In this work the elastic field of an edge dislocation in a half-space with the effect of surface energy has been obtained. The elastic field is then used to study the image force on the dislocation, the critical thickness for dislocation generation in epitaxial thin films with strain mismatch and the yielding strength of thin films on substrates. The results show that the image forces on the dislocation deviate from the conventional solutions when the distance of the dislocation from the free surface is smaller than several times of the characteristic length. Also due to the effect of surface energy, the critical thickness for dislocation generation is smaller than that predicted by the conventional elastic solutions and the extent of the deviation depends on the magnitude of mismatch strain. In contrast, the effect of surface energy on the yielding strength for many practical thin films can be neglected except for some soft ones where the characteristic length is comparable to the thickness. 展开更多

The objective of the present investigation is to predict the nonlinear buckling and postbuckling characteristics of cylindrical shear deformable nanoshells with and without initial imperfection under hydrostatic pressure load in the presence of surface free energy effects. To this end, Gurtin-Murdoch elasticity theory is implemented into the irst-order shear deformation shell theory to develop a size-dependent shell model which has an excellent capability to take surface free energy effects into account. A linear variation through the shell thickness is assumed for the normal stress component of the bulk to satisfy the equilibrium conditions on the surfaces of nanoshell. On the basis of variational approach and using von Karman-Donnell-type of kinematic nonlinearity, the non-classical governing differential equations are derived. Then a boundary layer theory of shell buckling is employed incorporating the effects of surface free energy in conjunction with nonlinear prebuckling deformations, large delections in the postbuckling domain and initial geometric imperfection. Finally, an eficient solution methodology based on a two-stepped singular perturbation technique is put into use in order to obtain the critical buckling loads and postbuckling equilibrium paths corresponding to various geometric parameters. It is demonstrated that the surface free energy effects cause increases in both the critical buckling pressure and critical end-shortening of a nanoshell made of silicon. 展开更多

In nanoresonators, thermoelastic damping(TED)is a primary energy dissipation mechanism. As a result, when designing nanoresonators,it is critical to limit this type of dissipation. This paper investigates the nonlocal TED of circular single-layered graphene sheet(SLGS)nanoresonators in axisymmetric out-of-plane vibration utilizing the generalized dual-phase-lag thermoelasticity theory. The nonlocal elasticity and Gurtin-Murdoch surface elasticity theories are employed to capture the small-scale and surface energy effects, respectively.By incorporating these effects into the model, the non-classical equations of the coupled thermoelastic problem are first obtained and then an analytical expression is introduced to predict TED in circular nanoplates. Moreover, the results obtained herein are validated by those of the classical continuum theory which can be found in the open literature. The influences of the aspect ratio, surface elastic modulus, surface residual stress and nonlocal parameter on TED of circular SLGS nanoresonators are investigated using numerical data. The calculated results show the significance of surface and nonlocal effects in nanoplate TED continuum modeling. 展开更多

Based on the surface elasticity theory of GurtinMurdoch, thermo-elastic fields within rotating nanoshafts with varying material properties subjected to a thermal field are explicitly examined. Accounting for the surface energy effect, the nonclassical boundary conditions are enforced in the cases of fixed-free and free-free conditions. The effects of variation of material properties, temperature of the environment, angular velocity, and radius of the outer radius on the radial displacement, hoop and radial stresses are investigated. In all performed studies, the role of the surface effect on the thermo-elastic field of the nanostructure is methodically discussed. 展开更多

Liquid marbles were ob- tained by use of fluorinated decyl polyhedral oligomeric silsequioxane (FD-POSS) powder. Marbles containing crude petroleum remained stable on a broad diversity of solid and liquid supports. The effective surface tension of marbles filled with petroleum was established. The mechanism of friction of the marbles is discussed. Actuation of liquid marbles containing crude petroleum with an electric field is presented. 展开更多
