Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are extremely powerful explosions that have been traditionally classified into two categories: long bursts (LGRBs) with an observed duration T90 > 2 s, and short bursts (SGRBs) with an observed duration T90 T90 is the time interval during which 90% of the fluence is detected. LGRBs are believed to emanate from the core-collapse of massive stars, while SGRBs are believed to result from the merging of two compact objects, like two neutron stars. Because LGRBs are produced by the violent death of massive stars, we expect that their redshift distribution should trace the star-formation rate (SFR). The purpose of our study is to investigate the extent to which the redshift distribution of LGRBs follows and reflects the SFR. We use a sample of 370 LGRBs taken from the Swift catalog, and we investigate different models for the LGRB redshift distribution. We also carry out Monte Carlo simulations to check the consistency of our results. Our results indicate that the SFR can describe the LGRB redshift distribution well for high redshift bursts, but it needs an evolution term to fit the distribution well at low redshift. 展开更多

Adopting the observational distributions of star formation rates and half-light radii of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) in the rest frame UV, we investigate empirically the predicted stellar mass function for LBGs. It is found that a peak exists at mass around 1.5 × 10^10M⊙ for their stellar mass function and there have been significant amount of LBGs with stellar masses higher than 10^11M⊙ at z ~ 3. There should be two families for LBG population observed by the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) (which is a key instrument in the infrared space telescope Spitzer), one is red and the other is blue, which are consistent with recent works. Moreover, the predicted comoving correlation lengths for LBGs with different stellar masses, i.e., with different 8 μm magnitudes, are also discussed. The red LBGs should be clustered in space more strongly than the blue LBGs. These predictions can and will be tested by the observations of IRAC, and will provide strong constraints on the current hierarchical galaxy formation model. 展开更多

We compare the ionized gas velocity dispersion σgas with the stellar velocity dispersion σ* in star-forming galaxies, composite galaxies, Low Ionization Nuclear Emissionline Regions (LINERs) and Seyfert 2s, compiled from a cross-identification of Sloan Digital Sky Survey Fourth Data Release (SDSS DR4) and Point Source Catalogue Redshift Survey (PSCz). We measure σgas from the FWHMs of emission lines (Hα, [NⅡ]λλ6548, 6583 and [SⅡ]λλ6716, 6731). A significant correlation between the gas and stellar velocity dispersion exists, despite substantial scatter. The mean value of the gas to stellar velocity dispersion ratio is close to unity. This suggests that gas velocity dispersion can substitute for the stellar velocity dispersion as a tracer of the gravitational potential well for all the four types of galaxies, but the involved uncertainties are different from type to type. We also studied -↑σgas, as a function of the redshift and the axial ratio to test the effects of aperture and galaxy inclination, and found that both effects are weak. Finally we checked the trend of -↑σgas/σ* with the infrared luminosity and found no significant correlation. 展开更多

We collect 3249 OH maser sources from the literature published up to April 2007, and compile a new catalog of OH masers. We look for the exciting sources of these masers and their infrared properties from IRAS and MSX data, and make a sta- tistical study. MSX sources associated with stellar 1612 MHz OH masers are located mainly above the blackbody line; this is caused by the dust absorption of stellar en- velopes, especially in the MSX_A band. The mid-IR sources associated with stellar OH masers are concentrated in a small region in an [A]-[D] vs.[A]-[E] diagram with a small fraction of contamination; this gives us a new criterion to search for new stellar OH masers and distinguish stellar masers from unknown types of OH masers. IR sources associated with 1612 MHz stellar OH masers show an expected result: the average flux of sources with F60 〉 F25 increases with increasing wavelength, while those with F60 〈 F25 vary little with wavelength, because the sources with F60 〈 F25 are much hotter than those with F60 〉 F25. 展开更多
