The carrier-free phase-retrieval(CF-PR)receiver can reconstruct the optical field information only from two de-correlated intensity measurements without the involvement of a continuous-wave optical carrier.Here,we propose a digital subcarrier multiplexing(DSM)-enabled CF-PR receiver with hardware-efficient and modulation format-transparent merits.By numerically retrieving the optical field information of 56 GBaud DSM signals with QPSK/16QAM/32QAM modulation after 80-km standard single-mode fiber(SSMF)transmission,we identify that the DSM enabled CF-PR receiver is beneficial in reducing the implementation complexity of the CF-PR process,in comparison with the traditional single-carrier counterpart,because the lower symbol rate of each subcarrier is helpful in reducing the implementation complexity of multiple chromatic dispersion compensations and emulations during the PR iteration.Moreover,the DSM-enabled CF-PR receiver is verified to be robust toward various transmission imperfections,including transmitter-side laser linewidth and its wavelength drift,receiver-side time skew,and amplitude imbalance between two intensity tributaries.Finally,the superiority of the DSM-enabled CF-PR receiver is experimentally verified by recovering the optical field information of 25 GBaud 16QAM signals,after 40-km SSMF transmission for the first time.Thus,the DSM-enabled CF-PR receiver is promising for high-capacity photonic interconnection with direct detection. 展开更多

A general formula about the polarization jitter is concluded in polarization multiplexing (PM) system based on two orthogonal linear polarization states when the best polarization correction is used. A 100 Gb/s PM system based on NRZ code is investigated by simulation, and the Stocks parameter about polarization jitter and Poincare sphere diagrams are got for different power and phase difference of two orthogonal polarized light. The results show that the polarization jitters will be suppressed when the combined PM signal is the linear or circular polarization state. 展开更多

This paper begins with Nyquist wavelengthdivision multiplexing (WDM) and then introduces fasterthanNyquist. In fasterthanNyquist a certain amount of intersymbol interference (ISI) is accepted, which violates the fundamental principle of Nyquist WDM. This results in muchrelaxed transceiver bandwidth and simpler spectral design. However, in fasterthanNyquist, implementation complexity is shifted from the transmitter side to the receiver side. Therefore, successful application of fasterthanNyquist depends on innovation in the receiver structure. In this paper, we discuss the guidelines for implementing suboptimum, lowcomplexity receivers based on fasterthanNyquist. We suggest that duobinary shaping is a good technique for trading off achievable spectral efficiency, detection performance, and implementation complexity and might be preferable to Nyquist WDM. We apply this technique to a DD-OFDM transmission system to significantly reduce PAPR. Polarization-division multiplexing(PDM)with modulation in the nonlinear frequency domain consisting of the discrete and/or continuous spectrum has been recently regarded as a useful method to be utilized in optical fiber communication system.It can compensate the optical fiber nonlinearity based on the nonlinear Fourier transform(NFT).In this paper,we combine PDM with the method of nonlinear frequency division multiplexing(NFDM)and demonstrate the achievable transmission rate by increasing the number of multiplexing nonlinear channels.For the selected subcarriers(i.e.32,64,and 128),the transmission rates are 64 Gbit/s,76.8 Gbit/s,and 109.7 Gbit/s respectively by applying 64-quadrature amplitude modulation(64-QAM)on the nonlinear continuous spectrum.For the transmission distance shorter than 1200 km,the transmission rate of 128-NFDM PDM system can even reach up to 153.6 Gbit/s. 展开更多

We experimentally transmit eight wavelength-division-multiplexing(WDM)channels,16 quadratic-amplitude-modulation(QAM)signals at 32-GBaud,over 1000 km few mode fiber(FMF).In this experiment,we use WDM,mode division multiplexing,and polarization multiplexing for signal transmission.Through the multiple-input-multiple-output(MIMO)equalization algorithms,we achieve the total line transmission rate of 4.096 Tbit/s.The results prove that the bit error rates(BERs)for the16QAM signals after 1000 km FMF transmission are below the soft-decision forward-error-correction(SD-FEC)threshold of2.4×10^(-2),and the net rate reaches 3.413 Tbit/s.Our proposed system provides a reference for the future development of high-capacity communication. 展开更多

Spatial modes have received substantial attention over the last decades and are used in optical communication applications.In fiber-optic communications,the employed linearly polarized modes and phase vortex modes carrying orbital angular momentum can be synthesized by fiber vector eigenmodes.To improve the transmission capacity and miniaturize the communication system,straightforward fiber vector eigenmode multiplexing and generation of fiber-eigenmode-like polarization vortices(vector vortex modes)using photonic integrated devices are of substantial interest.Here,we propose and demonstrate direct fiber vector eigenmode multiplexing transmission seeded by integrated optical vortex emitters.By exploiting vector vortex modes(radially and azimuthally polarized beams)generated from silicon microring resonators etched with angular gratings,we report data-carrying fiber vector eigenmode multiplexing transmission through a 2-km large-core fiber,showing low-level mode crosstalk and favorable link performance.These demonstrations may open up added capacity scaling opportunities by directly accessing multiple vector eigenmodes in the fiber and provide compact solutions to replace bulky diffractive optical elements for generating various optical vector beams. 展开更多

A 40-Gb/s optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) return-to-zero (RZ) transmission experiments including a dynamic polarization mode dispersion (PMD) compensation was reported. The dynamic PMD compensator is made up of two-stage four degrees of freedom (DOF). The first stage adopts polarization controller and fixed time-delayed line. The second stage is variable differential group delay (DGD) element. The PMD monitoring technique is based on degree of polarization (DOP) as error signal. A novel practical adaptive optimization algorithm was introduced in dynamic adaptive PMD compensation. The experimental results show that the performance of the PMD compensator is excellent for 40-Gb/s RZ transmission systems with the large DGD. With this compensator, a significant improvement of system performance can be achieved in the eye pattern of a received signal. The first-order compensating ability of the compensator is greater than 30 ps. The second-order compensating ability is greater than 200 ps2. The first-order optimum compensating time is within 10 ms. The second-order optimum compensating time is within 24 ms. 展开更多

The new technique is implemented by interpolating zero subcarriers and selecting the odd subcarriers to carry data and clipping conventional CO-OFDM signal at zero. With such a scheme,the effect of fiber nonlinearity can be miti-gated,and the wanted signal carried on odd subcarriers is or-thogonal to clipping noise,which falls on even frequencies.
