Effects of Sowing Rate on Marginal Superiority and Yield of Wheat in Wheat-cotton Intercropping System

In the wheat-cotton intercropping system, total 6 sowing rates （187.5, 225.0, 262.5, 300.0, 337.5 and 375.0 kg/hm2） were arranged, and the effects of sowing rate on marginal superiority and yield of wheat were investigated. The re- sults showed that the effect of sowing rate on inner-line wheat was greater than that on side-line wheat; with the increased sowing rate, the marginal superiority of panicle number was reduced in overall, and the difference in panicle number be- tween inner and side lines was decreased from 9.0×10^5/hm2 （sowing rate of 187.5 kg/hm2） to 7.8×10^5/hm2 （sowing rate of 375.0 kg/hm2）; the marginal superiority of grains per spike was increased first and then reduced, and the largest difference in grains per spike between the inner and side lines reached 4.6 under the sowing rate of 300.0 kg/hm2; the marginal superiority of 1 000-grain weight and yield was gradually increased, and the largest difference in 1 000-grain weight between the inner and side lines reached 3.9 g under the sowing rate of 337.5 kg/hm2, and in yield reached 3 136.5 kg/hm2under the sowing rate of 375.0 kg/hm2. The effects of sowing rate on the three yield factors of intercropped wheat ranked as panicle number 〉 grains per spike 〉 1 000-grain weight. The appropriate sowing rate of wheat was 225.0-262.0 kg/hm2 in the wheat-cotton intercropping system.

Analysis on Marginal Superiority and Yield of Different Wheat Varieties in Wheat-cotton Intercropping System

In wheat-cotton intercropping system,the spike number per unit area,grains per spike,thousand-grain weight and yield of side line and inner line were investigated in six wheat varieties to study the marginal superiority and select suitable wheat varieties intercropped with cotton.The results showed that Xingmai No.4had obvious marginal superiority with the yield of 6 919.0 kg/hm2,so it was the suitable variety for wheat-cotton intercropping system.

The Influence of Inbreeding Depression and Hybrid Superiority on Wood Property and Tree Growth of Eucalypt

With F1 of self pollinated Eucalyptus urophylla, F1 of inter tree pollinated E.urophylla, F1of open pollinated E.urophylla and F1 of E.urophylla×grandis as materials,inbreeding depression and hybrid superiority in growth and wood traits are analyzed and discussed.The results are as follows.①There was a regularity for E.urophylla that F1 of self pollinated was subjected to more intense depression than F1 of open pollinated,and growth traits showed more signifcant depression than wood traits.②As to F1 of self pollinated E.urophylla, height,DBH and volume showed significant or extremely significant depression,while water content of green wood,wood density and bark thickness showed no significant depression.③As to F1 of open pollinated E.urophylla, height,DBH and volume showed depression to a certain degree,but not significant;Here again,water content of green wood,wood density and bark thickness showed no significant depression.④F1 of E.urophylla×grandis showed significant hybrid superiority in height,DBH and volume,but the hybrid superiority percentage of different cross pairs varied greatly;It showed no hybrid superiority in water content of green wood,wood density and fiber length;Its bark thickness and content of 1% NaOH extractives decreased evidently.

Changes in Enzyme Activities Involved in Starch Synthesis and Hormone Concentrations in Superior and Inferior Spikelets and Their Association with Grain Filling of Super Rice

The changes in activities of key enzymes involved in sucrose-to-starch conversion and concentrations of hormones in superior and inferior spikelets of super rice were investigated and their association with grain filling was analyzed.Four super rice cultivars,Liangyoupeijiu,IIyou 084,Huaidao 9 and Wujing 15,and two high-yielding and elite check cultivars,Shanyou 63 and Yangfujing 8,were used.The activities of sucrose synthase （SuSase）,adenosine diphosphoglucose pyrophosphorylase （AGPase）,starch synthase （StSase） and starch branching enzyme （SBE）,and the concentrations of zeatin ＋ zeatin riboside （Z ＋ ZR）,indole-3-acetic acid （IAA） and abscisic acid （ABA） in superior and inferior spikelets were determined during the grain filling period and their relationships with grain filling rate were analyzed.Maximum grain filling rate,the time reaching the maximum grain-filling rate,mean grain filling rate and brown rice weight for superior spikelets showed a slight difference between the super and check rice cultivars,but were significantly lower in the super rice than in the check rice for inferior spikelets.Changes of enzyme activities and hormone concentrations in grains exhibited single peak curves during the grain filling period.The peak values and the mean activities of SuSase,AGPase,StSase and SBE were lower in inferior spikelets than in superior ones,as well as the peak values and the mean concentrations of Z ＋ ZR and IAA.However,the peak value and the mean concentration of ABA were significantly higher in inferior spikelets than in superior ones and greater in the super rice than in the check rice.The grain filling rate was positively and significantly correlated with the activities of SuSase,AGPase and StSase and the concentrations of Z ＋ ZR and IAA.The results suggested that the low activities of SuSase,AGPase and StSase and the low concentrations of Z ＋ ZR and IAA might be important physiological reasons for the slow grain filling rate and light grain weight of inferior spikelets in super rice.

Inferior oblique weakening surgery on ocular torsion in congenital superior oblique palsy

AIM: To investigate changes in fundus excyclotorsion after inferior oblique myectomy or myotomy. METHODS: The records of 21 patients undergoing strabismus surgery by a single surgeon between 2009 and 2012 were examined. Only patients who had undergone an inferior oblique myectomy or myotomy,with or without horizontal rectus muscle surgery, were evaluated. Digital fundus photographs were obtained,and the angle formed by a horizontal line passing through the optic disc center and a reference line connecting the foveola and optic disc center was measured. Associated clinical factors examined include age at the time of surgery, presence or absence of a head tilt, degree of preoperative vertical deviation,torsional angle, inferior oblique muscle overaction/superior oblique muscle underaction, and surgery laterality. Whether the procedure was performed alone or in combination with a horizontal rectus muscle surgery was also examined. RESULTS: Mean preoperative torsional angle was12. 0 ± 6. 4 °, which decreased to 6. 9 ± 5. 7 ° after surgery(P 【0.001, paired t-test). Torsional angle also decreased from 15. 1 ± 7. 0 ° to 6. 2 ± 4. 3 ° in the myectomy group(P 【0.001, paired t-test) but there were no significant changes in the myotomy group(P =0.093, Wilcoxon signed rank test). Multivariable linear regression analysis showed that preoperative torsional angle, degree ofinferior oblique overaction, and age at surgery independently and significantly affected postoperative torsional angle.CONCLUSION: Mean torsional angle decreased after inferior oblique myectomy. Degree of preoperative torsional angle, inferior oblique overaction, and age at surgery influence postoperative torsional angle.

Dissection of environmental and physiological effects on the temperature difference between superior and inferior spikelets within a rice panicle

Temperature of a plant organ constitutes an integrative index to its eco-physiological properties and status.However,little attempt has been made to dissect the combined effect of ecological and physiological factors on the surface temperature of a plant organ such as the rice spikelet.In this study,using a deactivated plant as reference,we developed a novel comparison method to dissect the environmental and physiological effects on temperature of rice spikelet.Three japonica rice cultivars with contrasting canopy features were used as testing materials.Temperatures of flag leaf,superior and inferior spikelets and their diurnal rhythm during grain filling stage were precisely measured by a hand-held infrared thermometer.The results showed that the variation of environmental conditions within a panicle was relatively minor,posing a limited influence on temperature difference between the superior and inferior spikelet.On the other hand,it was the intrinsic physiological properties that considerably affected the spatial variations of spikelet temperature within a panicle.Chemical analysis of sucrose and starch in grains and bracts indicated that the superior spikelet is more physiologically active at photosynthetic assimilation and starch biosynthesis.Interestingly,sugar in bracts exhibited a pattern of diurnal changes similar to the source leaf but different from the sink grain,confirming that bracts are source organs for grain filling.Our findings yield penetrating insight into the eco-physiological foundation of spikelet temperature,thus being helpful for the application of physiological approaches in crop breeding for cooler canopy.

Coupling Relationship between Transport Superiority Degree and Urbanization in Sichuan,China

Relationship between transport superiority degree and urbanization is not quantified enough in recent researches.Combined with coupling model and coupling coordination model,the spatial analysis technique was applied to quantitatively analyzing the relationship between transport superiority degree and comprehensive urbanization in eighteen prefecture-level cities in Sichuan from 2000 to 2011. An evaluation index system was constructed,and index weights were obtained using the variation coefficient method. The traffic volume was found to be the main factor contributing to transport superiority degree, and space urbanization was the primary factor influencing comprehensive urbanization. The coupling degree between transport superiority degree and urbanization( CU) was generally higher than the coupling coordination degree( DU) in 2000-2011. DUvaried more significantly than CU. In 2011, Sichuan was divided into five regional types. Based on the above observations, targeted recommendations were developed.

Removal of superior wheat kernels promotes filling of inferior kernels by changing carbohydrate metabolism and sink strength

Poor filling and low weight of inferior kernels limit the further improvement of wheat yield. Two cultivars, Shuangda 1 and Xinong 538, with different grain weights, were selected to investigate the physiological changes of inferior kernels by removal of superior kernels(RS) at the flowering stage. i TRAQ combined with physiological indexes was used to identify factors limiting the filling of inferior kernels.Removal of superior kernels significantly increased the mean filling rate of inferior kernels and thus increased their weight. A set of 6012 proteins in inferior wheat kernels were differentially expressed between the RS and control. These differentially expressed proteins were involved mainly in carbon metabolism and energy metabolism. The main reason for the promoting effect of RS on the filling of inferior kernels may be that RS downregulated proteins involved in glycolysis and pyruvate metabolism while upregulating proteins involved in carbon fixation and photosynthesis. Consequently, RS greatly increased the ATP content in inferior kernels, supplying energy for them to absorb photosynthetic assimilates. Removal of superior kernels increased the activities of sucrose synthase, soluble starch synthase,adenosine diphosphate glucose pyrophosphorylase, and starch branching enzyme in inferior kernels and promoted starch accumulation in them. Thus, RS promoted the filling of inferior kernels and increased their weight. The promoting effect of RS on starch synthesis in inferior kernels was associated with their endogenous IAA and ABA levels.

Effect of unilateral inferior oblique weakening on fundus torsion in bilateral eyes of children with congenital superior oblique palsy

AIM:To study the change of torsion in both eyes after unilateral inferior oblique(IO)weakening on children with congenital superior oblique palsy(SOP).METHODS:This retrospective study enrolled all patients diagnosed with unilateral congenital superior oblique palsy(UCSOP)accompanied by inferior oblique overaction(IOOA).A total of 120 eyes of 60 patients were divided into group 1(more extorted paretic eye)and group 2(more extorted nonparetic eye).The degree of fundus torsion was evaluated before and 1 mo after the IO weakening procedure.The torsion of the fundus was recorded by measuring the diskfoveal angle(DFA)using fundus photography.RESULTS:Group 1 included 26 cases and group 2 included 34 cases,thus the rate of extorsion was insignificantly higher in the nonparetic eye(P=0.10).The preoperative DFA in the paretic and nonparetic eyes was 13.21±5.95,7.97±4.25 in group 1,and 4.65±3.79,13.16±5.35 in group 2(both P<0.001).The postoperative DFA in the paretic and nonparetic eyes was 8.57±4.87,7.32±4.27 in group 1(P=0.24),and 3.85±6.00 and 9.94±5.45 in group 2(P<0.001).The amount of postoperative reduction of the DFA in the paretic and nonparetic eyes was 4.64±3.90,0.65±0.76 in group 1(P=0.002),and 0.80±0.81,3.21±5.50 in group 2(P=0.01).The difference in the amount of reduction of DFA in the more extorted eye in group 1(paretic eye)vs group 2(nonparetic eye)was insignificant(P=0.30).CONCLUSION:Excyclotorsion in the nonparetic eye has a similar probability in the paretic eye in UCSOP children,and weakening of the ipsilateral IO has a more obvious effect on the decrement of extorsion in the more extorted eye regardless of which eye is paretic.

Hormonal changes play important roles in the key period of superior and inferior earshoot differentiation in maize

The upper earshoots with higher superiority usually have higher yield potential and higher efficiency.To determine the key period for the asynchronous differentiation of superior and inferior earshoots and how hormones are involved in this process,a two-year experiment was designed using two maize hybrids:Suyu 41(S41,single-ear hybrid)and AN 101(A101,double-ear hybrid).The results showed that the lag of lower earshoot differentiation was not only caused by the delay of the differentiation starting time but also related to extension of the duration in spikelet differentiation(stageⅡ)and sexual organ formation stage(stageⅣ).From 12 days before silking(DBS),the contents of indole-3-acetic acid(IAA),zeatin riboside(ZR)+zeatin(ZT),and gibberellic acid(GA_(3))in both upper and lower earshoots of the two hybrids increased dramatically and then decreased quickly.ABA slightly increased in the two hybrids and then decreased slowly in S41,while it was maintained at a high level in A101.At 8 DBS,i.e.,the transition period from floret differentiation to sexual organ formation stage,not only the growth of upper-to-lower earshoot difference(ULED),but also the values for ULED of IAA,ZR+ZT and GA_(3)were all significantly higher in S41 than in A101.Furthermore,the upper-to-lower hormone ratios IAA_(U)/AA_(L)and(ZR+ZT)_(U)/(ZR+ZT)_(L)were also much higher in the single-ear hybrid than in the double-ear hybrid,while the GA_(3U)/GA_(3L)and ABA_(U)/ABA_(L)had no significant differences.In addition,the time course of ULED_(hormone)/ULED_(earshoot growth rate)also suggested that the hormones work in different ways in earshoot superiority/inferiority formation.The delayed differentiation of lower ear shoots was conclusively related to the later initiation of differentiation and the longer durations of specific differentiation stages.Compared with the regulating roles of IAA and ZR+ZT in the key period(8 DBS)of superiority/inferiority differentiation,GA_(3) seems to be affected earlier,while ABA contributes little to this process.

Modified inferior oblique anterior transposition for dissociated vertical deviation combined with superior oblique palsy:A case report

BACKGROUND Inferior oblique anterior transposition(IOAT)has emerged as an effective surgery in the management of dissociated vertical deviation(DVD)combined with superior oblique palsy(SOP).Traditional IOAT usually provides satisfactory primary position alignment and simultaneously restricts the superior floating phenomenon.However,it also increases the risk of the anti-elevation syndrome and narrowing of the palpebral fissure in straight-ahead gaze,especially after the unilateral operation.CASE SUMMARY We report the outcomes of the modified unilateral IOAT in two patients with unilateral DVD combined with SOP.The anterior-nasal fibers of the inferior oblique muscle were attached at 9 mm posterior to the corneal limbus along the temporal board of the inferior rectus muscle,the other fibers were attached a further 5 mm temporal to the anterior-nasal fibers.Postoperatively,both hypertropia and floating were improved,and no obvious complications occurred.CONCLUSION In these cases,the modified unilateral IOAT was an effective and safe surgical method for treating DVD with SOP.

Accumulation of High Molecular Weight Glutenin Subunits in Superior and Inferior Grains of Winter Wheat

The difference in accumulation of high molecular weight glutenin subunits （HMW-GS） in superior and inferior grains results in the non-uniformity of grain quality in winter wheat （Triticum aestivum L.）. The HMW-GS accumulation and glutenin macropolymer （GMP） content were studied in superior and inferior grains during the grain filling period, using the sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis （SDS-PAGE）. Compared to inferior grains, HMW-GS was formed earlier and total accumulation amount was higher in superior grains. The total HMW-GS content was higher in superior grain than that in inferior grain except at maturity. For individual HMW-GS types, the accumulation and content of subunit 7 were the highest, followed by subunit 12, while that of subunit 8 were the lowest, followed by subunit 2 in superior grain. In contrary, the accumulation and content of subunit 7 at maturity were significantly higher than subunit 8, but they were similar between subunit 2 and subunit 12 in inferior grain. Moreover, the accumulation of subunit 7 and 12 in superior grain were significantly higher than that in inferior grain. However, compared to the inferior grain, the GMP accumulation was higher, while content was lower in superior grain at maturity.

This paper analyzes the price difference between superior voting （SV） and inferior voting （IV） shares for three dual-class firms： Farmer Mac as a big price discount case, Fox as a price similarity case, and Heico as a big price premium case. We show that the price difference is mainly affected by the control benefit, while voting power and liquidity are also relevant factors. We suggest that the control benefit can be revealed by examining share accumulation and firm performance.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair in a Patient with Superior Mesenteric Artery Occlusion with Transient Intraoperative Infusion of the Inferior Mesenteric Artery: A Surgical Case Report

Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) with mesenteric artery stenosis or obstructive lesions are occasionally recognized. While performing the graft replacement operation in such cases, if the collateral circulation supplying the gastrointestinal tract is well developed, it is necessary that this collateral circulation should be well perfused during aortic cross-clamping. A 72-year-old woman was admitted because of expansion of AAA. Computed tomography (CT) scan examination revealed occlusion at the origin of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) and the development of a collateral circulatory pathway via the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA). During this operation, a vein cannula was placed in the IMA, through which blood was supplied with an extension tube for the protection of the intra-abdominal organs. The IMA was reimplanted after the graft replacement. Previous reports indicate that intestinal ischemia may be successfully prevented by supplying blood to the collateral circulation using various techniques. We report the surgical approach for treatment of AAA using a simple and convenient method to maintain intra-operative blood supply to vital organs.

Drug combination therapy:providing evidence of significant superiority of a combination of drugs compared to the single agents

Based on Jun-Chen-Zuo-Shi,traditional Chinese medicine has used mixtures of naturally occurring herbs for more than 2000 years.Since the last century,advances in omics and cell biology have greatly impacted on the increasing use of drug combination in modern medicine.The enhanced understanding of the biology of a disease as a disturbed system of interconnected molecular pathways which are more susceptible to the simultaneous action of several drugs,provides new opportunities for the rational development of combination therapies.Combination therapies exploit the chances for better efficacy,decreased toxicity,and reduced development of drug resistance and owing to these advantages,have become a standard for the treatment of several diseases and continue to represent a promising approach in indications of unmet medical need.

Clinical Non-inferiority Trial on Treatment of Coronary Heart Disease Angina Pectoris of Xin-blood Stasis Syndrome Type with Lyophilized Salvia Salt of Lithospermic Acid Powder for Injection

Objective： To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of lyophilized Salvia salt of lithospermic acid powder for injection （SSLA） in treating coronary heart diseases angina pectoris （CHD-AP） of Xin-blood stasis syndrome type, and to conduct the non-inferiority trial with Danshen injection （丹参注射液, DSI） as positive control. Methods： An non-inferiority clinical layered, segmented, randomized, and blinded trial on three parallel and multiple centered groups was conducted in 480 patients with stable effort angina grade Ⅰ , Ⅱand Ⅲ, who had two or more times of attack every week. The 240 patients in test group A were treated with SSLA 200 mg added in 250 ml of 5% glucose solution for intravenous dripping every day; the 120 patients in test group B were treated with SSLA but the dosage doubled; and the 120 patients in the control group were treated with DSI 20 ml daily in the same method as SSLA was given. The clinical effectiveness and safety were evaluated after the patients were treated for 14 days. Results： The results showed that the markedly effective rate in test groups A, B and control group was 37.45 %, 36.75 % and 30.09 % respectively, while the total effective rate in them was 88.09%, 89.74% and 67.26% respectively. Statistical significance was shown in comparisons of the therapeutic effect between control group with test group A and test group B, with that in the two test groups superior to that in the control group, and non-inferiority trial showed eligibility （P〈0.01）. Adverse reaction appeared in 8 patients in the test groups and 2 in the control group. Conclusion： SSLA has definite therapeutic effect in treating patients with CHD-AP, with its effect not inferior to that of DSI, and no evident toxic-adverse reaction.

Interactive Effect and Spatial Characteristics of Agricultural Development Level and Transport Superiority Degree in Main Grain-producing Areas of the Central Jilin Province,China

To investigate the spatial synergy between agricultural development level and transport superiority degree in grain-producing areas of the central Jilin Province and the driving mechanism between them,22 counties in the central Jilin Province were used as the research units to calculate agricultural development level and transport superiority degree using the entropy weighting method,weighted travel time and raster cost distance.The spatial econometric model was used to analyze the mechanism of the mutual influence between the two.The main conclusions are as follows.1)Agricultural development level around Changchun,the provincial capital city,and in the areas of Changchun-Jilin and Changchun-Gongzhuling is high,whereas the development level of the counties in the southwest is low.2)Transport superiority degree of each county has improved,the overall connectivity of the road networks has been optimized,and the level of transportation accessibility has shown the development trend of‘centralization’,exhibiting the characteristics of proximity diffusion.3)Locally,there is spatial heterogeneity in the mutual driving effects of the two,with six main patterns.4)The theoretical conditions of von Thunen’s agricultural location have changed under the conditions of market economy due to the improvement of the transport networks,the new model of agricultural development,and the changes of the market system.

The Inferiority Complex after being Accused and Its Enlightenment to Judicature

Higher Grain-Filling Rate in Inferior Spikelets of Tolerant Rice Genotype Offset Grain Yield Loss under Post-Anthesis High Night Temperatures

Increased nighttime respiratory losses decrease the amount of photoassimilates available for plant growth and yield. We hypothesized that the increased respiratory carbon loss under high night temperatures(HNT) could be compensated for by increased photosynthesis during the day following HNT exposure. Two rice genotypes, Vandana(HNT-sensitive) and Nagina 22(HNT-tolerant), were exposed to HNT(4 ℃ above the control) from flowering to physiological maturity. They were assessed for alterations in the carbon balance of the source(flag leaf) and its subsequent impact on grain filling dynamics and the quality of spatially differentiated sinks(superior and inferior spikelets). Both genotypes exhibited significantly higher night respiration rates. However, only Nagina 22 compensated for the high respiration rates with an increased photosynthetic rate, resulting in a steady production of total dry matter under HNT. Nagina 22 also recorded a higher grain-filling rate, particularly at 5 and 10 d after flowering, with 1.5- and 4.0-fold increases in the translocation of ^(14)C sugars to the superior and inferior spikelets, respectively. The ratio of photosynthetic rate to respiratory rate on a leaf area basis was negatively correlated with spikelet sterility, resulting in a higher filled spikelet number and grain weight per plant, particularly for inferior grains in Nagina 22. Grain quality parameters such as head rice recovery, high-density grains, and gelatinization temperature were maintained in Nagina 22. An increase in the rheological properties of rice flour starch in Nagina 22 under HNT indicated the stability of starch and its ability to reorganize during the cooling process of product formation. Thus, our study showed that sink adjustments between superior and inferior spikelets favored the growth of inferior spikelets, which helped to offset the reduction in grain weight under HNT in the tolerant genotype Nagina 22.
