Institutional theory has proved the influence of institutional pressures on organization practices and structures. Meanwhile, with the soaring use of corporate social performance (CSP), more researchers are focusing on exploring the relationship between institution pressures and CSP which is still not completely understood yet. Against this background, the paper aims to fill the gap through generally hypothesizing that different types of institutional pressures individually and collectively affect CSP via the mediating effect of corporate environmental strategy. First, based on the previous and extensive literature review, the theoretical framework and research hypotheses are constructed. Next, canonical correlation analysis about the panel data of 51 Chinese large-scale power generation enterprises from 2004 to 2009 is made to test the relevant hypotheses. Finally, based on the data analysis results, the study draws some conclusions and policy implications for promoting the CSP of Chinese enterprises, including enhancing the steering function of government policies and industry regulations and emphasizing the intermediary role of media. 展开更多

In recent years, the prices of primary energy especially coal continue to increase rapidly. This results in a substantial decline of profits and more operating difficulties in the downstream electric enterprises. The listed companies in both coal supply and power industries have quality assets and are the representatives of these industries. Through the analysis of the financial and operational status of the listed coal supply and power companies since 2007, the reasons for the business development difficulties in the electric power industry were discussed. Recommendations were provided including improving the coal pricing system, increasing the degree of business integration of the coal and electric power industries, and adjusting energy structure. 展开更多

In this paper, we examine the relationship between CEO power, CEO age and the efficiency of policy implementation in listed corporations controlled by each province's State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) in China. We find that CEOs with more power implement policy are more efficiently. We also find that younger powerful CEOs will act more effectively than their older competitors. The reason for the difference is that younger powerful CEOs in state-owned companies are incentivized to implement their policy tasks to gain promotions or political capital. Our results are important to future SOE reform and to understanding the characteristics of SOEs as policy instruments. 展开更多

Through analyses of the three transformations of IBM and the three management innovations of the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) and its consequential achievements, this paper condudes that the key to management is innovation. An enterprise can obtain core competitive advantages for sustainable development only if the innovation it makes is closely integrated with its management. Hereby SGCC has set up a good example for other state-owned enterprises to carry out innovational management. 展开更多

The typical features for an integrated iron & steelmaking industry are high energy consumption and CO2 emission. The traditional BF-BOF process in an integrated Iron and steelmaking enterprise produces a large amount of residual heat and energy, which has great potential for recovery and abatement potential of CO2 emissions. In this paper, for an integrated Iron & steelmaking enterprise of 10 million tons per year in capacity, the residual heat and energy recovery analysis was conducted. It is indicateded that the residual heat and energy can be recovered as electric power by using present advanced process technology.By means of the distributed power generation, the residual heat and energy can be recovered, with a power generation capacity of 419.5 kWh per ton steel product.Accordingly, the abatement potential of CO2 emissions for an integrated iron & steel making enterprise was also evaluated, which indicated that about 398.5 kg CO2 could be reduced per ton steel product. 展开更多
