FullChinese at MIT:A Non-Disruptive Integration of Technology for Intermediate Students

We describe here ten years of development of a Chinese learning technology and five years of practical experience in integrating this technology in MIT classrooms for intermediate-high and advanced-low students.Key results are as follows:There is no need to disrupt the classroom experience(both for the teacher and the students);Technology provides a sharp increase in learning efficiency and motivation,as confirmed by students;and This overall improvement in learning is achieved by focusing on the efficiency of personal study time.The most salient type of feedback from students falls into two categories:“I wouldn’t have been able to take a class at that level without FullChinese,”and“The use of technology allowed me to prepare for class two to three times faster.”Results were achieved through a slow iterative process during which our learning technology evolved to solve observed needs in acquiring complex new material.

General Survey of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine Researches on Tumor Metastasis

Metastasis and recurrence of tumors is the chief cause of death for such patients. Therefore, researches on the mechanism of its metastasis, prevention and treatment are the focal points in the field of traditional Chinese medicine （TCM） and Western medicine （WM） at present. WM practitioners＂ study on tumor metastasis involved its occurrence and development including every detail and process, and now it even has developed into the molecular biological field. py is used as the main means, but the efficacy is not n treatment surgical operation and radio- chemotheratoo optimistic. In recent years, TOM, as part of the comprehensive therapy, has been gradually gaining attention of oncologists. Aimed at solving the difficult problems in metastasis of tumor, many TOM practitioners on the basis of syndrome differentiation have raised theories about the cause of tumor metastasis. On the basis of these theories, some TOM recipes against tumor metastasis have been developed to serve as an effective supplement to surgical operation, radio- and chemotherapy. The present article summarizes research results in recent years about the cause of formation of tumor and its metastasis by TOM and WM, so as to offer some theoretical clues to the study of tumors metastasis.

Expert panel’s guideline on cervicogenic headache:The Chinese Association for the Study of Pain recommendation

Cervicogenic headache(CEH)has been recognized as a unique category of headache that can be difficult to diagnose and treat.In China,CEH patients are managed by many different specialties,and the treatment plans remain controversial.Therefore,there is a great need for comprehensive evidence-based Chinese experts’recommendations for the management of CEH.The Chinese Association for the Study of Pain asked an expert panel to develop recommendations for a series of questions that are essential for daily clinical management of patients with CEH.A group of multidisciplinary Chinese Association for the Study of Pain experts identified the clinically relevant topics in CEH.A systematic review of the literature was performed,and evidence supporting the benefits and harms for the management of CEH was summarized.Twenty-four recommendations were finally developed through expert consensus voting for evidence quality and recommendation strength.We hope this guideline provides direction for clinicians and patients making treatment decisions for the management of CEH.

Heavy Metal Assessment among Chinese Nonferrous Metal-exposed Workers from the Jinchang Cohort Study

Environmental exposure to heavy metals has been linked to a wide range of human health hazards. We detected the levels of 15 metals in urine samples from 500 representative sub-samples in an ongoing occupational cohort study （Jinchang Cohort） to directly evaluate metal exposure levels. Fifteen metals, namely As, Ba, Be, Cd, Cs, Cr, Co, Cu, Pb, Mn, Ni, Se, TI, U, and Zn, were detected by inductively coupled plasma quadruple mass spectrometry. The results showed that median creatinine adjustment and geometric mean urinary metal levels were higher in the heavy metal-exposed group, except Se and Zn, than other reported general or occupational populations. Further studies should address the effects of heavy metals on human health.

The Ministry of Health of China officially issued a document,adding the first level diagnosis and treatment discipline“Algology”in the list of diagnosis and treatment subjects of medical institutions on July 16,2007.As the most important pain academic organization in China,the Chinese Association for the Study of Pain has made outstanding contributions in promoting the development of pain discipline and in establishing pain standards and disease diagnosis and treatment guidelines.In this special issue,under the leadership of Yan-Qing Liu,Chairman of the 7th Committee of the Chinese Association for the Study of Pain,nine consensus and one guideline were included.

The Li Lineage of Traditional Chinese Medicine

THE BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF CHANGCHUN JINGYUETAN OPEN REMOTE SENSING STUDY AND TEST SITE OF THE CHINESE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

In 1979, the Changchun Jingyuetan Remote Sensing Study and Test Site (RSSTS)began its work, and it was formally established in 1985. The RSSTS is subordinated the Changchun Branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences and is supported by the Changchun Institute of Geography and Changchun Institute of Optics and Fine Machnics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is under the management of the Resource & Environment Bureau of Chinese Academy of Sciences and it is the study base of remote sensing basis and application tests in China. The RSSTS is situated in the Jingyuetan scenic spot of the suburbs of Changchun City, Jilin Province. It is located at 43°40′—43°50′N and 125°18′-125°18′E.

Historical Starting Point, Contemporary Vision and World Insight——New Thinking for the Study of Ancient Chinese Capitals

The topic can be summarized in three interconnected aspects; historical starting point, contemporary vision, and world insight. The historical starting point requires the study of ancient Chinese capitals to abide by rigid academic principles and must be based on historical facts. Contemporary vision refers to the obligation to contribute to contemporary society and civilization through ancient Chinese capital research. World insight expresses our need of an integral and systematic concept to correctly assess the historical status and role of ancient Chinese capitals in the larger context to unveil the unique cultural values and historical significance of ancient capitals across China. Chengdu is an ideal case for us to explore new research approaches from the above three aspects.

A STUDY OF THE RADIOSENSITIVE EFFECTS ON MAMMARY CARCINOMA IN MICE BY CHINESE MEDICINE (SALVIA PLUS ASTRAGALUS) AND ASPIRIN

The effect of treatment with Chinese medicine including Salvia miltiorrhizan and Astragalus, and the nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drug aspirin alone or combining radiotherapy, was investigated in 6-8 week-old TA2 mice being inoculated mammary carcinoma. The date indicated the following conclusions: the tumor growth could be inhibited by aspirin alone (p<0.01) but Chinese medicine group was observed. Mice treated with radiotherapy together with medicine both Chinese medicine and aspirin, had a statistically significant tumor inhibiting (p<0.01) as compared to mice treated with radiotherapy alone. The function to prevent the normal tissues from radiation by these two medicine groups were observed simultaneously. In addition, blood-flow volume of microcirculation, immune function and lymphocyte micronucleus were examined, which were used to analyse potential mechanism of sensitizing enhancement for Chinese medicine and aspirin.

A Study on Advertisements in The Chinese Recorder and Missionary Journal

The Chinese Recorder and Missionary Journal is one of the most valued English literature in China’s history of Christianity and the key publications of missionaries from the second half of the 19th Century to the first half of the 20th Century.The advertisements in it have not been properly stressed by the academic world,most of which are even deleted in the bound volumes.This paper aims to give a preliminary study on the advertisements in Chinese Recorder and Missionary Journal,comparing and analyzing advertisers,slogans and text structures and appeal methods of advertisements of shipping,banking,schools and book introduction in Chinese Recorder and Missionary Journal,thus demonstrating its significance in China’s modern advertising industry and Sino-western commercial trade and cultural exchange.

An In-Depth Study of Complex Power System Dynamic Behavior Characteristics for Chinese UHV Power Grid Security

In this paper,a series of major policy decisions used to improve the power grid reliability,reduce the risk and losses of major power outages,and realize the modernization of 21st century power grid are discussed. These decisions were adopted by American government and would also be helpful for the strategic development of Chinese power grid. It is proposed that China should take precaution,carry out security research on the overall dynamic behaviour characteristics of the UHV grid using the complexity theory,and finally provide safeguard for the Chinese UHV grid. It is also pointed out that,due to the lack of matured approaches to controll a cascading failure,the primary duty of a system operator is to work as a "watchdog" for the grid operation security,eliminate the cumulative effect and reduce the risk and losses of major cascading outages with the help of EMS and WAMS.
