Stationary shoulder friction stir lap welding (SSFSLW) was successfully used to weld 6005A-T6 aluminum alloy in this paper. Effect of pin rotating speed on cross section morphologies and lap shear strength of the SSFSLW joints were mainly discussed. Results show that joints without flash and shoulder marks can be obtained by the stationary shoulder. Cross section of the SSFSLW joint presents a basin-like morphology and little material loss. By increasing the rotating speed from 1 000 rpm to 1 600 rpm, both effective sheet thickness and lap width increase, while lap shear failure load firstly decreases and then increases. The maximum failure load of 14. 05 kN /s attained when 1 000 rpm is used. All SSFSLW joints present shear fracture mode. 展开更多

Stationary shoulder friction stir welding of Ti-6Al-4V of 7 mm thickness was conducted with varying welding speeds and rotation speeds. Variant selection analysis was carried out based on the inherited α phase texture and the reconstructed 13 phase texture. The weld surfaces became significantly smoother with increasing welding speed and decreasing rotation speed. Heat input decreased greatly with increased welding speed and it decreased slightly with decreased rotation speed. The orientation relationship between the prior 13 grains was measured based on the reconstructed electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) data. Weak Variant selection has occurred in all the welds because most of the prior 13 grains did not share { 110} poles. Strong links between crystal orientation of the prior 13 grains and hardness have been found. 展开更多

Radial additive friction stir repairing(R-AFSR)assisted by stationary shoulder was put forward in the present study, which can be employed to repair the mechanical hole out of dimension tolerance of AZ31 magnesium alloy sheet. The results show that the stationary shoulder has sealed-barrier,heat-sink and extra-forging effects. The heat-sink effect improves the microstructure uniformity along the stir zone(SZ)thickness and the surface appearance of repaired hole, and the sealedbarrier and extra-forging effects eliminate the super-fine grain band in the SZ.Therefore, these three effects improve the formation quality of repaired region, thereby enhancing the mechanical properties of repaired mechanical hole compared with conventional R-AFSR.The tensile and compressive shear strengths of the repaired hole by stationary shoulder R-AFSR both increase first and then decrease when the rotating speed changes from 1200 to 1800 rpm,and these maximum values, respectively, reach 190±3 MPa and 64.5±2 MPa at 1400 rpm.The addition of stationary shoulder during R-AFSR can obtain a higher-quality repaired hole and broaden the repairing process window. 展开更多

Friction stir welding (FSW) and stationary shoulder friction stir welding (SSFSW) were carried out for the butt joining of dissimilar AA2024-T3 and AA7050-T7651 aluminium alloys with thicknesses of 2 mm. A comparison between the two processes was performed by varying the welding speed while keeping the rotational speed constant, Through the analysis of the force and torque produced during welding and a simple analytical model, it was possible to show that in SSFSW there is more effective coupling with the tool and the heat produced is more efficiently distributed. This process decreases both the welding area and the diffusion at the interface of the two alloys compared with FSW. The minimum microhardness occurred at the advancing side (AS) at the interface between the thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) and the stir zone (SZ) in both processes, although the decrease was more gradual in SSFSW. This interface is also where all specimens failed for both welding technologies. An increase in tensile strength was measured in SSFSW compared with standard FSW. Furthermore, it was possible to establish the mechanical performance of the material in the fracture zone using digital image correlation. 展开更多

Formation of intermetallic compounds (IMCs) during friction stir welding (FSW) of alu- minum/magnesium (AI/Mg) alloys easily results in the pin adhesion and then deteriorates joint formation. The severe pin adhesion transformed the tapered-and-screwed pin into a tapered pin at a low welding speed of 30 mm/min. The pin adhesion problem was solved with the help of ultrasonic. The weldability of Al/Mg alloys was significantly improved due to the good material flow induced by mechanical vibration and the fragments of the IMCs on the surface of a rotating pin caused by acoustic streaming, respectively. A sound joint with ultrasonic contained long Al/Mg interface joining length and complex mixture of AI/Mg alloys in the stir zone, thereby achieving perfect metallurgical bonding and mechanical interlocking. The ultrasonic could broaden process window and then improve tensile properties. The tensile strength of the Al/Mg joint with ultrasonic reached 115 MPa. 展开更多
