The properties of heat-resistant steel 309S at elevated properties were investigated.The results revealed a rapid decrease in the short-time tensile strength at elevated temperatures.At 1 000 ℃,the yield strength and tensile strength are 14% and 7% of their respective values at room temperature,respectively.The creep rupture strength was inferred in terms of the relationship between stress and duration time at high temperatures.After 1 000 h,the creep rupture strength is 37.98 MPa at 800 ℃,12.63 MPa at 900 ℃,and 7.27 MPa at 1 000 ℃.The fractures occurring at these high temperatures were intergranular in nature.Under the experimental condition,the fatigue limit stress is 25 MPa.The number of fatigue cycles and crack growth time decrease with increasing stress.Fracture morphology analysis shows that the fatigue cracks initiate on the surface of the sample and propagate through transgranular expansion. 展开更多

The fatigue behavior of high speed steel (HSS) roll materials for hot rolling was researched under watercooling conditions by laser impacting. The microstructure of HSS sample and the morphologies of fatigue samples were observed by scanning electron microscope. The phase structure was detected by XRD. The morphology of situ oxide scale was observed by optical microscope, and the expansion coefficient was measured by TGA. The experiment results indicate that the cracks come into being at the carbide-matrix interface, but there are no cracks in the matrix after many times of laser impacting treatment, for the situ sample taken from the fractured roll surface, big carbides are more sensitive to the fatigue, and peel off prior to small ones. The relevant fatigue mechanisms are also discussed. 展开更多

In order to analyze the effect of different loading frequencies on the fatigue performance for asphalt mixture,the changing law of asphalt mixture strengths with loading speed was revealed by strength tests under different loading speeds.Fatigue equations of asphalt mixtures based on the nominal stress ratio and real stress ratio were established using fatigue tests under different loading frequencies.It was revealed that the strength of the asphalt mixture is affected by the loading speed greatly.It was also discovered that the fatigue equation based on the nominal stress ratio will change with the change of the fatigue loading speed.There is no uniqueness.But the fatigue equation based on the real stress ratio doesn't change with the loading frequency.It has the uniqueness.The results indicate the fatigue equation based on the real stress ratio can realize the normalization of the asphalt mixture fatigue equation under different loading frequencies.It can greatly benefit the analysis of the fatigue characteristics under different vehicle speeds for asphalt pavement. 展开更多

Influence of geometric and cutting parameters of cemented carbide cutting tool on reliability of cutting tool has become more and more mature, yet influence of its physical and material parameters on reliability is still blank. In view of this, cutting test and fatigue crack growth test of YT05 cemented carbide cutting tool are conducted to measure such data as the original crack size, growth size, times of impact loading, number and time of cutting tool in failure, and stress distribution of cutting tool is also obtained by simulating cutting process of tools. Mathematical models on dynamic reliability and dynamic reliability sensitivity of cutting tool are derived respectively by taking machining time and times of impact loading into account, thus change rules of dynamic reliability sensitivity to physical and material parameters can be obtained. Theoretical and experimental results show that sensitive degree on each parameter of tools increases gradually with the increase of machining time and times of impact loading, especially for parameters such as fracture toughness, shape parameter, and cutting stress. This proposed model solves such problems as how to determine the most sensitive parameter and influence degree of physical parameters and material parameters to reliability, which is sensitivity, and can provide theoretical foundation for improving reliability of cutting tool system. 展开更多

According to the rules of UIC515-3, the service loads of the axles are defined, which include some different loads cases as follows: the static loads; the impact loads resulted from running through the rail joints and unevenness rails; the loads through curves and from braking. Through the calculating and analysis, the stress distribution of the hollow axles is obtained for 200 km/h high speed motor trains used in China. At the same time, the fatigue crack growth of hollow axles is studied, and the initial surface cracks of 2 mm depth caused by hard objects strike or the other causes are discussed. On the basis of the linear elastic fracture mechanics theory, the stress intensity factor of the crack of the geometry transition outside the wheel seat is also studied. Associated with fatigue crack propagation equation and the corresponding crack propagation threshold, the crack propagation characteristics under different shapes are calculated. Then the running distances are educed with different shapes propagating to the critical length, and the estimation of the residual lives about hollow axles which are the reference values of examine and repair limit of the hollow axle is given. 展开更多

In this study, shot peening is applied to the titanium alloy Ti–6Al–4V, and the surface treatment effect on fatigue life of shot-peened specimens under high cycle loading is investigated. The induced residual stress is measured by using the orbital hole-drilling method. Surface profilometer and optical microscopy are employed to characterize the surface roughness and morphology. The deformed microstructure layers of the shot-peened specimens are investigated by using scanning electron microscopy. Experiments reveal that the fatigue life of Ti–6Al–4V is improved by the shot peening process, and the surface pre-peening polishing. The combination of pre-and post-peening polishing treatments further improves fatigue life of Ti–6Al–4V specimens. The present work provides useful guidelines for developing more efficient shot peening strategies. 展开更多

An innovative composite deck system has recently been proposed for improved structural performance.To study the fatigue behavior of a steel-concrete composite bridge deck,we took a newly-constructed rail-cum-road steel truss bridge as a case study.The transverse stress history of the bridge deck near the main truss under the action of a standard fatigue vehicle was calculated using finite element analysis.Due to the fact that fatigue provision remains unavailable in the governing code of highway concrete bridges in China,a preliminary fatigue evaluation was conducted according to the fib Model Code.The results indicate that flexural failure of the bridge deck in the transverse negative bending moment region is the controlling fatigue failure mode.The fatigue life associated with the fatigue fracture of steel reinforcement is 56 years.However,while the top surface of the bridge deck concrete near the truss cracks after just six years,the bridge deck performs with fatigue cracks during most of its design service life.Although fatigue capacity is acceptable under design situations,overloading or understrength may increase its risk of failure.The method presented in this work can be applied to similar bridges for preliminary fatigue assessment. 展开更多

Accurate assessment of the impact of heavy traffic loads on asphalt pavements requires a computational model which is able to calculate the response of the pavement fast and precisely. Currently the most finite element analysis programs based on traditional methods have various limitations. A specific program SAFEM was developed based on a semi-analytical finite element method to overcome the problems. It is a three-dimensional FE program that requires only a two-dimensional mesh by incorporating the semi- analytical method using Fourier series in the third dimension. The computational accuracy and efficiency of the program was verified by analytical verification previously. The experimental verification is carried out in this paper and the results show that the SAFEM is able to predict the mechanical responses of the asphalt pavement. Using the program SAFEM, the impact of heavy traffic loads was analyzed in terms of stress and strain dis- tribution, surface deflection and fatigue life. The results indicate that if the asphalt pave- ment is subjected to the heavy traffic load more, the thicknesses and stiffness of the pavement structural layers should be increased adequately in order to support the surface deflection, The compressive stress in asphalt binder course is relatively large and increases more significantly compared with that in the other asphalt layers when the axle load becomes larger. With comparison of the predicted fatigue life, the increase of the axle load will lead to the destruction of the asphalt pavement extremely easily. 展开更多
