Alice Munro is a well-known contemporary Canadian writer. She departs from the traditional linear development but employs a seemingly random narrative line as a structural device in her story-telling.In the five short stories,"Material","Walk er Brothers Cowboy","The Moons of Jupiter","Miles City,Montana"and"Something I’ve Been Meaning to Tell you",Mun ro manipulates the use of disconnected narrative time to deal with rites of passage.Free from the conventional time schemes, she expresses her vision in multiple themes and leaves the story open for readers. 展开更多

In the past oral Caribbean and African cultures, performances by the“griots”reminded the community of its heroic past.In colonial studies, performance is a way for the colonized people to reconnect with its original soul and language and to become magnificent of creativity like the storyteller Solibo in Chamoiseau’s Solibo Magnifique(Caribbean). In Chamoiseau’s novel, the Black policemen who came to investigate on Solibo’s sudden death during the performance look grotesque. They mimic the French colonizers with their“baton”and their racism at thinking evil of the Black community and they provoke laughter.Mimicry and the irony it conveys, subverts the formerly ironclad authority of the colonial order(Homi K.Bhabha in Location of Culture). The Cameroonian writer Werewere Liking-Gnépo also warns the Africans of the danger of wearing the White Mask of the colonizers(like Fanon in Black Skin,White Masks). She demonstrates in her Song/Novel She will be of Jasper and Coral, that while the African Mask empowers the performer of metaphysical powers, the White Mask of colonialism on the contrary weakens the performer who internalizes his inferiority and becomes complicit of his subjugation.Fortunately,Werewere Liking-Gnépo shows ithat the White Mask of colonialism can be used to mimic the harshness and corruption of the Colonial order and in doing so to bring back regeneration of Africa. 展开更多

It also occupies a very important position in his Vessex novels. Hardy is a keen observer of nature and of people. And he is good at using words, especially the country dialect. Hardy is also good at creating characters. He is just an architect who holds his characters almost stone by stone. Hardy is a great story-teller and a deep thinker. Hardy’s basic characteristic of art revealed in his own words, "The business of the poet and novelist is to show the sorrow underlying the grandest things, and the grandeur underlying the sorriest things." 展开更多

Architecture as spatial-textile storytelling: Metamorphosis of frieze as a narrative medium mediating the Panathenaia festival

Classical temples constructed by an entire class are considered as a democratic artifact that symbolizes social and communal beliefs and embodies religious significance. In contrast with these meanings that existing scholars have addressed, this paper investigates the extent to which architecture, as both shelter and artwork, serve as a medium of spatial-textile storytelling, providing a rich sensory context that represents and mediates culture. This study is drawn from a case study of the Ionic frieze in Parthenon, Athens, considered both a textile and spatial storytelling device. The research method applied in this paper consists of a literature review of references on the ideas on the links between textile- making and architectural ornament by Gottfried Semper, as well as the historical develop- ment of the frieze in both textile weaving and classical architecture. The paper concludes that the significance of the religious Panathenaia festival is not merely depicted by the peplos identified on the central east Ionic frieze, but is also expressed in the entire representational scheme of the Ionic frieze, along with the overall spatial configuration of the Parthenon. Architecture, instantiated by the Parthenon, is regarded as spatial-textile storytelling to communicate meanings. 展开更多

To succeed,a scientist must write well.Substantial guidance exists on writing papers that follow the classic Introduction,Methods,Results, and Discussion(IMRaD)structure. Here,we fill a critical gap in this pedagogical canon. We offer guidance on developing a good scientific story. This valuable—yet often poorly achieved—skill can increase the impact of a study and its likelihood of acceptance.A scientific story goes beyond presenting information. It is a cohesive narrative that engages the reader by presenting and solving a problem, with a beginning, middle, and end.To create this narrative structure,we urge writers to consider starting at the end of their study, starting with writing their main conclusions, which provide the basis of the Discussion, and then work backwards:Results→Methods→refine the Discussion→Introduction→Abstract→Title. In this brief and informal editorial,we offer guidance to a wide audience, ranging from upper-level undergraduates(who have just conducted their first research project)to senior scientists(who may benefit from re-thinking their approach to writing). To do so,we provide specific instruction, examples, and a guide to the literature on how to“write backwards”,linking scientific storytelling to the IMRaD structure. 展开更多
