A Study of English Translation Strategies of Subtitles of the Domestic Animated Film Chang’an from the Perspective of Eco-translatology

This article conducts an analysis and exploration of the English subtitles translation of the domestic animated film Chang’an from the perspective of eco-translatology.Taking three-dimensional transformation as the entry point,it analyzes the adaptation and selection of subtitle translators in the translation process from the dimensions of language,culture,and communication in Chang’an,aiming to enrich the practical analysis of eco-translatology and provide valuable insights and references for the theoretical construction and practical application of eco-translatology.This article enriches the practical analysis of eco-translatology and also validates to a certain extent the applicability of“three-dimensional”transformation.

Analysis of the Subtitle Translation of The Shawshank Redemption from the Perspective of the Skopos Theory

Translation is an important communication skill between different languages.In modern society,audiovisual products are distributed to worldwide areas as a popular means of mass media.As the globalization of economy and culture is advancing in the new century,audiovisual subtitle translation plays an increasingly important part.Good subtitles can enhance the audience’s experience of appreciating foreign films and make cultural communication more effective.This thesis conducts a brief survey on the strategies for film subtitle translation using the case study of the famous film The Shawshank Redemption.In this paper,based on Skopos theory,the author made a comprehensive analysis of subtitling activities and pointed out that subtitling,as a specialized area of translation,is not only guided by translation studies but also under the constraints of film properties.The Skopos theory of film subtitle translation is to provide,within the constraints of time and space,a well-translated subtitle that can contribute to a good understanding of what is happening on the screen.In short,the end justifies the means.Therefore,during the process of subtitle translation,the subtitler should take all the factors into consideration to identify the translation purpose,and then adopt corresponding translation strategies.From this perspective,the author takes the Skopos theory as instruction and applies the reduction and addition method to analyze the film subtitle translation.In the age of globalization,foreign films are increasingly entering people’s lives.Watching foreign films is a popular and effective way to understand foreign cultures.However,in China,subtitle translation has not attracted as much academic attention as it deserves and few theories could be appropriately applied to subtitle translation.Therefore,the author hopes that subtitle translation could be paid more attention in terms of cross-cultural communication.

Subtitle Translation From the Perspective of Eco-Translatology: A Case Study of China Bouquet

China Bouquet shows the uniqueness of Chinese culture from 20 perspectives, serving as an excellent work for disseminating Chinese culture to the world. This paper studies the documentary subtitle translation of China Bouquet from the perspective of eco-translatology. Through analyzing subtitle translation of China Bouquet from linguistic, cultural, and communicative dimensions, the paper aims to propose an effective way to translate and transform subtitles with Chinese characteristics.

Analysis of Domestication and Foreignization in Chinese-English Subtitle Translation——A Case Study of Hi,Mom

In recent years,with the booming development of the film industry,film subtitles play an increasingly important role in modern society.As one of the key links in cross-cultural communication,the quality of film subtitle translation affects the box office and viewing experience.Hi,Mom,a Chinese comedy based on the theme of mother’s love,which topped China’s box office during the Chinese New Year in 2021 and ascended to the third place in the global box office,high-quality subtitle translation is indispensable to its success.This paper discusses the subtitle translation of the film Hi,Mom based on the domestication and foreignization perspectives,so as to provide a reference for the Chinese-English translation of Chinese film.

The English Subtitle Translation of Quanzhou’s World Heritage Application Documentary: A Frame Theory Perspective

Based on Fillmore’s frame theory, this paper examines the translator’s cognitive frame operation in the English subtitle translation of Quanzhou’s World Heritage application documentary. It analyzes and discusses how the translator maximizes translation effect between the source language and the target language, so as to enhance the readability of documentary subtitles and promote the spread of traditional Chinese culture. The findings are as follows: Firstly, in the translation process, the frame operations used by the translator include frame correspondence, intra-frame operations, frame replacement, frame perspective shift and frame transplantation. Secondly, cultural documentaries are full of culture-loaded words, for which the translator usually uses frame transplantation. Thirdly, due to the instantaneous nature of subtitles, intra-frame operations and frame replacement are applied in terms of cultural background of the target language audience. Besides, in order to enhance the audience’s reading experience, there may be some changes of narrative perspective in the English translation of cultural documentaries.

A Research on the Documentary Subtitle Translation from the Perspective of Reception Aesthetics Theory——A Case Study of the Subtitle Translation of The Story of China

Documentary is an important form of audiovisual works with the characteristics of both authenticity and artistry, which plays a significant role in the spread of culture and knowledge. Reception aesthetics is a theory of literary criticism raised by the German literature theoretician and aesthetician Hans Robert Jauss in the 1960 s, in which the focus of literary studies is shifted from the author and text to the reader. It emphasizes reader's participation and acceptance during the text understanding, by shifting the central position of studies from the author and work to the reader. It claims that only the works that have been comprehended and delivered by readers possess artistic value and meaning. With the characteristic of audience-centered, documentary happens to coincide with reception aesthetics theory which takes readers' horizon of expectation into consideration. Applying the theory of reception aesthetics as its interpretive framework, this paper makes an effort to study subtitle translation of documentary films.

With the swift development of China’s soft power and the Belt and Road initiative,the cultural interaction between China and the West become more and more frequent.As an art,the film plays a vital role in spreading Chinese culture,and meantime,the film also is a significant means of cross-cultural communication,while the movie subtitle is a carrier to convey the film content and inner spirit to the foreigners.The study analyses the movie subtitle translation of Changjin Lake from three-dimensional selection adaptive conversion perspectives through comparing its source target to its translation target to leave a deeper understanding of translation skills and inner Chinese culture,which will further promote the“going out”of Chinese culture.

On Subtitle Translation of Game of Thrones from the Perspective of Eco-translatology

HBO TV series–Game of Thrones has gone viral ever since its first release in 2011 and its soaring popularity among Chineseaudience has no doubt benefited from the"appropriate"E-C subtitles attached to it. This paper, through the analysis and discussion ofthe E-C subtitles of Game of Thrones from the perspective of Eco-translatology, demonstrates that the approach of Translation as Adap-tation and Selection(TAS) proves to be operational in subtitle translation, and gives further recommendations in the communicativetransformation of subtitle translation.

Research on Translation about Movie Subtitle from Relevance Theory——Take Forrest Gump for Example

With China's accession to the WTO and the integration of the global economy, the world is getting smaller and smaller. Translation on film and television drama subtitles plays a key role for cultural exchange. However, the quality of film and television translation is uneven, and the exploration of film and television translation is imperative.Subtitle translation is a special type of language conversion. From the theory of relevance, this paper analyzes the film Forrest Gump as a case, and sums up some feasible subtitle translation strategies. This paper aims at using reasonable theory to guide the translation of film subtitles, and improving the quality of translation.This article is composed of five parts, the first part is mainly introducing. The second part is an introduction to the theory of relevance. The third part is the subtitles translation of Forrest Gump. The fourth part is about the translation of film subtitles from the theory of relevance. The fifth part is a summary.

On the Subtitle Translation of Forrest Gump from the Perspective of Skopostheorie

According to Skopostheorie raised by Hans Vermeer,translation purpose is the key factor for translation,and target re⁃ceiver is the most essential factor for translation purposes.Therefore,translators should follow three rules of Skopostheorie,i.e.skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule.Under the guidance of Skopostheorie,this study took the subtitle translation text of Forrest Gump,analyzed the subtitle translation from the view of the director and his intention,and expectations of target audience,and analyzed the subtitle translation and translation strategies from the perspective of three rules of Skopostheorie.This study found that the Skopostheorie applies to the subtitle translation,and it can improve the quality of subtitle translation,better meet the needs of target audience and promote the spread of Forrest Gump in China.

The Study of Subtitle Translation Standard Degree from the Perspective of the Skopos Theory

Nowadays,it is unprecedentedly convenient to watch British and American TV series and films in China because of the contribution of Fansub( short for fan-subtitled) Group-the organization of fans that translates foreign films or foreign television programs and subtitles them into a language other than that of original.To many audiences,watching Fansub Group's works is not only a recreational activity,but also an effective way to learn authentic English.This paper,from the perspective of the Skopos Theory,established reasonable standards of appraising subtitle translation and analyzed over 900-minute subtitle translations according to the set standards.This paper has drawn the conclusion that in spite of some trivial deficiencies,Fansub Groups' translations,with diverse characteristics,are generally qualified to satisfy audiences ' different needs.

Translation Strategies of Culture-specificItems in Subtitles:A Case Study of Red Sorghum

In recent years,withthe continuous improvement of China’s comprehensive national power,more and more excellent domestic films have been exported and welcomed by foreign audiencesbecause of successfulsubtitle translation.The translation of culture-specific items(CSI)in film subtitles is an unavoidable problem for translators,which will directly affect the foreign audience’s understanding of the film if not handled properly.The film Red Sorghum(1987)adapted from Mo Yan’s novel of the same name isrich in cultural-specific items.Accurate conveyingthe meaning of CSIto the target language audience under the constraints of time and space of subtitle translation is a major challenge facing translators in the process of translation.Different scholars have proposed their own classification methods for CSI.Besides,Javier Franco Aixeláfurther put forward 11 translation strategies for translating CSI.According to the subtitle characteristics of subtitles,this report adopts Aixelá’sclassification methods dividing the cultural-specific items in subtitles into proper nouns and common expressions.This paper specifically probes intothe application of Aixelá’stranslation strategies to cultural-special itemtranslation.

In recent years,foreign films have been introduced into China,which have a tremendous impact on people’s social life.As a major tool for obtaining information and enjoying entertainment,film subtitle translation is becoming increasingly important.Meanwhile,the English level and appreciation ability of domestic audience is continuously improving with the change of the times,and their demand and requirement for subtitle translation are also improving.Nowadays,there are still many immature parts in sub⁃title translation,and the theory in China is relatively deficient.Therefore,the subtitle translation level of film needs to be rose.The translator constantly improves the translation ability by using translation theories and skills.Based on the theory of functional equiv⁃alence,this thesis translates the subtitle of the film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing,Missouri.Firstly,this paper briefly introduces the development of the film subtitle translation and the film.Secondly,it introduces the translation theories and skills applied in translation practice,making a particular analysis in combination with specific practical cases.Finally,the translator makes a sum⁃mary for the translation process.The translator hopes that through the translation practice,some attempts can be made for future re⁃search in subtitle translation.
