development of an automated computer model to facilitate the adoption of UD standards and processes. The novelty highlighted in this model resides in the creation of an automated method that employs a newly created plug-in and databases to assist designers to incorporate UD standards at the conceptual stage in a timely and cost-effective manner. Furthermore, the study introduces the methodology consisting of collecting, categorizing, and storing data from various universal design and accessible design guidelines in the developed databases and developing new plug-ins in BIM tool to link the developed databases in order to automate the process of retrieving necessary information and components to help designers and owners select optimal design alternatives based on their predefined criteria.

Feasibility of condensate water recycle of split air handling unit in Chinese University buildings

Recycling the condensate water of the air conditioner could be explored as an alternative water source to con-tribute to building the green campus.This paper explored the condensate water production through actual mea-surement based on a split air handling unit(SAHU)in a university building.Then,the statistical analysis was used to analyze the recycling feasibility and the impact factors of the condensate water production in 31 Chinese provincial capital cities to obtain the recycling potential map of the condensate water generated from a SAHU.Results showed that:(1)In the measurement,the amount of condensate water produced by a single split air conditioner was 1.6 kg from 12:40 to 13:40.Therefore,the daily output of condensate water of the air condi-tioner with the university operation schedule could reach 52.99 kg during the main air-conditioning season.(2)Among the 31 provincial capital cities in China,the largest condensate water outputs could be found in the Hot Summer and Warm Winter zone and the Hot Summer and Cold Winter zone,with an average monthly output of 1600 kg and 1100 kg,respectively.(3)Regression analysis showed that the dry-bulb temperature and dew point temperature of outdoor air had the highest positive and significant influence on condensate water production.The objective of this study is to provide theoretical guidance for the design and energy conservation evaluation of the feasibility of SAHU condensate water recycling in universities.

Barriers to the Adoption of BOT Contracts System for Infrastructural Development of Technical Universities in Ghana

The study was conducted with the aim of exploring the barriers to the adoption of BOT contract systems for infrastructural development of technical universities in Ghana. In an empirical questionnaire survey with professionals and experts in the construction and education sector, the respondents were invited to rate their perception on the barriers to the adoption of the BOT contracts systems. An interview session to satisfy ways of adopting the BOT contracts for infrastructural development in technical universities was conducted with selected professionals. The study revealed that the major barriers to the adoption of the BOT contract system are: delays in approval, corruption, reliability and credit worthiness of entities and expropriation. The study suggested that detailed policy or framework for implementing BOT contracts;proper planning by technical universities;and adequate protection for lenders is required for successful BOT implementation. Therefore there is a need to explore this concept, using adequate policy initiatives, proper measures and support from government to improve on the proper implementation of the BOT contracts in Technical Universities in Ghana.

互联网时代高校教学改革研究——以建筑材料课程为例

建筑材料课程具有理论与实践并重、知识点多且专等特点,建筑材料课程对学生的要求在不断地提高,要求学生既能够理解知识又能够应用及解决工程实际问题。但目前的大多数建筑材料课程结构、课程内容上缺乏系统、深入的研究,普遍存在课程设置不够科学、教材部分知识内容陈旧等弊端。该文经过调查研究及教师任教体会深刻剖析高等学校建筑材料课程的现状,指出目前存在的问题和需改进之处。以互联网为工具,提出建立建筑材料实践教学体系、建立课外网络平台、鼓励学生参加科研项目、改变现有课程考核方式及建立国际化平台等五个方面的建议和措施,最后对教学改革效果进行系统总结。该文对于应用型本科建筑材料课程的教学改革具有一定指导作用。

河南理工大学(北校区)校园空间形态变迁及历史建筑解析

河南理工大学①创办于1909年,其前身焦作路矿学堂是英商福公司出资创办的一所私立大学。本文通过梳理学校各个时期的校报、校志以及河南理工大学史,结合实地调研、测绘,从空间形态变迁、历史建筑两个方面得出:中华人民共和国成立之前,校园规划形成教学行政区与学生住宿区分隔,且教学区为美国典型的“Mall”式三合院形态;中华人民共和国成立至改革开放期间,学校重在通过合并院校增加校园面积;改革开放后,校园建设速度加快,形成了新的以工程馆(今校史馆)为中心的东西轴线和以一号教学楼为中心的南北轴线,校园呈现出以教学行政区居中,学生宿舍区和教学区环绕行政区的规划布局形式。校园历史建筑工程馆、理化实验室和科学馆立面比例均衡,突出轴线对称,门窗采用半圆券洞,具有鲜明的西方古典主义建筑元素。
