The corrosion behavior of 316H stainless steel(SS)in the impure and purified Na Cl–KCl–Mg Cl_(2) salt was investigated at700°C.Results indicate that the main deleterious impurity induced corrosion in the impure salt was the absorbed moisture,present in the form of Mg Cl_(2)·6H_(2)O.316H SS occurred severe intergranular corrosion with a corrosion depth of 130μm for1000 h in the impure Na Cl–KCl–Mg Cl_(2) salt.In contrast,the purification treatment of molten chloride salt by the dissolved Mg metal can remove the absorbed moisture,and the corresponding reactions were also discussed.As a result,the corrosiveness of Na Cl–KCl–Mg Cl_(2) salt is reduced significantly.316H SS occurred slight uniform corrosion with a depth of less than 5μm for 3000 h in the purified Na Cl–KCl–Mg Cl_(2) salt. 展开更多

Bipolar electrochemistry is used to produce a linear potential gradient across a bipolar electrode(BPE),providing direct access to the anodic and cathodic reactions under a wide range of applied potentials.The occurrence of pitting corrosion,crevice corrosion,and general corrosion on type 2205 duplex stainless steel(DSS 2205)BPE has been observed at room temperature.The critical pit depth of 10-20μm with a55%-75% probability of pits developing into stable pits at potential from+0.9 to+1.2 V vs.OCP(open circuit potential)are measured.All pit nucleation sites are either within ferritic grains or at the interface between austenite and ferrite.The critical conditions for pitting and crevice corrosion are discussed with Epit(critical pitting potential)and Ecre(critical crevice potential)decreasing from 0.87 and 0.80 V vs.OCP after150 s of exposure to 0.84 and 0.76 V vs.OCP after 900 s of exposure,respectively.Pit growth kinetics under different applied bipolar potentials and exposure times have been obtained.The ferrite is shown to be more susceptible to general dissolution. 展开更多

Pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion behaviors of high nitrogen austenitic stainless steels (HNSS) were investigated by electrochemical and immersion testing methods in chloride solution, respectively. The chemical constitution and composition in the depth of passive films formed on HNSS were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS). HNSS has excellent pitting and crevice corrosion resistance compared to 316L stainless steel. With increasing the nitrogen content in steels, pitting potentials and critical pitting temperature (CPT) increase, and the maximum, average pit depths and average weight loss decrease. The CPT of HNSS is correlated with the alloying element content through the measure of alloying for resistance to corrosion (MARC). The MARC can be expressed as an equation of CPT=2.55MARC-29. XPS results show that HNSS exhibiting excellent corrosion resistance is attributed to the enrichment of nitrogen on the surface of passive films, which forms ammonium ions increasing the local pH value and facilitating repassivation, and the synergistic effects of molybdenum and nitrogen. 展开更多

Duplex stainless steels(DSSs)used in subsea structures and desalination industries require high corrosion and erosion resistance as well as excellent mechanical properties.The newly introduced cast duplex grade ASTM A8907 A has a unique composition and is expected to have a much better resistance to corrosion and erosion compared with the super-duplex grades 5 A and 6 A.This work is a comparative study of the mechanical properties,corrosion,and erosion-corrosion resistance of super-duplex grades 5 A and 6 A and the hyper-duplex grade 7 A.The three DSSs exhibited equiaxial austenite islands in the ferrite matrix and balanced phase ratios.The hardness of the grade 7 A was nearly 15%higher than those of the super-duplex grades,which is attributed to the effect of the higher contents of W and Mn in 7 A.The impact toughness of grade 7 A was found to be lower than those of the super-duplex grades due to the carbide precipitation resulting from the partial substitution of Mo with W.The oxide layer strengthening effect of rare earth elements and the higher pitting resistance equivalent number(PREN)of grade7 A resulted in higher corrosion resistance.The harder and more passive grade 7 A showed a 35%lower material loss during erosion-corrosion. 展开更多

Stress corrosion cracking(SCC) is the main corrosion failure mode... 310S is an austenitic stainless steel for high temperature applications, having strong resistance of oxidation, hydrogen embrittlement and corrosion. Stress corrosion cracking(SCC) is the main corrosion failure mode for 310S stainless steel. Past researched about SCC of 310S primarily focus on the corrosion mechanism and influence of temperature and corrosive media, but few studies concern the combined influence of temperature, pressure and chloride. on SCC of 310S stainless steel, prepared samples are investigated via For a better understanding of temperature and pressure's effects slow strain rate tensile test(SSRT) in different temperature and pressure in NACE A solution. The result shows that the SCC sensibility indexes of 310S stainless steel increase with the rise of temperature and reach maximum at 10MPa and 160~C, increasing by 22.3% compared with that at 10 MPa and 80 ℃. Instead, the sensibility decreases with the pressure up. Besides, the fractures begin to transform from the ductile fracture to the brittle fracture with the increase of temperature. 310S stainless steel has an obvious tendency of stress corrosion at 10MPa and 160℃ and the fracture surface exists cleavage steps, river patterns and some local secondary cracks, having obvious brittle fracture characteristics. The SCC cracks initiate from inclusions and tiny pits in the matrix and propagate into the matrix along the cross section gradually until rupture. In particular, the oxygen and chloride play an important role on the SCC of 310S stainless steel in NACE A solution. The chloride damages passivating film, causing pitting corrosion, concentrating in the cracks and accelerated SSC ultimately. The research reveals the combined influence of temperature, pressure and chloride on the SCC of 310S, which can be a guide to the application of 310S stainless steel in super-heater tube. 展开更多

Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of stainless steels and Ni-based alloys in high temperature water coolant is one of the key problems affecting the safe operation of nuclear power plants (NPPs). The nitrogen-added stainless steel is a kind of possible candidate materials for mitigating SCC since reducing the carbon content and adding nitrogen to offset the loss in strength caused by the decrease in carbon content can mitigate the problem of sensitization. However, the reports of SCC of nitrogen-added stainless steels in high temperature water are few available. The effects of applied potential and sensitization treatment on the SCC of a newly developed nitrogen-containing stainless steel (SS) 316LN in high temperature water doped with chloride at 250 ℃ were studied by using slow strain rate tests (SSRTs). The SSRT results are compared with our data previously published for 316 SS without nitrogen and 304NG SS with nitrogen, and the possible mechanism affecting the SCC behaviors of the studied steels is also discussed based on SSRT and microstucture analysis results. The susceptibility to cracking of 316LN SS normally increases with increasing potential. The susceptibility to SCC of 316LN SS was less than that of 316 SS and 304NG SS. Sensitization treatment at 700℃ for 30 h showed little effect on the S CC of 316LN S S and significant effect on the S CC of 316 S S. The predominant cracking mode for the 316LN S S in both annealed state and the state after the sensitization treatment was transgranular. The presented conditions of mitigating stress corrosion cracking are some useful information for the safe use of 316LN SS in NPPs. 展开更多

The intergranular corrosion (IGC) behavior of high nitrogen austenitic stainless steel (HNSS) sensitization treated at 650-950℃ was investigated by the double loop electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation (DL-EPR) method. The effects of the electrolytes, scan rate, sensitizing temperature on the susceptibility to IGC of HNSS were examined. The results show that the addi-tion of NaCl is an effective way to improve the formation of the cracking of a passive film in chromium-depleted zones during the reactivation scan. Decreasing the scan rate exhibits an obvious effect on the breakdown of the passive film. A solution with 2 mol/L H2SO4+1 mol/L NaCl+0.01 mol/L KSCN is suitable to check the susceptibility to IGC of HNSS at a sensitizing temperature of 650-950℃ at a suitable scan rate of 1.667 mV/s. Chromium depletion of HNSS is attributed to the precipitation of Cr2N which results in the susceptibility to IGC. The synergistic effect of Mo and N is suggested to play an important role in stabilizing the passive film to prevent the attack of IGC. 展开更多

Emphasis was put on the dissolution of chromium and nickel from the stainless steels by atmospheric corrosion and rain runoff. AAS analyses shows that the amounts of yearly chromium and nickel dissolution were less than 150ng/cm 2 and 50ng/cm 2 respectively for both 304 and 316 stainless steels. XPS analysis reveals the marked Cr enrichment on the 316 stainless steel after one year field exposure. SEM shows the morphology of corrosion pits on the steel surfaces. 展开更多

One of the main problems of stainless steel is its poor pitting corrosion resistance in the aggressive environment containing Cl-, such as seawater. In this paper we investigated the corrosion behavior of the 316 stainless steel coated by cerium oxide nanocoating prepared by sol-gel process. Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to study the corrosion behavior of cerium oxide nanocoatings in 3.5% NaCl solution. The microstructure of the cerium oxide was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the formed phases was identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The pitting corrosion resistance of the cerium oxide nanocoating was found to be improved after heat treatment of the cerium oxide nanocoating at 300℃ for 30 min. 展开更多

The open circuit potential (OCP) was measured during MIC test. It was found that OCP shifted to a higher level when the system was inoculated with bacteria while the OCP of those samples in water without bacteria was kept at a low level. The OCP decreased dramatically when MIC started in polluted water. Combination of weld defect heat tint, polluted water and adding bacteria causes MIC happen at high rate. Some elements inside the tubercle were analyzed with EDXA. The pits and biofilm were observed with SEM. Microbiological analysis revealed the difference of bacteria between corroded and uncorroded samples. 展开更多

Pitting corrosion of 316L stainless steel (316L S S) under various stress was studied by potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Mott-Schottky (M-S) analysis in 3.5% NaC1 solution. The results of polarization curves show that, with the increase of the stress, the pitting potentials and the passive current density markedly decrease firstly (180 MPa), and then increase greatly (200 MPa). The corresponding surface morphologies of the samples after the polarization test well correspond to the results. Mott-Schottky analysis proved the least C1- adsorbed to the surface of passive film with more positive flat potential, indicating that a moderate stress could increase the pitting corrosion resistance of 316L SS in 3.5% NaC1 solution. 展开更多

Ni–Cr enrichment on stainless steel SS316 L resulting from chemical activation enabled the deposition of carbon by spraying a stable suspension of carbon nanoparticles; trace Ag was deposited in situ to prepare a thin continuous Ag-doped carbon film on a porous carbon-coated SS316 L substrate. The corrosion resistance of this film in 0.5 mol·L^(-1) H_2SO_4 solution containing 5 ppm F- at 80°C was investigated using polarization tests. The results showed that the surface treatment of the SS316 L strongly affected the adhesion of the carbon coating to the stainless steel. Compared to the bare SS316 L, the Ag-doped carbon-coated SS316 L bipolar plate was remarkably more stable in both the anode and cathode environments of proton exchange membrane fuel cell(PEMFC) and the interface contact resistance between the specimen and Toray 060 carbon paper was reduced from 333.0 m?·cm^2 to 21.6 m?·cm^2 at a compaction pressure of 1.2 MPa. 展开更多

The kinetic curves of the high-temperature oxidation of austenitic heat resistant stainless steel 1. 4828 at 1 050 ℃ were measured using a weighing method. It is shown that the oxidation curves at 1 050 ℃ followed the parabolic line law, and after 250 h of oxidation, the mass gain was about 80 g/m2. The surface morphology and structure of the oxide layers were studied by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. A complicated oxide layer obtained at 1 050 ℃ was mainly composed, from inner to outer, of (FeSi) 3 04, Cr2 03, Fe2 03, and spinel oxides FeCr204 and NiMn204. 展开更多

The dull-finish ferritic stainless steel (FSS) sheet B445R for architectural roofing has been developed by Baosteel. This steel product exhibits excellent corrosion resistance superior to that of SUS 316L with a lower cost. It can be easily formed into roofing panels by ordinary processes. Moreover,the thermal strain of it is less than SUS 316L because of its lower thermal expansion coefficient, and its reflectivity is lower due to the dull-finish treatment. All of these features make it capable of being used as architectural roofing materials in coastal regions. 展开更多
