A theoretical calculation method of the axial compressive strength of a high strength concrete with fibre reinforced plastics (FRP) constraint is proposed. It is shown by test verification that the FRP strength devotion factor used for this method is in accordance with actual conditions. FRP is not up to the ultimate strength when the concrete reaches the ultimate strength, whose strength devotion factor is in the range of 0.28 to 0.59, which is related to an elastic modulus. The method can be used to estimate axial compressive strength of the concrete strengthened with FRP. The theoretical strength is 10% to 30% higher than the measured one. The deviation comes mainly from a non-ideal bonding condition of FRP-concrete interfaces and discrete property of the testing data of compressive strength. 展开更多

The performance of industrial waste incineration bottom ash in controlled low-strength material (CLSM) was investigated in this paper, as the quarry dust was added. CLSM mixtures were made from the industrial waste incineration bottom ash, quarry dust, and cement. Tests for fresh density, bleeding, compressive strength, shear strength, hydraulic conductivity, and excavatability were carried out. The com- pressive strength ranges from 60 kPa to 6790 kPa, the friction angle varies from 5°to 19°, and the cohesion is from 4 to 604 kPa. Most of the mixtures are found to be non-excavatable. It is indicated that the quarry dust addition increases the compressive strength and shear parame- ters, decreases bleeding, and increases the removability modulus. 展开更多

The single crystal blade is one of the key technologies for improving the performance, durability and reliability of aero-engines and ground gas-turbine engines. However, the anisotropic mechanical properties of the single crystal material makes a great deal of difficulties on the development and the application of the single crystal blade, which is a challenge for the engineering application of the single crystal superalloy and the theoretic bases of the application. Some researches on the strength analysis and the life prediction of the anisotropic single crystal blade were carried out by the authors' research team. They are as follows. The crystallographic constitutive models for the plastic and the creep behaviors and the method of the rupture life prediction were established and verified. The tensile or the creep experiments for DD3 single crystal alloy with different orientations under different temperatures and different tensile rates or under different temperatures and different stress levels were carried out. The experimental data and the anisotropic properties at intermediate and high temperatures revealed by the experiments are significant for the application of the single crystal alloy. In addition, the experimental research for a kind of single crystal blade was also made. As the application of the researches the strength analysis and the life prediction were carried out for the single crystal blade of a certain aero-engine. In this part, the constitutive models and their applications are described, and the experimental research work will be described in part II. 展开更多

The fatigue strength of a high V alloyed powder metallurgy tool steel with two different inclusion size levels, tempered at different temperatures, was investigated by a series of high cycle fatigue tests. It was shown that brittle inclusions with large sizes above 30μm prompted the occurrence of subsurface crack initiation and the reduction in fatigue strength. The fracture toughness and the stress amplitude both exerted a significant influence on the fish-eye size. A larger fish-eye area would form in the sample with a higher fracture toughness subjected to a lower stress amplitude. The stress intensity factor of the inclusion was found to lie above a typical value of the threshold stress intensity factor of 4 MPa.m^1/2. The fracture toughness of the sample with a hardness above HRC 56 could be estimated by the mean value of the stress intensity factor of the fish-eye. According to fractographic evaluation, the critical inclusion size can be calculated by linear fracture mechanics. 展开更多

Using coal fly ash slurry samples supplemented with different amounts of Al2O3, we fabricated mullite-based porous ceramics via a dipping-polymer-replica approach, which is a popular method suitable for industrial application. The microstructure, phase composition, and compressive strength of the sintered samples were investigated. Mullite was identified in all of the prepared materials by X-ray diffraction analysis. The microstructure and compressive strength were strongly influenced by the content of Al2O3. As the Al/Si mole ratio in the starting materials was increased from 0.84 to 2.40, the amount of amorphous phases in the sintered microstructure decreased and the compressive strength of the sintered samples increased. A further increase in the Al2O3content resulted in a decrease in the compressive strength of the sintered samples. The mullite-based porous ceramic with an Al/Si molar ratio of 2.40 exhibited the highest compressive strength and the greatest shrinkage among the investigated samples prepared using coal fly ash as the main starting material. © 2017, University of Science and Technology Beijing and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg. 展开更多

Geopolymers are three-dimensional aluminosilicates formed in a short time at low temperature by geopolymerization. In this pa-per, alkali-activated foam geopolymers were fabricated from circulating fluidized bed fly ash (CFA), and the effect of SiO2/Na2O mole ratio (0.91-1.68) on their properties was studied. Geopolymerization products were characterized by mechanical testing, scanning electron mi-croscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results show that SiO2/Na2O mole ratio plays an important role in the mechanical and morphological characteristics of geopolymers. Foam samples prepared in 28 d with a SiO2/Na2O mole ratio of 1.42 exhibit the greatest compressive strength of 2.52 MPa. Morphological analysis reveals that these foam geo-polymers appear the relatively optimized pore structure and distribution, which are beneficial to the structure stability. Moreover, a combina-tion of the Si/Al atomic ratio ranging between 1.47 and 1.94 with the Na/Al atomic ratio of about 1 produces the samples with high strength. 展开更多

The elevated temperature performances of 2D70 Al alloy hot extrusion rods after two-stage homogenization and intensive deformation were studied by measuring the elevated temperature enduring strength and the creep ultimate strength. The fracture morphology of some selected samples after testing at different elevated temperatures was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicate that, as the test temperature increases, the elevated temperature enduring strength of 2D70 Al alloy decreases gradually. In a comparison between 150 C and 240 C, the notch enduring strength drops from 375 to 185 MPa and the smooth enduring strength drops from 337 to 130 MPa. Enduring strength is not sensitive to the notch. The notch sensitivity ratio (NSR) coefficient is in the range of 1.119 to 1.423 from 150 C to 240 C. The creep test results show that, as the test temperature increases from 150 C to 240 C, the creep ultimate strength of 2D70 Al alloy rods drops gradually from 312 to 117 MPa. 展开更多

At the same time, an analysis of an independent and fairly comprehensive theoretical system is set up. It gives generalized failure factor by 36 materials and computative theory of the 11 states of complex stresses on a point, and derives the operator equation on generalized allowable strength and a computative method for a total equation can be applied to dynamic and static states. It is illustrated that the method has a good exactness through computation of eight examples of engineering. Therefore, the author suggests applying it to engineering widely. 展开更多

This article studies the phase transformation of the metastable β-Ti-A1-Mo-V-Cr-Zr alloy (Ti-1300) to disclose the morphological reason for its high strength and high fracture toughness. It has been found that its ultrahigh strength (ultimate tensile strength exceeds 1 400 MPa) owes mainly to the spheroidization of the α-phase, while the high fracture toughness (exceeds 81 MPa·m^1/2) to the special lath-shaped α-particles. Compared to the needle-shaped second α-articles, the coarser lath-shaped ones remove the stress concentration at the lath tips and consequently benefit improvement of fracture toughness. The article also describes shape evolution of the α-particles during aging thermodynamically and kinetically, and suggests an optimized aging processing to achieve an ideal balance between high strength and high toughness for this alloy. 展开更多

The effect of solution temperature and cooling rate on microstructure and mechanical properties of laser solid forming (LSF) Ti-6A1-4V alloy is investigated. The samples are solutions treated at 900, 950, and 1000 ℃, followed by water quenching, air cooling, and furnace cooling, respectively. It is found that the cooling rate of solution treatment hasα more important effect on the microstructure in comparison with the solution temperature. The martensite α formed during water quenching results in the higher hardness and tensile strength but lower ductility of samples. With decreasing the cooling rate and increasing the solution temperature, the width of primary α laths increases, and the aspect ratio and volume fraction decrease, which make the hardness and tensile strength decrease and the ductility increase. 展开更多

The effects of different Y2O3 dopant contents on residual stress, structure, and optical properties of ZrO2 thin films are investigated. The results show that residual stress in YSZ thin films varies from tensile to compressive with the increase of Y2O3 molar content. The addition of Y2O3 is beneficial to the crystallization of YSZ thin film and transformation from amorphous to high temperature phase, and the refractive index decreases with the increase of Y2O3 molar content. Moreover, the variations of residual stress and the shifts of refractive index correspond to the evolution of structures induced by the addition of Y2O3. 展开更多

Laser shock peening is a well-known method for extending the fatigue life of metal components by introducing near-surface compressive residual stress. The surface acoustic waves (SAWs) are dispersive when the near-surface properties of materials are changed. So the near-surface properties (such as the thickness of hardened layers, elastic properties, residual stresses, etc.) can be analyzed by the phase velocity dispersion. To study the propagation of SAWs in metal samples after peening, a more reasonable experimental method of broadband excitation and reception is introduced. The ultrasonic signals are excited by laser and received by polyvinylindene fluoride (PVDF) transducer. The SAW signals in aluminum alloy materials with different impact times by laser shock peening are detected. Signal spectrum and phase velocity dispersion curves of SAWs are analyzed.
