The corrosion behavior of corrosion resistant steel(CRS) in a simulated wet–dry acid humid environment was investigated and compared with carbon steel(CS) using corrosion loss, polarization curves, X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), electron probe micro-analysis(EPMA), N2 adsorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). The results show that the corrosion kinetics of both steels were closely related to the composition and compactness of the rust, and the electrochemical properties of rusted steel. Small amounts of Cu, Cr, and Ni in CRS increased the amount of amorphous phases and decreased the content of γ-Fe OOH in the rust, resulting in higher compactness and electrochemical stability of the CRS rust. The elements Cu, Cr, and Ni were uniformly distributed in the CRS rust and formed CuFeO2, Cu2O, CrOOH, NiFe2O4, and Ni2O3, which enhanced the corrosion resistance of CRS in the wet–dry acid humid environment. 展开更多

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and film thickness measurement have been employed to study the atmospheric corrosion of a weathering steel covered with a thin electrolyte layer in a simulated coastal-industrial atmosphere. The results indicate that the corrosion rate is a function of the covered electrolyte thickness and the wet/dry cycle. Within each wet/dry cycle, the increased corrosion rate is related to the increased Cl^- and SO4^2- concentration and an enhancement of oxygen diffusion rate with the evaporation of the electrolyte. In addition, the corrosion rate increases during the initial corrosion stage and then decreases as the wet/dry cycle proceeds. Moreover, one mathematical approach based on the numerical integration method to obtain corrosion mass loss of steel from the measurements of EIS has been developed, and this would be useful for the development of indoor simulated atmospheric corrosion tests. 展开更多

The corrosion behavior of a rusted 550 MPa grade offshore platform steel in Clcontaining environment was investigated. The results revealed that the corrosion process can be divided into initial stage in which corrosion rate increased with accumulation of corrosion products and later stage in which homogeneous and compact rust layer started to protect steel substrate out of corrosion mediums. On the contrary, structural analysis of rust layers by X-ray diffraction showed that α-FeOOH increased from 1.3% to 3.6% and the Fe3O4 increased from 1.0% to 1.5% while γ-FeOOH reduced slightly according to corrosion time increased from 30 cycles to 73 cycles. The results of electron probe microanalysis indicated that Cr concentrated mainly in the inner region of the rust,inner/outer interface especially, whereas Ni and Cu were uniformly distributed all over the rust after 73 corrosion cycles.According to electrochemical measurements,it was found that the corrosion rate of rusted steel reduced from 0.61 mm/a after 45 cycles to 0.34 mm/a after 85 cycles,44.3% reduction approximately, and Rrust values increased with increment of corrosion time. Therefore, formation of compact inner rust layer and enrichment of Cr are important to improve corrosion resistance of offshore platform steel. 展开更多

Weathering steel is widely used in various fields due to its excellent mechanical properties and high corrosion resistance. The effect of chromium content on the S450 EW weathering steel in cyclic immersion test was studied. The results indicated that the corrosion resistance of S450 EW weathering steel is closely related to chromium content. The addition of chromium significantly inhibited the weathering steel corrosion. The corrosion rate of experimental steel after 96 h immersion was 1.101 g·m-2·h-1. The rust of S450 EW weathering steel was mainly constituted of Fe OOH and Fe3O4 phase, and the elevation of chromium content promoted the formation of α-Fe OOH. The fine precipitates of the two phases contributed to the formation of dense dust layer of test steel. Furthermore, the increase of chromium is beneficial for the cure of original defects and cracks of the rust layer via the enrichment of chromium. The corrosion potential and the resistance of corrosion process were thus increased, protecting the experimental steel from further corrosion. A S450 EW steel with corrosion resistance more than 1.5 times of Q450NQR1 steel was prepared. 展开更多

The formation of protective rust layer of atmospheric corrosion resistance was discussed for weathering steel. The rust layers of experimental steels were made by using an accelerating industrial atmospheric corrosion test of dry-wet cyclic immersion. Furthermore XRD were used to measure and analyze the rust layers. The initial corrosion processes below thin water film were observed and the changes of micro-area pH value were measured. The results are as follows: The corrosion processes of P-RE weathering steel are obviously different from those of carbon steel. The surface of P-RE weathering steel rapidly forms a-FeOOH and the micro-area pH value is above 5.4 during the initial corrosion period. While the component of the rust layer for the carbon steel is mainly Fe3O4 and the microarea pH value is below 3.8. 展开更多
